it doesn't matter if they claim her as a dependent(or not) or if she lives with them (or not).
what matters to federal student financial aid is the income and assets of the parents/step-parents she last lived with, until she is 25, unless she is a veteran, both of her parents are deceased, or she was a ward of the court before turning 18.

i think its only 23...but that exact thing happened to me...my father wouldnt release his tax info to the loan people and i had to wait an entire year more to get aid at all...kinda pissed me off as you can well imagine, but i got by and all was well after that.

For one Im not talking from a pedestal. Im talking from experience. The op is just starting her life. If she needs a boot in the ass to get her motivated then give it to her. Looks like her parents already did. Sounds to me like she wants everything handed to her. If she wants to be a teacher and be with kids take a nanny job. See if can handle the kids first. I personally know Nannys who make a lot more money than I do. Get rid of the negative attitude and get a positive one.

Yup because when you feel down or heaven forbid depressed its so easy to 'get rid of the negative attitude and et a positive one'. Ok so its not, but it is bloody easy to talk from hindsight and forget how much life sucks when you feel like this, that good advice helps but that being chastised does nothing because you know what when you do feel like this you kick yourself more than enough for anyone. It doesnt sound to me like she wants everything handed to her what it sounds like to me is that shes feeling low about everything in her life, but we clearly read it differantly

Get a part time job abd go to community college part time until you're 26, than finish whatever degree you can use the credits you've already taken.
I have nieces in your situation, and can't say I blame their parents for not wanting to squander any more money while they change majors and learn how to party in college.
Good luck,   M

First of all, you have been sick and suffering and you are going to be more emotional right about now.  Chill, focus on getting well and address it all then.  You cannot feel sorry for yourself or you will stay down.  Just get out there once you are feeling better and find a way to make life what you want it to be.

I signed a statement when my son was trying to get help for his schooling stating that he had been self supporting for over a year and not in my home and that I could not help him and he was on his own.  They did not go into financial records or anything.  They helped him.  You can also check into adult education.  Okay, it isn't the greatest but you can do medical office or back office or dental assisting and make a half decent wage.  If you can't do the medical thing there are other things like accounting or even car machanic.

But right now, you need to focus on the medical stuff.  You may feel much better after you take care of that.  Some senior groups do mentoring for people just like yourself.  Try finding a mentor or someone who can help advise you.  Listen to the people that have posted already even if you don't want to hear it, but you might come back when you feel better to do that.  Right now from what I have seen, is simply not the time.  You may need a kick in the pants... but take it when your pants don't feel like you have a fire in them.

Same thing happened to me, seems like forever at the time, but in the grand scheme of things....I had forgotten it even happened until just now.

i'm 22, with half a college credit, and a yeast infection... in a relationship that i love, but is going nowhere... i only have one friend and that's my boyfriend of just about a year... i live with my brother, and i feel like i'm failing at life.

Your life hasn't really started yet so you can't possibly have failed at it:)  They sell OTC meds for yeast infections now, it might help a lot to just address that so that you feel better physically.  The grass is always greener, but I might rather be wearing your shoes than mine:)

You don't know what you want to do.  Well, you have time to find out.  I don't know what I want to do either, except I'm 20 years older than you.  I have several pieces of paper that say I am an educated person, but in the grand scheme of things aren't all that important.

Continue to try to get a job.  Many jobs have tuition assistance, and will pay for you to go to school.  Consider community college, which is very very cheap (at least here it is).  Receptionist work pays comparatively well around here (I'm sorry I don't know your job market) and is easy to learn to do.

And, as Winston Churchill said, "If you're going through hell, keep going."
