ORIGINAL: variation30 what I don't understand is how it is ethical to take money from people so that other people can benefit. First I have to say I'm in agreement that our medical system needs some serious attention. However, I am very wary of socialized medicine, and I'm not convinced that's the way to go. But the statement above struck me. I'm assuming then, that you don't find the police, fire and ambulance systems ethical, and believe they should also be a fee-for-service program? Schools, too? And all the other programs paid for through taxes, which are not universally used by all? As for looking at the wrong chart (OP), healthcare is finally going electronic. More and more hospital systems and doctors offices are converting to electronic healthcare records (EHR's) and in time, a doctor need only look up your Medical Record Number (MRN) and voila - there's your chart. It will be much more difficult for a doctor to pick up and review the wrong chart because he/she will have to physically type in your MRN to do so. Of course, this doesn't help you now... Healthcare is indeed expensive. I'm on COBRA right now, paying $540/month to stay insured, until I qualify for my employer's benefits. I have been denied private insurance at every turn, so my only option is to remain on COBRA or take a chance at not having insurance, which I am unwilling to do. I had surgery last year and my insurance only covered part of it, so the bills continue to flood my mailbox. They go from my mailbox to a "medical bills" box and will remain there until I have a chance to look them over and think about paying them. I'm in no hurry.
