Yes that is correct it is a depressant, if someone tells you they hate you and then tells you it was the alcohol speaking , they lie. It only suppresses your inhibitions and we all need those for mainly political reasons. This is why attending Christmas parties is a mistake if you hate your boss.

In the service, at a beer call, everything that was said at such events was negated the day after, as beer in, sense out, that including lobbing bread buns at the Officer's heads and using the Officer's private lavatory sink as a toilet, leaving the sink plug in of course.

A beer call is an event after work where the squadron buys in a few barels of beer  for us to have a big hair let down , the men and the officers together. Despite the usual Officer abuse, which they know about and to some degrees expect, it always was a good time to swap ideas away from the officialdom of service hierachy.

A drunk soldier got pissy because he tried to hit on a couple of girls and didn't get lucky. No, he deserves no respect for that.

But the drunk girls need to learn to walk away, and not get into pissing contests.

Time for everybody to sober up and stay sober for a while.

I hear the laws in the UK may be changing regarding happy hours and cheap drink offers. Damn shame we will no longer be able to see half naked drunk girls catfighting in the streets alas every new law has it downsides.

I was more thinking about whether you respect the person or their job, I respect the person.

I'm in full agreement. If it helps qualify this, my Dad served in the Royal Air Force, and my Uncle in the army as a bomb disposal expert. Didn't matter a jot to me. No extra respect on the grounds of their chosen career path.

Serving the country? Well, they're not serving me. I didn't ask them to, nor want them to. Don't expect me to be in awe of someone else's idea of 'nobility'.

What they said.

But then, I guess it might be cultural. I have never understood, and know that many others on my side of the pond don't as well, the US American attitude when it comes to the military and its present and former members.

Hello colouredin,

Sorry to hear that you ran into an individual with a serious personality deficiency and an attitude problem.  You are not required to kiss ass to such a troglodyte.  You owe him the basic civil discourse of two strangers in a shop or pub and nothing more.  His problems are just that, HIS.  Did he seem to be drunk or well on the way to being there?

I think the bouncer chose the default course asking you to leave knowing that would be an easier situation then having an angry young soldier starting a fight, and with a woman no less.  He may not even have agreed with the soldier, just wanted to stop any potential problems.  I would even guess that he was trying to protect you from a belligerant man by pretending to agree with him.  Of course you were the one present so your own feelings of the bouncers attitude are far more important.  I am offering a possible explanation for his behavior.  Many years ago I dealt with a similar situation with a drunk who would have trashed the store where I worked and beat up some of the customers.

I hope your weekend is a fun one spent with family and friends and filled with laughter and smiles.

Peace,

Vendaval

We only heard one side of this story, too.  Who knows what really set the soldier off and what he really said.

This is the reason i don't drink alcohol or just have a couple. Behaviour changes completely and what would have been a reasonable convo when sober turns into a heated argument after a few beers.
I run pubs and see this kind of thing happen all the time. Six of one and half a dozen of the other most of the time. If you can't handle your drink, don't drink.

You summed up almost the exact phrase I use with people, miss t.  If you cannot hold your liquor then don't bother drinking it.

one of whom started to have a row with me and told me that i should respect him because he is fighting for queen and country. I argued back that he is younger than me and so at most he could have fought the Iraq war which i disagreed with anyways. He still argued that I should admire his courage.

if someone starts whining about you not respecting them and their courage - they probably are not worth respect.
