Lockit -> I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 5:06:57 PM)

I just moved in here and I am sure I haven't pissed anybody off yet...  My fridge has always had this little tick sound every couple of minutes.  Odd... but it works so I try to live with it until I can afford a new one.  I just heard a louder pop sound... almost like a circut breaker popping but louder.  Now it is ticking constantly.  Am I going to explode here or what?

I just filled it... it cannot die!

winterlight -> RE: I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 5:08:05 PM)

can you rent one somewhere? I don't know anything about fixing anything..

Lockit -> RE: I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 5:09:18 PM)

I would like to avoid that, but it is a solution if it does explode or just dies. lol  Thanks!

Sounds like the drip pan, found a link

I think you need a service call.

Who owns the place?  The property manager or owner should have it checked out.  If you are worried about potential food spoilage I recommend getting an ice chest and bags of ice for storage.

Thanks DesFIP!

OK, what company is the manufacturer and do you have a warranty?  Can you give a call to the service dept at the store where you purchased it?

Lockit -> RE: I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 5:26:16 PM)

No it came with the place... the as is place. lol  I guess I will have to break down and just go get a new one.  I can't see putting money into an older unit.  Rent a center here I come... lol  I just bought everything to put into this place and bought it outright so am kind of broke at the moment.  Maybe a used one with a three month warrenty would work until I can save some more money.  I can fix lots of stuff.. but electrical and kitchen stuff... total ignornace!

DesFIP -> RE: I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 5:29:03 PM)

Lockit, if you do have to get a new one, remember it won't be cold until it's been plugged in for 24 hours. Maybe get dry ice to keep stuff cold.

The ticking sound is more than likely the clock motor.  This little motor acts as a timer to turn on/off the compressor.  If this has died, your 'fridge will either run constantly or not at all.  The motor itself is not expensive but the service call is the killer :(

Also, if it's more than 10 yrs old, it's costing more to run than a new one.

If you can't buy a replacement, try Rent-A-Center for a short term solution.  If you need one on the cheap, look for a Sears Appliance Outlet.  They have tons of appliances that work fine but may have a scratch or dent.  Big savings :)

Best of luck!

not sure if any of this link will help but I am hoping that some of them may be able to point you to the right choice of rent a center or repair or buy second hand ....
http://www.appliance411.com/faq/fridge-sounds.shtml
do you know what brand and model the frig is ... that would help narrow down the search

Lockit -> RE: I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 5:37:02 PM)

I have heard it kick on and off since the pop... so it is still running.  I just need it to stay cool overnight at least.  If it is major and stops, I can call my daughter to do a midnight run I guess.  Dang silly mother's movin into town and bringing midnight drama! lol

Thanks for all your help everyone.  I get to be a silly helpless thing when I panic about more shopping for big dollar items after I have been shopping too much already!  I haven't found a fixer upper guy in town yet... well besides my son in law... but he does have a wife to attend to!  I guess I will get to meet more people in town quicker than I thought! lol

Thank you all!

My parent's fridge ticks when there is something blocking the little arm on the ice maker... it's worth a shot. [:D]

Maybe try a used one, if you have a pick-up and strong back available?  Or just go to Ripoff Rentals until you can find one that way?

BlackPhx -> RE: I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 9:02:45 PM)

Lockit...

STOP!!! Don't rent you pay way too much that way even in the short run... Nearly every place around is doing the 12 month, 18 month, 3 year same as cash, no finance charge or interest. Use their money and put the payments aside each month in an account that will earn interest. Then pay off at the final due date, you pay no finance charges, get the unit you want on sale, and have full warranty.

You have to have the discipline to out the money away but it is what Blackphx and I do and so far it has meant we could get far more bang for our buck, especially since he invests part of the payment in stock..we end up with a profit on our purchases.

I have never heard of a refrigerator exploding.  It does sound like it could die any day.  Avoid going to any of those rent-to-own places, they will charge you way too much.  Check out this link to find a freecycle group near you: http://www.freecycle.org/group/US/Missouri If you post there you might be able to find someone who has one sitting their garage they want to get rid of.

If it does stop running the best temporary solution is to leave everything in there.  After all, the box will still have the same amount of insulation without the motor running.  So just go pick up a couple 5# blocks of ice and stick them in the drawers.  It will be just like having everything in cooler.  As long as you avoid opening the doors the food will stay cold in there for a day or two while you bring in another frig and give it time to cool off.  Likewise as long as you leave the door closed most of the stuff in the freezer compartment will be fine.  The ice cream might melt but frozen meat and vegitables will not thaw significantly.

I second the recommendation on finding a newer model that might have a scratch or a dent for a deep discount.

So has it become a black hole yet?  You put things in there and poof!  they disappear without a trace?

NeedToUseYou -> RE: I think my fridge is a bomb... hehe... help? (11/23/2008 10:05:02 PM)

Before you scrap it, you really should turn it around and try to hear or see where the pop is coming from. Either things are very easy to fix or impossible at a reasonable price. I just got a dryer that someone was going to throw away for free, and they already got a new one. I just popped the back off and a wire had corroded, it took literally 5 minutes to fix, and got a free dryer that works perfect. People throw 200.00 dollar items away all the time, that only need a .25 part. LOL. Maddening. I'm going to run an ad in the paper for that stuff. It really is suprising how much of it is easily fixable.

If it is a loud snap it could be an electric pop, there could be a bare wire. I don't work on refrigerators, but if that is the case, it could be fixed in 5 minutes. I'd unplug it pull it out, completely clean it out, and check that everything is secure. Beyond that if it is old, well, buy a new as a service call for an old fridge is hardly worth it. Like I said I don't work on fridges, but everything I've popped open I'd say about a quarter of them were something dumb like a wire loose, so you may get lucky. Just unplug it before you put your hand in there, however, I tend to be more suicidal, and wiggle suspect wires with it on, LOL, but I'm used to 120 volt shocks. Don't do that with a TV or microwave though, that could kill you. You could wear rubber gloves, and wiggle stuff, to isolate it. My guess is if its not electrical its probably the compressor, I've had those make more than normal audible pops dings, whatever describes that noise.
