Not quite. When the nation was bored with Diana's crying antics on television and wanted her silenced, the queen stepped up to the mark by shooting Diana in the head in a tunnel in Paris. Apart from that, you're absolutely correct.


The reason I have little enthusiam for republicans is that all the proof is that when the monarchy is banned, they are usually replaced by a worse bunch of leaches. Apart from that, I've never heard a (British) republican propose a constitution that people believe in. Maybe because people see most prominent republicans as being ambitious for their own advancement and consolidating their own positions in the hierarchy of the country rather like the founding fathers, a Bonaparte or Lenin.

Status: offline 		well i like the royal family, they are an institution, the queens speech, sensible william, rascal harry and serious (with a secret ok so not a secret any more but he tried) charles.  I wouldnt want them to step down, i know people who adore the royal family.

The rich get just as many tax breaks and priveleges as the monarchy without having to perform any public duties and that won't change with a Republic. Bringing up the public cost of the monarchy is great but why not bring up the costs on the country by tax avoidance and corruption and moral blackmail by the unaccountable rich?

Status: offline 		Because my patience for trawling the net for info is limited. I was actually looking for info on how much revenue the royal family bring in from tourism for us but i couldn't find anything.
It just amused me the amount of money we spend on these people.

I pretty much enjoy the royal family.  Obviously not all are cool and give out what they get, but then, the whole thing about all the royals being paid for is pretty far fetched.

Misst - I would believe it hard to pin down.  Apart from the revenue the royal buildings bring in, you would have to take into account hotels, merchandise, travel, other stores, public houses and buildings, shows and plays, employment etc  too much to even mention here.
 
We may contribute a certain amount, but they have their own and bring infar more than we give on an individual basis.

misst , it is "possible" that the reason you cant find any info is that facts and figures of that kind "might" be unfavourable to certain "foreign bodies" on these islands.I'm "arguing" that should such figures be available and accurate as well as flattering to "them",there's an unreasonably unfair "fair chance" that such (alleged) figures would have already have been rammed down "ones" proverbial throat.
I do not agree with you that we spend money on these people..............they take it and they take it under threat.

Well our various taxes also pay for medical care, firemen, police service, bin men etc etc etc.
Is that taken under threat to? Or do you feel differently about those kinds of things your tax money pays for?

Other monies are taken which if you do not pay there's a similar consequence
You list several essential services.The key word being essential,like I stated (pythonesque maybe ?) "I didn't vote for him"
Clearly I wouldn't.......I don't have the option however.

Status: offline 		Well like i said the royal family are intolerable to me. However they do bring a lot of revenue in with tourism etc. So on balance i'd say financially they would probably work out as an advantage.
I actually think it is ESSENTIAL that we get all the revenue we can into this country especially in the economic climate right now. If some of that comes from tourists visiting or buying all thing royal, so be it.

Status: offline 		Prince Charles made an agreement with the government to pay tax on his income from the Duchy of Cornwall. He uses his after tax income to fund his public and charitable work. He has been able to increase the income from the Duchy quite considerably over the time he has been Prince of Wales and has therefore increased the amount of income tax he has contributed.

I am not a huge fan of the Royal family in general but I do think that Prince Charles does some amazing work. His Prince's Trust has helped huge amounts of young people.

Hmmm.....

How on earth can anyone calculate the value derived from monarchy related tourism? For a start, how do you know tourism is due to a residing monarchy rather than the history of this country or palatial grandeur? It's simply too subjective to nail down.

Where this is the best 'case', a highly dubious case at that, for the existence of a residing monarchy, then I'd say the monarchists are struggling for a decent argument.
