My grandpa would go have a stout to socialise for a whole evening don his pub plus a couple of packets of pork scratchings and that was all.

Last time I tried that the land lady said this isn't a social club if you ain't going to buy anything piss off. Mind you we were only seventeen at the time and congregating there during a lunch break. I think though this example highlights the difference in that in the past it was a social gathering and now they are commercial enterprises where there is not much other consideration than the profit. The funny thing is: if we hadn't been there at the time the place would have been empty so I can't really understand how we were eating into her profit, I think it more likely she just didn't like us because we weren't wearing the appropriate pensioners headgear.[:D]

Even pork scratchings have changed, now we got little crunchy bits of fat whereas before it used to be big rinds, sometimes with a bit of meat on them and definately the pig hairs to let you know it was real.

It can't cost much to produce these things, they are a by product industry, so why have they become so poor and expensive. Even crisp, (potato chips) used to be affordable and one would munch a few packs a night, now, forget it, nearly a third the cost of a pint.

So, has everything actually increased in price, or is it our standard of living has slid.

My pub is a small village pub where my customers come out to socialise and have a quiet pint. Supermarkets etc are killing the tradition of social drinking. Instead we have people coming out to get absolutely blasted on cheap alco pops and such and they ruin it for everyone who just wants to enjoy a pint and a chat with others.

Here! Here!

I remember going out to the pub one evening and being pelted with some bottles by some instant arseholes.  Whilst most people drink responsibly, some definitely cannot.  As ever it is a handful of idiots, the one percenters, that ruin it for everyone else.

I used to buy cheap beer (£1/ US$2 per four pack) from the supermarkets, but now it never seems to be in stock, so I wondering if they are phasing the cheap booze or perhaps it sells as fast they put it on the shelf?

I dont think that supermarket prices should be forced up to match pub prices. When you go to a pub you are paying for the atmosphere too thats why its always going to be more expensive.

Noone is saying supermarkets should be equally priced to the pubs. What the government and the landlords are saying is that they should be more in line with each other.
I wish that when you were going to the pub you were paying for the atmosphere. That may well at one time have been true but not now. Very very little is made on a pint nowadays.

so perhaps if all that came out of beer profits then fair enough

How much do you think is made on a pint of a beer ?

Why should people who wish to drink at home pay pub prices, when it is none of that extra money goes to paying for their own house ?

They shouldn't and noone is suggesting they should. Again i will say the idea is to bring the prices more in line with each other.
In a way you do pay for the priveledge of drinking at home, cheap beer. Your taxes include payment towards the police service, ambulance and fire service. People who cause trouble due to high intakes of alcohol and get arrested, you are paying for that. People who get stoted on cheap alcohol and leave their chip pan on, fire service has to come out, you are paying for that. Accident due to high intakes of cheap alcohol, ambulance, you are paying for that.
So please do not try and tell me that there is not a high payment for those who drink cheap alcohol at home or in the pub.

Or is it, by making alcohol pub priced, it is a cynical attempt to force people out to the businesses that sell alcohol ? just a thought.

I cannot believe you would say this after all the evidence that points towards it being a good thing to bring beer prices more into line. Your argument of why should we pay more has been answered time and again with valid good points. You still have not given a valid reason why this should not happen.

You're not drinking in the right pubs. [;)]

I was raised in Detroit Michigan. When I was young there were Bars /Pubs as you call them on every street corner. You culd take a 2 blocks walk either way and find at least 10 of them. They were called neighboorhood bars. With changing population demographics there are very few left open now. Most of the new ones that are open now are speciaity bars. Like martini bars ect. The stores have always been cheaper than bars. You can buy booze anywhere here in all kinds of stores. If you go across into Canada you have to buy your booze from Goverment owned stores. The price difference. I can buy a 30 pack of beer here for under $15. A six pack in Canada cost $12.  If you own a bar here and sell to someone who is drunk then you can be sued if that person gets into a accident.

Over here if i serve someone intoxicated or under age i'm liable for a huge fine and possible loss of my licence or at the very least conditions being placed on my licence.
I can also be prosecuted if someone intoxicated leaves my premises and gets into an accident, causes trouble or becomes ill from high alcohol consumption.

Dnomyar -> RE: Is Britain going to have to end happy hour? (11/24/2008 10:39:53 AM)

If you sell to under aged drinkers you will be shut down weather a bar or a store. They send in under aged kids to see if any establishment will sell to them. It is entrapment but they don't care. They do the same for cigarettes

Forgive me, but you did say earlier your brewery will not spend the money on your pub because the takings were not enough, that does indicate that if takings were better, they might spend the money on rennovation. The brewery's money comes from beer sales does it not ?

MissT, I am not being facetious here, I genuinely read with interest your answers to my assumptions, you being on the other side of the bar than myself. I can only see what I see from my position, which might or might not be the truth as you know it, but it is what I hear from beer lovers like myself. Not only beer drinkers, but real ale fans who are very concerned about what we see as the dying throes of the tradition that is the British pub.

Believe me, I do not like to be drinking the cheap continental mini bottles of beer, but they suffice as they are cheap, and I can enjoy an evening with friends all of whom smoke, without breaking the bank. To notice, those pubs that provide an area for smokers outside, now it is winter, it is cold and often wet, why endure that. My local has erected a tarpaulin for smokers, but has been told by whoever that he can no longer provide heating in the form of patio heaters for his clientele that are outside smoking and drinking. The heating gone, that is the last straw, it is far more comfortable to drink at home.

I do genuinely feel for those involved at the sharp end of the beer trade.
