How many women here do you suppose are from other countries 50%, 40%, 30%? All I know is that they add more everyday. The most proven way to tell is when they start out by saying "Am (blank)" Nobody starts out introducing themselves with "am!"

Erm... The head title of your topic is about "fakes" and you're asking here how many women are from "other countries"... Are you trying to say that people who are not living in the same country as you are fakes?? O_o

He is probably refering to the number of profiles of women who claim to be from places like Texas, Colorado (where Texas is given as the city and Colorado the state and a zip code not from Colorado), most of these turn out to be from Russia, Romania, Phillipines, etc.  Many of those in turn, are just bots collecting email addresses for spam purposes... if you reply to one of these profiles with an email address in the message, there is a fair chance you'll suddenly start getting spam from russian mail order bride agencies within a few days.  Its a common profile on most personals sites.  Another pattern I've noticed that tends to be a bot / fake profile has either the city or state in all caps.  Names with strings of random numbers also tend to be suspect.

unfortunitly  judging people as "fake  or not" based on how their profile is worded is a tricky situation  at best

people occasionally write in different ways to how they speak

after all how many of us  say "greetings" when saying hello in real life

not quite sure what countries have to do with fakes though

Nah, he's probably referring to the fact that now that he's finally gotten one sub, all those form letters he sends out to possible thirds are getting deleted. All of us who aren't into poly or being low man on the totem pole, yup, we're all fakes.

Am I mistaken, or are you actually measuring someone's reality or fakeness by their grammar?
Seriously, come on over and cruise some male profiles... of grammar correctness makes someone fake, I dont think there are many real people.
Or you could realize that if they are from other countries, originally and moved here, or if they are still in those other countries and English is not their first anguage, that starting an introduction with Am would be perfectly logical since they might assume as it is in their language that the article is implied in the verb.

Just sayin.

I agree with you DV.  I get emails often from both men and women from other countries that it's obvious english is not their first language.  That certainly doesn't make them fake.  I'm sure it's not always easy for them to write a note to someone when they don't speak the language fluently (or write it) and instead of someone being understanding of that, they get labeled as being fake.  Not everyone that is from another country is necessarily a spam bot or a scammer.  There are many that are legit.  I'm sure he wouldn't like it if he was labeled a fake because he contacted someone else from another country, but couldn't speak their language.

Thank you Padriag for this information. It is valuable information to have in the world of computers.

Lighten up man or you'll have a stroke, heart attack, get ulsers or burst a vein in your arse (There are some here who will happily do the latter to your arse given the chance if you ask nicely).... Those of us who have been here for more than a few days, actually do understand these things and have the inte;lligence to avoid the problems and do not need someone still wet behind the ears and green to boot to throw a temper tantrum or spit his lil dummy at everyone..

Just patterns I've noticed over the years.  The thing about bots is that they do repeat in patterns... and despite the cynicism a pattern of bad grammar common to several profiles can be an indication of a bot that has spammed a site with multiple profiles.  These also tend to be posted in bursts... a bot will find a site it can post profiles too and will post a dozen or more similar profiles in a short period of time.  CM doesn't show the time stamp for when the profile was created, if it did it would give us another clue... as bots frequently will post a batch of profiles within seconds or minutes of each other, most of which will be similar and have detectable patterns.  The thing about grammar is that people from other countries often don't use english grammar correctly, its not so much poor grammar as it is a pattern of incorrect grammar.  They'll use conjuctions or pronouns incorrectly or in odd ways, for example, the OP pointed out someone writing "Am <name>", which may well indicate a non native english speaker.  People from different countries will have different patterns, and if you spend much time corresponding with people from other countries, you can get a sense for these patterns.  With enough experience you can not only spot them, but sometimes tell which country they are from.

None of this is to say everyone from another country is insincere.  I have a penpal in Russia whom started out this way, she posted to a site claiming to be from the US... in my second letter to her I asked her what part of Russia she lived in, she was surprised I knew and confessed... after that we became friends and so far as I know she's been pretty honest otherwise and an interesting penpal.

Here's some other "tells" I've picked up on in profiles over the years.
"... am God fearing" or "seeks God fearing" as part of the listed personal qualities or qualities sought, often indicates a profile of Russian or Ukrainian origin with an Orthodox upbringing.
Listed as Native American with a profile picture of a blond, blue eyed individual.  Some Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Czech, or Hungarians will use this when trying to pass for being a resident American... thinking the "native" indicated having been born in the US.
Weight listed at 50-60 lbs.  Europe use the metric system, under which a weight of 55kg would be about 110 US lbs... not all posters remember the conversion and list their weight in kg rather than lbs, which looks very odd to a US reader... even more odd when the profile claims to be a US resident.

Except a thread about "fakes" comes up oh every week, maybe every few days. It's like when you hear a joke 3,000 times, it's not that humorous anymore. And truth be told, the point of your OP was kind of confusing - seemed you had decided that people from other countries are fakes (there are a lot of people from various countries who post on these boards). It's always good to know your audience before making cracks about them...
