My problem with the proposed healthcare solutions are what we used to call the "Sick Call Rangers" You know them, the people that go crying to the doc for every bump, ache and imagined symptom. GIving everyone the same healthcare benefits is going to get more and more expensive, as more people start e-diagnosing themselves with various crap just so they can moan about it to all of their friends. Have you never seen your local emergency room? I was just there with a friend and his broken wrist, and it was packed full of idiots who were fine, and just bitching up a storm about the wait time, the doctors, and how they weren't ever going to pay the bill, because it's a public hospital.

Seriously, I am amazed at all the "bitching" here about not wanting others to have health care or what a drain on everyone it's going to be. And how dare any  one moan or complain about an illness. I can't imagine what emergency room you were in but I've never been to an emergency room where people were fine and just bitching up a storm about the wait time and then complaining out loud about how they weren't going to pay for the care because it was a public hospital.
Here we go again................... another 21yr old who knows it all because she's lived so long in the world. I am so  happy your not responsible for some one other than yourself with your callous attitude.

I have a huge problem with the thought that I will be taxed to provide health care for drug dealers and other criminals

OMG!! For someone to make a statement like this....

Here's a newsflash for anyone who doesn't know:

Under the current US health care system, criminals already get free health care. Innocent people suffer and die because they can't afford medical care or prescription drugs while Charles Manson and BTK get free health care and free medication paid for by US taxpayers. Other countries may cover medical costs for criminals, but at least innocent law abiding citizens are covered as well. Makes me wonder how many Americans with potentially life threatening or chronic illnesses have commited crimes and gone to prison just so they could stay alive.

Well, I can't.  And try getting an appointment with a doctor during cold season!  By the time you get to see the doctor, your cold will be long gone.

Maybe I don't live in the real America.

I can go see a specialist in the US within a few days notice.

what I don't understand is how it is ethical to take money from people so that other people can benefit.

First I have to say I'm in agreement that our medical system needs some serious attention. However, I am very wary of socialized medicine, and I'm not convinced that's the way to go.

But the statement above struck me. I'm assuming then, that you don't find the police, fire and ambulance systems ethical, and believe they should also be a fee-for-service program? Schools, too? And all the other programs paid for through taxes, which are not universally used by all?

As for looking at the wrong chart (OP), healthcare is finally going electronic. More and more hospital systems and doctors offices are converting to electronic healthcare records (EHR's) and in time, a doctor need only look up your Medical Record Number (MRN) and voila - there's your chart. It will be much more difficult for a doctor to pick up and review the wrong chart because he/she will have to physically type in your MRN to do so. Of course, this doesn't help you now...

Healthcare is indeed expensive. I'm on COBRA right now, paying $540/month to stay insured, until I qualify for my employer's benefits. I have been denied private insurance at every turn, so my only option is to remain on COBRA or take a chance at not having insurance, which I am unwilling to do. I had surgery last year and my insurance only covered part of it, so the bills continue to flood my mailbox. They go from my mailbox to a "medical bills" box and will remain there until I have a chance to look them over and think about paying them. I'm in no hurry.

I have to say, and perhaps it's because I've been a patient of my doctor for over 10 years, I call and I'm in the next day or two. Going to a specialist is a different story, however.

Hospital staff and Medical professionals all have bills to pay too, things are not getting any cheaper for anybody.  The Government really needs to do some serious subsiding though. It seems mad to be spending billions on military adventures while people are dying in the streets from TB

You do know that it's quite alright to have differing opinions on topics, without resorting to name calling, and the "I'm older than you!!" card.
