Aside from the false premise, so now two wrongs logically make a right.

No wonder these discussions are so often pointless.

Why not? It's in the spirit of the Democratic and liberal platform.

As a Southerner who is more red then blue, allow me to summarize and paraphrase the Democratic campaign through my eyes.

It usually begins with a self righteous outcry against GREED! Greed is ruining this country. The problem is the greedy rich and Corporate America.

Then that self righteous claim to being above greed is negated by one of the following statements.
  • I don't want to pay taxes. Let the rich pay for them!
  • I don't want to pay for health insurance. Let the rich and responsible carry the burden of my smoking, alcholicism and lack of exercise. Who cares if it bankrupts the country? I'm what's important
  • I don't want to work. Give me welfare!
  • I don't want to earn my education. Give me grants for school!
  • I don't want to have earn my success. Give me jobs because of my skin color!

The South is built on a strong ideology of hard work for a hard day's pay, indepedence, self sufficientcy, and taking care of one's own. An idealogy I am proudly a part of. I don't want anything from anyone except my paycheck minus my fair contribution to our nation's infrastructure.

Is it all that surprising that in light of this that the majority of Southern states vote Red?

Despite how cloudboy wants to perceive the South in the sterotypes fabricated in his own mind, the tale of the uneducated, unmodernized, stuck-in-the-past small Southern time is quickly becoming nil in view of the fabric of cities like Charleston, Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, Houston, Dallas, etc, etc.

Earlier I asked why the South block votes Republican.

Today the NYT had an article about Souther voting.

In pertinent part it said,

Southern counties that voted more heavily Republican this year than in 2004 tended to be poorer, less educated and whiter, a statistical analysis by The New York Times shows. Mr. Obama won in only 44 counties in the Appalachian belt, a stretch of 410 counties that runs from New York to Mississippi. Many of those counties, rural and isolated, have been less exposed to the diversity, educational achievement and economic progress experienced by more prosperous areas.

As for the last election a political scientist said of Southerners refusing to vote for Obama,'

“There’s no other explanation than race,” he said.

actually, there's a lot more explanations orther than race...

for instance, no one likes his policies.

Glad you prefaced that rant with the "through my eyes" part MadRabbit
Perhaps when lauding the new modern South, you might want to acknowledge, just a little bit ,the migration this country has seen in the last 40 years and the contribution that has played in changing the reality's of the south.New industry's have drawn new populace's destroying many of the reality's the old models were predicated on.

Growth and change is never a bad thing and it certainly doesn't happen in a vacuum, but the spirit of the South, that ideology, is still there and one of the best things about the South. I won't deny that there is good things about the left and blue that I agree with and have played a large part of shaping the South via influence.

It just so happens that a lot of the principles that the South adheres to, myself included, are in line with the spirit of the Republican party more than the Democrats.

At least, the old Republican party.

Did someone say Southern politics?

Oh man.  Here it goes.  Thanks to the OP for figuring out my delima that I was not totally crazy down here.   What the article did not mention about the South going republican is the fact that we are the "Bible Belt".  The church runs things.  They run it their way, and do not want to change anything.
For example, The Baptist church I belonged to all my life allowed women to participate in nothing.  Women could not even collect the offerng.   They are a mega/multi monopoly now.  I changed to a small church.
The Bible belt is a strong part of Southern politics.  Most of them are upper middle class.
I voted for President Elect Obama because he was the best one for the job.

Regards. MissSCD

you people are going to kill me.

first off...as an atheist living in tuscaloosa, alabama, the church does not 'run things'. sorry. if you want to feel persecuted, that's fine. but the only thing that really interferes with my life is blue laws...and they have those everywhere (including large cities in the northeast). and how is the baptist church a monopoly? do you even know what a monopoly is? and what is wrong with them not allowing women to collect the offering? are they forcing people to be a part of that church? no? well then what is your complaint?

Right. That's why he just got elected by a relatively large majority.

52% of the population voted for Dear Leader.  It is a majority, but it is hardly "relatively large."

What was the electoral college score again? Oh yeah, that's right, a huge fucking one. The stomping of feet and whining because you lost isn't doing anything for your dignity  .

As for Southern states... I'm happy to see that they're turning towards the Good Side. About time, too.

Even by that methodology, the margin of victory is hardly the "historic" blowout some fervently desired.  It was a healthy margin of victory, that much is undeniable, but by any and all measures of that victory, it is hardly the acclimation Dear Leader and his acolytes sought.

Dear Leader will have to rewrite a few history texts before his victory becomes "huge".

I think it would be appropriate to replace "dear" with "Our". "Our Leader" sounds so much more respectful. Thank you. And... a little genuflexion now and again wouldn't do any harm.

You may think however you wish.  "Dear Leader", with all the sarcasm and cynicism contained therein, is the appropriate level of respect (i.e., not one damn bit of it).

This "dearleader" thing is bullshit. I don't like the guy, but guess what? He won. So for at least the next 4 years he is president. who gives 2 shits what counties were red and blue. As far as newspapers go, the more you read, the better informed you are. A good cross sampling as it were. I find the south an odd place compared to out west. The notion religion runs things here is laughable, go live in south idaho or utah. here its the good ole boys, been in power for years and going to stay that way. and to who ever said poli sci majors all go to law school makes me laugh. I have zero plans of using my poli sci degree for law. Law school students come from all sections of college, english, art, engineering, etc.

Actually most of us were anticipating something in the 335-350 range, not the 365-163 vote thrashing Obama gave McCain.

As far as history, here's some recent numbers for ya:
Obama: 202 electoral vote margin
Bush 2004: 35
Bush 2000: 5 (and lost the popular vote by over 500,000 votes)
Clinton 1996: 220
Clinton 1992: 202

So yeah, we're pretty happy with those numbers.

allow me to be more specific, as you may have missed the context of this post.

the people who didn't vote for him didn't like his policies.

and he did not win by a relatively large majority.
