ORIGINAL: Padriag Just patterns I've noticed over the years. The thing about bots is that they do repeat in patterns... and despite the cynicism a pattern of bad grammar common to several profiles can be an indication of a bot that has spammed a site with multiple profiles. These also tend to be posted in bursts... a bot will find a site it can post profiles too and will post a dozen or more similar profiles in a short period of time. CM doesn't show the time stamp for when the profile was created, if it did it would give us another clue... as bots frequently will post a batch of profiles within seconds or minutes of each other, most of which will be similar and have detectable patterns. The thing about grammar is that people from other countries often don't use english grammar correctly, its not so much poor grammar as it is a pattern of incorrect grammar. They'll use conjuctions or pronouns incorrectly or in odd ways, for example, the OP pointed out someone writing "Am <name>", which may well indicate a non native english speaker. People from different countries will have different patterns, and if you spend much time corresponding with people from other countries, you can get a sense for these patterns. With enough experience you can not only spot them, but sometimes tell which country they are from. None of this is to say everyone from another country is insincere. I have a penpal in Russia whom started out this way, she posted to a site claiming to be from the US... in my second letter to her I asked her what part of Russia she lived in, she was surprised I knew and confessed... after that we became friends and so far as I know she's been pretty honest otherwise and an interesting penpal. Here's some other "tells" I've picked up on in profiles over the years. "... am God fearing" or "seeks God fearing" as part of the listed personal qualities or qualities sought, often indicates a profile of Russian or Ukrainian origin with an Orthodox upbringing. Listed as Native American with a profile picture of a blond, blue eyed individual. Some Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Czech, or Hungarians will use this when trying to pass for being a resident American... thinking the "native" indicated having been born in the US. Weight listed at 50-60 lbs. Europe use the metric system, under which a weight of 55kg would be about 110 US lbs... not all posters remember the conversion and list their weight in kg rather than lbs, which looks very odd to a US reader... even more odd when the profile claims to be a US resident. Again I thank you for the information, you never know when it will be useful. I do like to educate myself. oceanwynds
