I fear that some form of national socialist approach (minus the rather ridiculous Uebermensch theory) is the most likely candidate. The Romans - indeed every successful empire I can think of, enjoyed success when their governing principles and direction were national socialist in all but name. They and indeed every failing empire I can think of, failed when these principles and directions were undermined and abandoned. In short, being a bunch of assholes tends to work, whereas lofty idealism tends to fail.

Empires usually die because of overstretch, they come and go, what is happening to the US is no different to what happened to other empires. Cultures die or more accurately, become irrelevent because they become decadent. The US is just the latest western Empire but all of us are part of the greater western culture. The vast majority of us seem more concerned with material wealth than other reasons for being. Arabic culture was once a dominant, forward looking culture before it became decadent and started to fail. Culture and imperial power don't necessarily go together, power usually stems from a dynamic culture, not the other way round. While there are pockets of dynamism in western culture, there is not a dominant thrust, there is no vision, other than to have a materially easy life. Think about it, if scientists are right, in another twenty - thirty years the climate will change so much everyone will be struggling. Yet no one is seriously addressing that problem, we are more concerned about how much oil costs in the immediate future when all we will have, is an immediate future if the scientists are right.
