ORIGINAL: jlf1961 However, to get technical, Jesus was most likely born in early to mid spring, since no shepherd in their right mind would be out in the fields at night during this time of the year. The the 25th of December was actually a high feast for the Roman Sun God, whom the Emperor Constantine followed. Christians had the holiday shoved down their throats by Constantine and so, bingo.... As for the Christmas tree, that comes from a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, as does the yule log. A feast was begun on december 21st and ended january 6th, a typical pagan party with drunken debauchery, lewd behavior, naked dancers, naked women falling into bed to be ravished....... Seems to me the pagans had the right idea...... My biggest peeve about Christmas was pretty much addressed by jlf here. I get ticked off by the overly-holy christians who say others are taking away from what Christmas is really about while being clueless to the fact that most of the traditions and symbols associated with Chistmas were taken from other winter celebrations that went on well before most Europeans had ever heard of Jesus. and for those who might be interested: In the early 1980s there was a conference of biblical scholars who spent two weeks just discussing and debate the question of the date of Jesus's birth. When it was all over the general agreement was that according to all the clues in the scripture the most likely date, by the calendar in current use, is March 28th, 0008. The traditions may have been copied from other groups, but they were not taken. The other groups are still free to celebrate anyway they choose. I hear this a lot, especially with the date. People whining and crying because they made Christmas the same day as another holiday. So what, you can't have 2 holidays on the same date? It reminds me of my neighbor who used to cry every year on his birthday. His baby brother had been born on the same day and he couldn't handle the fact that he had to share. Waaa Waaa this was addressed in another thread in more detail round about halloween so im not getting completly into it Fact is Halloween Christmas ... these holidays .. the timing and some of the traditions .. were used by the roman catholic church to help " pagan" converts be more comfortable with the religion being forced down their throats ... they were also used as ways of quelling uprisings from barbaric hordes ... the pentegram .. a symbol of wicca and other " pagan" religions was instead associated with the devil ... leading to some rowdyness by locals in places like salem ... Im stopping here before i say something that will be offensive
