I could use some help, folks.  I’m considering converting to Judaism.  (I don’t yet know what’s involved – I’m meeting with the Rabbi Sunday morning.)

Here’s my concern:  I live in f**King Cleveland, OH.  Folks here that I’ve met have been riddled with bigotry of one stripe or another.  Maybe it’s that way everywhere; I don’t know.  College towns seem more open-minded here in the U.S., but I had always thought of California as the most liberal of all our states and look what they’ve just gone and done with Prop. 8.

I have a girlfriend who is both African-American and Jewish.  (One parent was Black and the other white and Jewish).  When her folks would take her to synagogue she got hated on.  She’s never felt at ease in a Temple, anywhere she has lived.

My best friend from high school and college was an Orthodox Jew.  Her family gave her a huge rash about hanging out with a shiksa.

So, what reception will I really get from the folks at the Synagogue?  Will they accept me?  If they find out I’m kinky, will they freak?  (I know Catholics would, especially here, Christ onna cracker.)

Anyone here Jewish?  If’n you’re not comfy discussing the ins and outs, I understand…there’s a good deal of folks hating on one another going around.  Maybe you could recommend a Message Board for kinky Jews?

Thanks, guys.

Peace out.

If you are looking to convert to Judaism just to find somewhere to fit in, and are fretting because you think you may not, the synagogue may not be the place for you.  I think lots of religions would "freak" if they knew all about your kinks.  Hence, that may not be the proper forum for this, regardless of denomination.  I can't count myself as a "kinky jew" but I am sure there are some out there.  And kinky Catholics, and kinky Methodists, too.  And don't forget the Baptists.

Why on earth would you want to announce this to people at church in the first place?  What I do in my private life is my own damn business.  I'm certainly not going to discuss breath play with the blue-hairs over coffee after services.  I certainly don't want to hear what the nice couple sitting next to me did last night after the kids were in bed. Not the time, not the place.  But, this is just how I roll.

I do wish you well on your spritual journey, and hope that you find what you are looking for.  *edited for spelling, as I am a Spelling/Grammar Nazi, according to the Best Friend)*

Is it any worse than the bigotry and prejudice you have for an entire city?

Ok, let's add Catholicism to your list of prejudices.  As a Catholic, I wouldn't think anything of your being kinky, but I would think much about you being a bigot.

lol... i know plenty of kinky catholics... i don't think religion automatically sets the tone on your sex life or nature.  if you want to be a kinky jew go for it.  i don't think they get down and dirty in the synagogue... but i could be wrong....

There is going to be prejudice possible to find in any area or religion, whether you are kinky or not.

One can not make assumptions about anyone with accuracy. There are some very kinky folks living in the bible belt. There are some very anal retentive folks calling themself "liberal" while meaning "politically correct", who are not open minded at all.

Yes I have some wonderfully kinky Jewish friends, as well as great friends of most other denominations.

I do think that many of the folks I know who were raised in Jewish families have an even better fetish for guilt than the Catholics I was raised with. Not everyone, but many of them. So if that is a kink of yours, enjoy.

I can not say what religion is correct for you, only you can. I find that I can enjoy knowing good honest people of open minds whatever religion they may hold.

Kink doesn't care what religion you are.  Pretty simple.  Nor do they or should they really come into play together (unless you have a thing for nuns/priests, but, whatever).

To lighten the mood a little though, I think "Kinky Jews" would be a kick ass name for a band. ;)

More than likely you will be turned away by the Rabbi, it is common to be turned away three times prior to their allowing you to even begin the process.  Depending on the synagogue, and whether it is orthodox, reform, or conservative, it takes about a year to convert.

Well I could probably answer a lot of your questions as I am both Jewish, kinky and been to Ohio.

Firstly one of the coolest things about the Jewish religion is we treat converts as pure bred Jews.  You would be just as much as a Jew as I am, who was born from 2 Jewish parents.

Secondly being Jewish and kinky go hand and hand.  We're actually known for being a very incestious people.  It's all over the bible as well, look at King David and King Soloman.  History reasons being is Jews are really supposed to only marry other Jews and we keep becoming a small population due to racism.

On the point of racism, it exists in America less than everywhere else.  That being said...  I've been to middle of nowhere Ohio and they can be pretty racist and conservative thinkers.  The love of my life was convinced by her family that I was no good for her because I was a liberal thinker and Jewish.

Personally I live in New York, and I find very little racism.  I believe it is actually more liberal than California, and Cali just tries to keep up an image.  If you want to talk to a kinky Jew or have any more questions feel free to message me.

^^ LOL. Yes, Cali fails miserably in trying to maintain an image. And indeed- the Old Testament is pretty damn kinky.

So, what reception will I really get from the folks at the Synagogue? Will they accept me? If they find out I’m kinky, will they freak? (I know Catholics would, especially here, Christ onna cracker.)

I'm a kinky lapsed Jew... there are many 'lapsed Jews' (and Catholics :P). First of all, why would the synagogue find out? Unless you tell people or wear latex to a Shabbat service, I don't think they'd know. Jews may be pretty damn cool, but we're not psychic. :P
I agree with the 'looking to fit in' worry... Judaism is about a relationship with God, first and foremost. The awesome jokes/good food/worrisome mothers have simply become part of a larger 'culture.' Also, Reform Jews and Orthodox Jews are VEEERRRRY different. I've been to a reform gay synagogue and a super-Ortho synagogue where the services were completely in Hebrew. Judaism isn't an answer to anything but one's personal relationship to God. If you are searching anything other than that, I don't think religion is the right means to your end.

Well, to be honest, I am not sure how a Jew worships.  The Rabbi apparently is not the celebrant of the worship service, as a priest celebrates the Mass.

I know not every congregation of Jews worships in the same way. I don't plan to keep kosher or cover my hair in public.  I am a 'recovering Catholic' myself, so I'm used to having the priests and nuns try to boss me around.  It's nauseating to me to attend Mass and hear 'we oppose the death of the unborn'...etc. as part of the liturgy.

I want a congregation to worship with, but I see no point in joining a religion which is going to give me a rash about how I live.

Thank you guys for your understanding.

It's important to consider the type of conversion.  For instance, relatively few conversions in the US are accepted by the religious authorities in Israel, and it's recently become even more conservative.

Check out the following books:
Conversion to Judaism: A Guidebook by Lawrence J. Epstein (Paperback - April 28, 1994)

Choosing a Jewish Life: A Handbook for People Converting to Judaism and for Their Family and Friends by Anita Diamant (Paperback - Feb 24, 1998)

And a related book on intermarriage:
Embracing the Stranger: Intermarriage and the Future of the American Jewish Community by Ellen Jaffe-Gill and Ellen Jaffe McClain (Hardcover - Nov 1995)

As a non-practicing Jew, but somebody who still relates to it culturally, I think it's pretty important to remember that being Jewish in vanilla life doesn't really help you fit in anywhere.  I don't know anything specific about Cleveland, but if it is anything like Buffalo, there isn't really a big Jewish community outside of academia.  In addition to the people that are bigoted against Jews, it isn't like people who are Jewish are going to like you because you are "one of them."  As for the kink thing, I agree with BKSir, and SweatPea... it really shouldn't come into play unless you invite it too.

I'm entitled to be cheesed off at the Catholic Church.  I could not possibly have been *more* Catholic as a young woman as a result of my upbringing.  Sorry if'n you're devote, it's not my intention to flutter anyone's beliefs or religion.

As for Cleveland, well, I've only lived here a short time. I moved up here from a bo-hunk college town down south.  After having grown up and gone to college in New York.

I don't know if'n you live in the U.S., Rover, but when you move house across states, there's a great deal of culture shock.  Yes, there are cool folks down south, just as there are cool folks who're devote Catholics or who live in Cleveland.  I'm just finding them a bit thin on the ground, is all.

Please accept my apologies if anything I said offended. That was not my intention.

Had a Jewish boyfriend for a year and a half. One of the kinkiest creatures I've ever known, lol!
What type of Judaism are you considering?  If Orthodox, I think you're screwed, in terms of acceptance.  If conservative, maybe.  If reform, you're likely good to go.  There's a couple of other fringe sects that I don't know much about.
Hope this helps.

Catholics have a Cathecism.  A book of rules about what we're supposed to believe and what will happen to us if we don't.

My impression is Jews study all their lives.  Not only the Old Testament, but the language of Hebrew and the Torah.  I'm not sure whether they have Canonical lawyers, as Catholics do.  (Man, those Jesuits are some smart folks.)

I don't really feel 'connected' to a church which has no set of beliefs.  I can't see myself with a bumper sticker on my car saying 'In Case of the Rapture, ths Vehicle Will Be Unoccupied'.  While I do like mysticism, I feel more at ease with something much more structured.

Please email me on the other side, if'n your inclined, SimplyMichael.
