sunshinemiss -> Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/17/2008 9:46:34 AM)

Hey folks,
I have been thinking a lot about the holidays.  This is my first year with family in a long time, and I'm wondering what rituals you all do that makes you feel closer to people.

Here are a few I have:

For Thanksgiving, I listen to Alice's Restaurant

I get a mennorah and light the candles because my niece is Jewish and it is one of the ways I honor her religion.

I say prayers outside for solstice.

I go to church to sing the wonderful Xmas carols and listen to Handel's Messiah... usually at a Catholic church cause my mom was Catholic.

And every year I do some kind of random kindness to folks... giving out free hot chocolate is my favorite.  I even did that on Xmas Eve in Korea.  The people were just deeply touched by it.  And then they gave me and my friend sparklers to light around park.  It was lovely.

My aunt buys a Xmas ornament everywhere she goes, and I do that as well now.  In fact, maybe I could get all my P&RS folks to send me an ornament from your neck of the woods?  hmmmm..

Anyway, what do you all do?

well wishes,
tgfka sunshine

My rituals seem to revolve around food & family.  Gotta make the turkey and all the trimmin's for Thanksgiving & Christmas.  I love decorating for Christmas, but I don't allow the tree to come out till the 2nd week of December.  Over the years, my rituals have changed & evolved.

When my daughter was growing up, we made a lot of our decorations.  It started because we were poor & continued because it was a fun time together.  We would get what she called "Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree" from Chubby & Tubby for $1.99 & hope that it would still have needles by Christmas.  On Christmas Eve, Santa would come.  That had been every year since I was 8 that I lived in Seattle.  My Uncle played Santa for children all over the area in a suit my Mother made him more than 50 years ago.

I've been known to carol at nursing homes, although I can't sing a lick.  Neither they nor I care about that.  One year, I cooked 5 turkeys & served them at a homeless shelter with my daughter at my side.  Many years, I buy only for needy children who wouldn't have anything to open otherwise.  I often think of a very sad Christmas a friend had as a child in a poor family & can't stand the thought that other children would have a similar experience.

For me the holidays are all about the giving.  Even when I'm with my family at Christmas, I forget that I have gifts to open too.  I just like to watch everyone else & don't really care if I get anything at all.

The one custom that has carried throughout my whole life is that I will have enjoyable holidays.  I like to say:  "If it doesn't get done this year, maybe I'll do it next year".  I refuse to stress about anything during this time.

If you'd like an ornament from Oregon, I'll be happy to send one to you.  I have so many now that I don't allow myself to buy any more & I do miss that ritual.  [:D]

How does turkey taste? I always wanted to try it.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/17/2008 10:24:55 AM)

Tastes like chicken.  [8D]

wulfgarw -> RE: Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/17/2008 12:55:35 PM)

My rituals are pretty much sleep in late, eat copious amounts of food and maybe watch a movie or two.

IAMChristine -> RE: Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/17/2008 12:57:36 PM)

every halloween i make a big pot of chili and a few pans of corn bread, there's apple cider and games and silly karaoke and lots of good company.

on christmas eve, one of the kids gets to choose dinner, (whatever they want), boy is that a cullinary adventure, but it's so much fun!

rituals/customs/traditions are so important to me...i'm thinking of a few new traditions to share with my family and friends.  these are the things that wonderful memories are made of.

sirsholly -> RE: Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/17/2008 12:57:53 PM)

i order a cake that reads "Happy Birthday Baby Jesus", and we all sing then blow out the candles.

VirginPotty -> RE: Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/17/2008 12:58:59 PM)

On Halloween, we still go trick or treating, divvy up all the candy by type (there is a separate Mom pile for the weird things that only I like).  Then it's candy for breakfast.  Yeah I know, I'm mom of the year.  [:D]

For Thanksgiving, we grab the turkey by the wings and dance with it all across the counter.  The kids can't wait for the turkey dance, and they are with me this year!  And we always go around the table and talk about what we are thankful for this year.

I don't care if my neighbors are getting out their christmas stuff already, I will be decorating inside and out the day after Thanksgiving.  We listen to Elvis while we do it.  And other Classic Christmas tunes.  And I never stuff the stockings with candy, it's always fruit and nuts.  The kids have a great time comparing what they got.  Eeee, I'm stoked!  The holidays are fast approaching!!!

I've talked about this in here before, but what the heck....growing up, every year for Christmas, my mom would get my sister and I each a bag of M&M's for Christmas.  Peanut for me, plain for her.  She did it every year without fail right on through our teens, adulthood, marriages, relocations to other states, we still got the M&M's for about 40 years, until she died.  The first Christmas after that, I felt sad when I saw M&M's in the store and bought a bag for my sister and wondered if she might do the same.....and she did :)   And now it's "our" thing, we do it for each other.  Jus' cuz.

That seriously Braught a tear to my eye!!  Thank you for sharing that!!

This year is going to be hard for me...  I was with "Love" the past 4 Christmas's... and this year, I'm with someone else.. I don't know how I'm going to handle it... But Sweets understands, and swore that He would be patient with me...

Thanksgiving, we usually just came to my mom's house, where my stepdad deep fries a turkey... (If you've never had it.... OMG!!!  I won't eat turkey.. never liked it... till I had it deepfried... I can't get enough... It's injected with pinapple juice and cajun seasoning first... it's soooo moist, and tender, and ::Wipes drool from chin::)  And it's really just another day only I don't have to cook... Well, except for the stuffing balls... I hate his stuffing, so I make my own...  "Love" and I always went shopping Black Friday.. And we always ended up in a fight because I get REALLY nervous around crouds, and lots of traffic, and I would FLIP on him... So Thank God I don't have to do that this year... But I have to listen to Sweets bitching because He works at Walmart that day.... Not looking forward to that, but If I can keep Him calm, and everything on the phone, then it will be a good day!

Christmas holiday plans have REALLY been changing the past couple of years... we don't have the same traditions anymore... It makes me sad, but at the same time, I won't be too upset when Sweets and I get a place of our own, and make our own traditions...

Before, we would have Christmas Eve durring the day at "Love's" family's house... And that evening, was my mom's side of the family.... My mom's side would always "drawl names" from a hat to see who we would buy gifts for because there was always so many of us... But, then, people were getting pissed because one family would always just not show up or something, and the people that they were to get gifts for would be pissed... I got fed up with all the fighting over superficial things, and I decided 2 years ago that we weren't going to do that anymore... Since my mom and I were always the ones to get it all together, no one took notice.. lol

Christmas day, We wake up at my mom's house... gifts all under the tree (that has been up since about a week after Thanksgiving), that say "From SANTA" on them... The UM would get to open all his gifts first, and I always volenteered to go last... I would rather see everyone else open theirs than to get anything myself... And that Evening, we would go to my Dad's family's house for dinner, and all that with them...

This year, Christmas Eve, the UM is going to be with his father, and Sweets is going to be working till 6... We probably aren't going to get together with my mom's side of the family... Everyone is fighting, and I said I would rather just cancel the whole thing as to have to be stuck in the middle... I'm just hoping that I don't want to kill anyone this year... We are to go to my cousin's house for the first time Christmas Day... that's fine, but it's a 2 hour drive... and Sweets is willing to go with, but I don't think that He will really feel comfortable since it will be the first time he meets all of that side of the family.... Wish me luck!!  I hope we get a good tradition started this year... One that we might be able to stick with...

Every Groundhog Day my brother and I get up at 4am, pack food and drive the 275 miles to Punxsutawney, Pa and rob the large homes on the hill overlooking the golf course...

Summerwind what happens if you see your shadows? Do you break into 6 more houses?

Thanksgiving is always at my place. The kids come over and help with the cooking. My son is a Chef and my daughter is a expert with the microwave. Where did I go wrong with her.

Christmas and New Years I spend down in Aruba. 3 weeks on the beach is better than 3 weeks in the ice and snow.

6 months of probation?

Dnomyar -> RE: Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/18/2008 3:42:34 AM)

As long as he stays out of Saw's house he may be ok.

JessieMe -> RE: Holiday Rituals / Customs (11/18/2008 4:53:50 PM)

One of the things I did with my teenagers was give them each slips of paper. On the paper they were to write down what they would give each person if time and money were no issues. They had to do one for each of their siblings and the parents.

It worked out pretty well until I read mine....all my teens gave me unlimited psychiatric visits.   damn smart alecks [8D]
