'Bitch' is a nuanced word.  The meaning behind it, whe written or spoken, can be anything from admiration for a woman's personal power, to a joke between friends, to a referene to a very crabby, even aggressive woman.

While only a female can be a 'bitch' and there really is no such word for men, anyone can be 'bitched out'.

So long as the intent isn't hostile, the word is fine with me.

I use the word "bitch" to describe some men as I think its more of the act of being 'bitchy" than being a female dog that people attach to it. Though thats just my thoughts on it.

JustDarkness -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/14/2008 6:47:22 AM)

I personally don't like the word slut much...used in "public". It sounds judgemental....negative.
Subs/slaves calling themselfs sluts.. in their profiles..make me think they give themself to all who ask. (yes I know...judgemental..that is way I don't use it ;) )
Using the word in the heat of the moment with a girl I own..I don't mind...but I don't use it often. And I ask my girl if she mind such words.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/14/2008 6:53:17 AM)

before i was kinky - slut was a bad word. being raised in a staunch Catholic and Baptist surroundings, i was raised to be chaste.

after kinky - it's still a bad word however depending on who's saying it. if it's Daddy calling me a slut, it's a term of endearment.  if it's someone else, get ready for a tongue lashing.

edited to add: my pet loves being called slut ...it's a form of degradation he enjoys along with other words such as sissy, pathetic human, whore

candystripper -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/14/2008 8:27:28 AM)

There's a book most of you have probably not read, called Fear of Flying by Erica Jong.  It's about a woman who takes joy and pleasure from her sexuality without giving a *crap* about what anyone else thinks.  I will always love that phrase in the book, *the zipless f**k*.

I find the tv show 'Sex and the City' to be the same.  Four women, with differing attitudes about sex, exploring the wide, wide world.  If you haven't seen it, you might like it.

I suppose the word 'slut' could be a woman's way of reclaiming her right to act as she chooses in the sexual realm.  One of these days I'll have to read The Ethical Slut

I have been away from the boards for awhile due to business travel and as I normally attempt to keep up with the mix of new folks coming on to the CM path I causually review the profiles of newcomes. Upon doing so I read a profile of a lady that presented a thome on being a "slut" from many angles.
Since I use the term in my profile, it brought to mind the chance that over the last few years the meaning has morphed into an new understanding.

Whats your thoughts on the interpretation be ye "D" or "s"?

"Slut" is a word that has undergone a considerable amount of social revision and invention over the centuries. While its ultimate origins seem a little unclear, it's generally clear that today "slut" is a moral term, though it changes flavor depending upon which sex is using it and why. I generally understand the term to mean a female who mates with other males far less discriminately than her peers or the established norm for female standards in these matters—of course opening up a discussion of semantics, subjectivity and relativity. The word is often derogatory in use, but modern female-positive sexual politics often seems to fashion it as a woman (usually) who is liberated in her debauchery—sexual or otherwise.

I've heard that the difference between a slut and a bitch is a slut is someone who will have sex with anyone.  A bitch is someone who will have sex with anyone but you.

lmao!  Guess that makes me more of a bitch than a slut....[:D]

In my way distant past slut denoted some horrible memories for me, because that was what I was called. I worked through all that and am now the proud owner of my slutiness and enjoy it. Am a wonderful slut to Sir.

For me and in my homnr, a slus of both a tearm of endearment and a destription of what a girl does in mych the same way as we use the term whore.

SLUT: A girl who will strip off her clothes as far as she is ordered by her Master and will do so when, where and before whom according to my wishes. She will wear her clother more sexually provocably manner then is the custome of other slaves and may if I so desire allow selected gurets to explore or handle her intimately to a level I predetermine (eg handle her breasts). She will also be prepared to service me sexually on demand and if I desire so, in public or before others.

WHORE: is first of all a slut and will be prepared to sexually service both males and females I designate from complete sexual acts to giving head either in private or in public or before an audience. Traditionally, those using the girl for sexual pleasure would have negotiated a price (cash or other) with me in advance and thus the girl would be "a coin girl"..

theobserver -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/14/2008 9:17:06 AM)

I don't like the word, but I use it a lot for work. I don't think I need to overanalyze it or explain why.

I like LA's definition of the word "slut".  This sums me up pretty much, so color me slut, and don't worry about staying within the lines.  [:D]  I do not see this applied to me in a negative sense.  I am safe, I won't fuck anything that moves.  I will go so far as to call myself a pain slut, soda slut, Junior Mints slut.  At the moment, I am celebrating my Beer Sluttiness.  mmmmm

And to those that try to label me a "slut" in a negative sense, bah to you.

wildcat,

quick while your on the beer slutiness, try The "G" aka Guinness

I am not aware the meaning of "slut" has changed since I first bopped one, and that is a long time ago. Are you saying your business travels took several years, in which you had no access to a computer? Maybe time to get a laptop..

antipode,

Might be time to update yourself; back in those days it always carried a negative connotation, now it can describe your special one / not sure of your comment re my travels but i was away abit over aweek. When my associates and I tend to business clients we alwasy travel with company laptops. I choose not to leave any records of my "other"side on a company puter.

For many years before I came into D/s I was identified myself as a slut.  While it has always been considered a derogatory term I didn't see it that way.  The only connotation it ever had to me was of someone who enjoys sex frequently and has multipul partners.  Often people would call me a whore for that.  I was constantly correcting them that I was a slut, otherwise they would have to pay me!

typicalsub,

good on you for knowing up front, thanks for your input.

colouredin -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/14/2008 11:31:14 AM)

FR

I like the Easton and Lizst definition of slut.

I see it in two ways, it depends on why it is used. Many terms are like that they can be either positive or negative depending on the reason that they are used.

I was always called a slut at school, had little bearing on how many people I slept with more to do with my open sexuality, during collage i shrugged the term, and towards the end of my degree i reclaimed it and use it for myself.

We can own words like that, make them what we want them to be which takes he sting out of them.

The meaning hasnt changed, to many the term is an insult, it is simply context.

Welcome back CelticPrince.

I have to concur with LA's idea of a slut.  Erase the negative connotations that have become so deeply rooted in our society and the way it's used in what StrtbkNamedDesire referred to as 'mainstream vernacular'.  (by the way StrtbkNamedDesire– WOW! love the art)   Me, I'm a slut with a cuddleslut streak a mile wide.

thanks for the wb, an interesting profile indeed!

This is a very loaded word to me.  As a young woman, to be called a 'slut' was to be called a 'a piece of worthless trash'.  In the main, women used the word to insult other women.

I've never cared for it myself.  I dont like the implication that a woman who is free with her sexaulity is degraging herself, while a promiscious man is to be admired.

I suppose if it really mattered to my Dom we'd work it out.  I know the word means different things to folks into D/s.  I don't think I'd ever be comfortable being called a 'slut' by anyone other than my Dom, though.

Some words ( like the 'c' word) are vile insults to women.  I also don't care for insulting a man by calling him a 'pussy'.  To have a pussy is not to be 'less than', merely different.

Some folks have very strong feelings about words. I once told one of my gay friends to 'eat me' after he had told me to 'bite him'.  His reaction seemed over-the-top, but after processing it awhile, I could see why a gay man might find that insulting from any woman.

Language is very nuanced.  Racial slurs, etc., are things we've all grown to accept must be used -- if at all -- only in the presence of folks whom we know will not be offended.

Lawyer jokes and blonde jokes roll off my back.  Being called a 'fish' by a goy man isn't quite as easy to shake off.

A word has as much power as one allows it to have. Add me to those who agree with LA's post. I see "slut" as an attitude - one of embracing and enjoying one's sexuality with little to no inhibition. Growing up I always heard it or used it as a negative label, until I realized such negativity was fear-based. If someone wants to call me slut as an insult, I am not insulted, because it's only indicative of the other person's fear or bias, and has nothing to do with me.

That said, it's not a label I would randomly refer to people as, namely because it tends to have personal meaning for people, and who am I to say if they're a slut or not? At the same time, I'm not impressed when dominants randomly refer to submissives as such.

What else can be said but "ditto"
