Vendaval -> Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 12:27:36 PM)

It was bound to happen in this economy.  While other products on grocery shelves are loosing sales, Spam and instant mashed potatoes, mac 'n cheese, rice and beans are all selling well.

"Spam Turns Serious and Hormel Turns Out More"

By Andrew MartinPublished: November 14, 2008  AUSTIN, Minn.

"Through war and recession, Americans have turned to the glistening canned product from Hormel as a way to save money while still putting something that resembles meat on the table. Now, in a sign of the times, it is happening again, and Hormel is cranking out as much Spam as its workers can produce.

In a factory that abuts Interstate 90, two shifts of workers have been making Spam seven days a week since July, and they have been told that the relentless work schedule will continue indefinitely.

Spam, a gelatinous 12-ounce rectangle of spiced ham and pork, may be among the world’s most maligned foods, dismissed as inedible by food elites and skewered by comedians who have offered smart-alecky theories on its name (one G-rated example: Something Posing As Meat)."

I think that pretty much says it all [:'(]

I have never considered myself a food elitist, Ven, but the stuff is inedible. I'd rather lick earwax off a Q-tip.

Have the prices gone up on it?  There is a particular canned beef the wife uses in one of our easy, comfort food dishes, that is up to $6 for a 12 oz. can.  The corned beef hash she likes as well as I do Spam has gotten pricey too.

Yeah, I hear you guys.  At least during school years we were never served Spam in the cafeteria.  Even some of my dogs have turned their nose up at it!

does anyone really know what is in Spam? Does anyone really want to know?

Vendaval -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 1:49:34 PM)

I believe it is classified as a "non-food, food product"!

FullfigRIMaam -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 2:05:57 PM)

I have tasted spam, hope to never have to buy it for any reason, but compared to a lot of people around me, I'm doing very well.   I cannot stand to imagine moms and dads being unable to provide the very basics for their uhms in hard times.   I know some people are having difficulty buying food, and that is a sad and unfortunate thing anywhere, but especially here in these United States.   M

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 2:35:22 PM)

spam is good cooked, sorta in the category of cheap hotdogs, or a low grade fast food hamburger. I single sandwich of it tastes well enough, You try three it starts biting back a bit sorta like white castle.

IAMChristine -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 2:40:26 PM)

i can't figure out why it would be selling well, i think it's pricey and not that great tasting, every once in a while i can do a spam burger or something but that's maybe once a year.  you can get chicken, turkey and ham on sale cheaper than spam is by the pound.

spinninsweetness -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 3:14:13 PM)

I always thought spam tasted of aftershave. There are so much better cheaper alternatives..... playdoh, dog food, falsh eyelash glue... I could go on

BbwCanaDomme -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 3:18:02 PM)

When did Spam get labelled a comfort food?! Whoa! I can't think of any food that would make me more uncomfortable than Spam.

When I was a kid and money was tight, we used to eat a lot of cornmeal mush.  I can't stand it to this day.

I grew up eating grits a lot and still eat it almost every day.

Some pooches have more finicky eating habits that your average house cat!  Especially the ones whose owners insist on serving them people food.

I am so happy that I am a vegetarian, and even grow most of my own veggies.

How about it's distant cousin in the Philadelphia/New Jersey area, Scrapple?  lol  It's another one of those don't-wanna-know products.

Personally, I like Underwood Devilled Ham in the little paper-wrapped can.

If by "comfort" foods, they mean some people are starting to feel the econonomic crunch so badly they are resorting to eating some of the least nutritious foods available because they can't afford anything better...well then i suppose that's "comforting".
