So diverse that I find it hard to believe it was all written by one person.

T

No need to believe that, since it isn't true.  Roddenberry penned only a few episodes, and wrote the story for a few others (but not the script).  Over a dozen writers scripted the remaining 70+ episodes, the most prolific of whom were Gene L. Coon and D.C. Fontana.

after 3 pages im just wondering how many of our resident subs are cringing at the nerdyness rearing its head

and how many d-types are watching the subs post thinking * wow her/his brain is hot!!1 wonder how they`d look in vulcan ears*

my brain has the strangest thoughts first thing in the day

on topic....  while comparing babylon 5 and Star trek in terms of stories works fine .... comparing each shows movies doesnt work so well

of the few B5 movies made the worst that comes to mind is "legend of the rangers" ....ok i know it was made for tv wheras most of the trek movies were cinema released... but still theres made for TV bad and then theres...we dont really care bad.... cant recall any of the trek movies quite hitting that low point

I was totally mistaken on the Greek episode, thinking that it was the one with "Parmen" I think the leader's name was, I had forgotten about Who Cries For Apollo. Thanks for the additional memory jog.

As I stated in post #42: The name of the episode is: "Plato's Step Children" (Barbera Babcock was also in it)

I do consider myself a "Trekker" and an old Sci-Fi/Horror Movie buff.  The line about "Then there will be no more Russia" came from a low budget Sci Fi movie "The Brain from Planet Ares" starring John Agar, who has a long list of low budget Sci Fi/Horror films to his credit.

Jeffery Hunter did do the orginal pilot "The Cage" but according to Gene, Jefferys'  wife caused so much trouble on the set that he looked elsewhere for a new captain.  Also that was not Jeffery Hunter in "The Menagerie" at least not in the wheel chair, saddly Jeffery Hunter died on May 27 1969.  Oh and Ms. Roddenberry was also in the "The Cage", she was the First Officer.

Star Trek is also credited for the first "Same Sex" kiss.  Doctor Crusher is kissed by a woman who is the new host for one of those worm thing (can't recall what they were called) Also for human/machine sex...remember Tria and Data....

Did Crusher kiss that Trill at the end of the episode? I can't remember...

That is something I would not have thought of, the human/machine sex and/or relationship issues. It's unfortunate that The Next Generation was too tame to really explore that realm. All they had was that throwaway scene in "The Naked Now" between Data and Yar.

TNG - Can't recall the title but they visited a planet where the entire population was androgenous (sp), in fact it was enforced by law and if any sign of male or female sexuality were discovered a medical and psychological treatment would ensue.

Don't recall how that race reproduced though, if it was even revealed.

I love Star Trek and B5. I got into B5 over the summer, because I was busy when it came out. I am watching it again. I have never seen any of the movies.
The problem that I have with B5 is that Sinclair was replaced with Sheridan and, frankly, he was not good enough. I don't know if it was him or the writing or what. The relationship between G'Kar and Londo made the show.  Start Trek, at least TOS and New Generation, the cast always fit.

Maybe its the way they were set up. You could almost always walk into a show and be ok watching the show, because they were always going someplace. It would be "new" and you could always pick it up at any time. In B5, most everything was happening right there, which made it cheaper to make, but the emphasis was on the relationships. Still, to go in and say I have the complete story right here in 5 seasons and write almost all of it solo made Straczynski the shizzle.  That and organic ships.
I still think it would have rocked and watching either makes me wish it was real.

Cool, thanks!  I must have missed that ST-NG ep.

So why was there all the fuss about Dax and Kira?  (or Kira and somebody, can't remember)  Maybe b/c it was a tongue kiss? Or b/c it was a more *ahem* consensual one?

There is no Captain but Kirk.

There is no First Officer but Spock.

There is no Star Trek but the original.

May you live long and prosper...

galactica thread is up

Please!!!!

Picard or Sisko are far superior to kirk... for starters neither felt the urge to get off with every humonoid looking female they met..... kirk was a serious slut!!

kirk was like the first sibling in a family... got away with murder because the parental units hadnt worked out proper guidelines yet. picard and sisko... and dare i say it janeway  had to work within those guidelines... and they still managed to save the day every week

Ill give you that spock was the superior second officer, though riker gave him a good run, kira was in her own league and tuvok was almost a twin to spock in some ways

and for the statement of TOS being the only startrek  ( i presume you mean worth mentioning ) i refer you to IMDB.com to compare number of seasons for all five shows

The thing about B5 is that it had an overarching storyline, both within the run of the season and over the course of all five seasons. It makes for much stronger storytelling. You can do a lot with a series you know has an end. You can kill off characters and locations with impunity. I saw Stracyznski at a con once during the fourth season, I think, and the man is a genius. He really knows how to work a crowd. He's responsive and insightful, which made him all the better a writer.

Londo and G'kar were the bomb. I'll never forget the episode where they got trapped in the elevator together and G'Kar was excited because he got to watch Londo die, even if it meant he would die too. The were like the Odd Couple.

I agree that Sheridan was not as good a commander as Sinclair (too much head-bobbing when he spoke), but why watch him when you could be looking at Susan Ivanova? Yowza! She was HOT! I got quite a kick out of young Will Robinson as Minbari Ambassador Delenn's attache, Lennier, too. Not to mention the aforementioned Mr. Chekov as Mr. Bester of the Psi-Corps. Stracyzinski once admitted that he got the Psi-Corps from Alfred Bester's The Demolished Man (the first book ever to win a Hugo), so he named one of the Psi-cops after him.

Could have done without the whole bearded ranger character. Marcus, I think. He never quite fit in, and the premise of the rangers was not fully realized in the series, IMHO. Was terribly disappointed in the denouement of the whole Vorlon/Shadow war. I remember thinking "is that it?" I was expecting something a lot more cosmic than "my theory can beat up your theory."

Oh yeah, and the organic ships kicked ASS!

Would you like some Spoo? I hear it's quite fresh today.

Termy,

The movie you are thinking of is called "The Phantom Planet" I have it in my collection. I personally like it because it was art directed by the same guy who later did the early "Lost in Space" TV series. It's actually pretty easy to find, since it's a Public Domain title, and shows up in those "50 movies for $10" type collections.
