This year the eggnog appeared early in my house. I blame it on my roommate's friend, because I, being an impulse buyer, usually don't buy eggnog until I am browsing the beverages available at my local gas station and notice they have it. Normally I don't see it until sometime within the week of, or after Thanksgiving.

The thing is, once there is eggnog around, I can't get enough of it. I know for sure that if they stocked the shelves with this stuff year round, one of two things would happen...

I'd either get sick of it, or I'd get really really fat, really really quick.

The thing is, there are a few of those things that we get during the holidays that just don't seem to get made during other times of the year. I've got a few of them listed below, and although most (okay, all) of them CAN be made throughout the year, usually you don't see them.. and finding them made at the store and ready to go just isn't going to happen.

The list below seems to be entirely desert dishes. Feel free to comment if there is something I missed...

I know a lot of things like green bean casserole and stuffing don't tend to be all that common throughout the year.. and let's face it, cooking up a huge old turkey or ham doesn't seem to be a regular occurrence either. The reason I didn't include those things, though, is that while they might not get made often throughout the year, they definitely get made more than the once or twice for Thanksgiving and Christmahannukwanzaaka in a lot of families.

So answer away.. I'm curious to see if I am the only one who is almost relieved that it is hard to find some of the less healthy foods we tend to love so much around the holidays.

I'm glad the Wawa convenience stores sell eggnog in pints year round.  I love the stuff.  I've been known to make candied yams at other times of the year besides the holidays.

Eggnog is a fav for me.  When I lived in Mexico I discovered they had eggnog flavored liquor and my brother and I used to drink it all the time.

My grandma used to make a Christmas dessert that was three layers.  Some kind of mixture of green jello, pineapple, marshmallows and walnuts on the bottom.  The middle layer was a mixture of cream cheese and cool whip and the top was just a beautiful clear layer of cherry jello.   It was really pretty to look at along with being good to eat.  I double miss it, because she's gone now, and I don't know what ever happened to that recipe.

I miss my spice cream filled pumpkin cupcakes, and Turkey. I made stuffing with apples and craisins just a couple of days ago to get stuffed into a pork loin.. now I am really craving that Thanksgiving dinner.

oh and as for desserts I miss my home made cranberry sauce and egg custard pies. *drools*

I already have a bottle of (pasturized) egg nog in my fridge.

Only things on the list that we ever had was fruit cake and cranberry sauce, and I ate neither, so I have to say......

Little biscuits shaped like fish and tiny pretzels
Little sausages wrapped in bacon (which M+S may do all year round, dunno)
Mince pies! Mince pies! I already had one cos my boss bought too many and made me eat one.

And of couse making a chocolate advent calendar for all year! Start the day with a teeny piece of nasty cheap choc EVERY DAY! Whoop.

Another egg nog fanatic here. Xmas isn't right until I have a few (read several) rum and nogs to drink! I tried making my own at other times of the year but it doesn't taste the same as the store bought stuff that's rich and creamy!
Ok, gotta ask this: what's the fuss about candied yams?

I can happily live with egg nog once a year, but I will be very sorry to see the candied fruit for my fruit cake cookies gone for a while.

All those special "only for holidays" cookies , cakes and candies that my friends make - sweets are my weakness !   But if they were available all year round - I'd be a whole lot larger !!!

Egg nog is a yummy concoction of eggs, milk or cream, nutmeg and or cinnamon, rum flavoring and it's all blended together. It tastes heavenly and even better when adding real rum........yummmmmmm.

I'm not sure about the candied yams and hoping someone will enlighten me on them!

IMO, I make the best Christmas eggnog.....

Drop a big spoonful of some really good quality vanilla ice cream in the bottom of your beautiful etched glass holiday mug  (geez, I sound like freakin' Martha Stewart here)

1/2 a shot (or so) of Capt. Morgan's Spiced Rum over that

Fill with eggnog (and not that canned stuff, either!), top with real whipped cream and nutmeg.

Feel merry and lay holly....if they consent

Pumpkin Pie. A Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings is good any night of the year.
