merry fucking christmas, thats all I have to say.

This is just a really disgusting story. Walmart needs to be sued for negligence for not planning better, but the customers responsible need to be held criminally liable. Also I'm surprised no one has mentioned that a pregnant customer was trampled and lost the baby. I hope everyone involved thinks about the 2 lives they ended everytime time they watch their shitty offbrand tv that they needed to save $20 on. Why don't people realize that they don't need this shit? Dignity is worth more than a discount dvd player.

AngelGeena -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 11:29:01 PM)

I apologize if it sounded as though I was snapping back at anyone.  That was not my intention.  Blame it on a black friday at Walmart....*grins and smirks*

On a side note, I worked at Target while living in Indy and I loved working for them.  They were tougher to work for, expected more out of less people and actually paid less money.  (All of which kinda sucks)  But you knew exactly what was expected of you and people got their job done without all the whining and back stabbing that seems to go on at Walmart.

Oh well...

The woman was reported in good condition.  From the article:  "A 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital, where she and the baby were reported to be OK, said police Sgt. Anthony Repalone."

I haven't been in a Walmart store in about 6-8 years since that scandal about them hiring illegal aliens.
You have to consider the people who shop at Walmarts, lots of lowlifes.
You're pretty much "on your own" in those kind of stores.
The low paid employees couldn't give a shit it seems.
And I remember dodging all kinds of spills and stuff on the floor.
I felt like I needed a shower after comming out of a Walmart.
I'd much rather pay $50 yearly dues to Costco and get *much* better service and better quality stuff than the junk at Walmart.
The service you get from Costco employees is outstanding! If you ask them where something is they don't just tell you, they walk you right to it. "Sure, follow me!"
And they're always very friendly and smiling.
Huge difference!
And their stores are CLEAN too.
"Hey, where'd you get that shirt?"
"Oh, I got it at Wa......Sears."
Couldn't agree more. Wonder why it is so hard for people to connect "cheap Chinese shit" at Wallyworld with "ain't no jobs". Duh.
I just renewed my Costco membership. Damn good company.

So you don't go to Walmart because it's a Chinese company? Who do you think owns Costco?

I read that a pregnant women was taken to the hospital, but nothing mentioned her losing the baby. Where did you read this?

He was referring to all the products made in China that Wal-Mart relies on.

I have no idea what you are talking about.  Neither Wal-Mart nor Costco is owned by the Chinese.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/29/2008 7:04:55 AM)

I NEVER will shop at Walmart. Walmart was single handedly the end of Main Street America. Mom and Pop Hardware store could not compete. They are also responsible for the death of manufacturing in America. To compete with the low prices WalMArt would pay the only recourse for the manufacturers was to outsource to other countries. I feel much better going to TArget. If people would be willing to not always take the cheapest price, we may still have jobs in manufacturing in the US.

Oh, that's good. Here they were reporting that she lost the baby. Still a terrible story, but that is a bonus.

Termyn8or -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/29/2008 2:06:11 PM)

I have a great deal of disdain for Walmart, their business practices, their ways and means, and I don't go there. I also try to see all sides of an issue.

However in this case, I can't fathom any reasoning that would put the blame on Walmart. None whatsoever. I don't care if they had brand new Rolls Royces for a dollar, it is simply not their fault, plain and simple.

So this is what the sheeple have become, nothing but cattle that needs to be penned up and fenced in.

What if someone had been killed outside instead ? Would that indemnify Walmart ? What if someone got into a car wreck  heading for Walmart, sue them anyway ? What if someone broke their leg in a hurry to get to their car to drive to Walmart, that's their fault as well ?

This is as ridiculous as suing gun manufacturers for firearm deaths, I mean when there was no defect in the firearm. I can understand if it goes off without someone pulling (or squeezing) the trigger, but if it operates properly, it is a ridiculous premise for a lawsuit and a very bad precedent to set.

Look at how people drive on the highway, it is clear that people simply have no regard for the safety or well being of others. You want another one ? It happened years ago in Cinncinati, Ohio. Just look for Cinncinati Ohio festival seating (I think it was a Who concert). Several people died vying for better seats at a rock concert. Who is to blame ? I say it's not the owner of the establishment, nor the band, nor their producers or promoters. The blame lies with the people, period.

Someone backed into my Father's Oldsmobile in their Chevy. Who do I sue GM ? Or maybe whoever sold them the gasoline.  How about the tire mnufacturer, after all without these in place the accident could have been prevented. Without anti-freeze the engine would have overheated and locked up thus preventing the accident, so the producer of the antifreeze is equally and severally liable no ? As well as the ones who sold the oil in the engine, the fluid in the transmission. By this screwed up logic today I guess the only one who could not be considered at fault is the firm that sold the brake fluid in the car, except that their brake fluid failed to detect something in the way and failed to cause auto-application of the brakes on that Chevy. Damn, could have sued almost everyone including the steel mill that provided the metal for that Chevy. And to think, he settled for three hundred bucks. Want me to go on ? Chevys have Bosch fuel injectors, now a dented car door is an international incident ! Don't forget that the Chevy would not have started without a battery, so sue them too, bastards !

You picking up what I am laying down here ? I have no love for Walmart, I don't go there I don't like them I think their shit is junk and I think they have harmed the economy of this country.  But I simply can't lay this one on them. It's the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time.

Lips, well said.
And that's "corporate greed" for you.
It's becomming less and less popular to be known as a "Walmart shopper" these days. Almost a stigma attached to it.
Like someone who walks their dog without a pooperscooper and gets yelled at by passers-by.
I'd like to be parked in their parking lot with a camera when they have a "Spandex Sale" going on sometime![sm=jaw.gif]
But, ...if they "need" those toxic toys from China for their kids...

Founder & CEO Jim Senegal started the store. No China connection at all, according to Snopes.

Stores have an obligation to provide a safe shopping and working environment. A simple solution to knowing crowds and possible mob scenes would have been to provide organized entry into the store.

That said, I don't shop at WalMart after seeing "The High Cost of WalMart" as I believe they are a destructive force in this country.

Companies put a lot of money into experts that know how to get inside consumers' heads.  Ultimately, each individual is responsible for their actions.  Companies also have culpability when they just go too ever loving far.  Don't be so naive as to think these folks don't know exactly the climate they are creating.  There are a lot of folks who want to give their families a nice holiday, but are also short on cash.  There is so much emotion attached to an empty tree, especially where children are involved.  Add to that a bunch of folks that just want a bargain because it's there and it is a recipe for disaster.  None of this excuses folks' behavior.  It is, however, predictable and therefore must be accounted for and curbed.

There is also the matter of trying to figure out who was intentionally stomping the man, who was too negligent to notice what they were doing, and those who never wanted to step on him, but was caught in the wave just as much as he was (with lesser consequences, granted).  There were innocent people involved even in the "mob".  I certainally would like to think that I would not have to spend years in prison for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

As someone with a family member or two that was at the mercy of such crowds as employeed just like this man, I am scared for them every single Black Friday because of all the insanity.  One family member recounts stories of intentional understocking with a memo handed out prior to the day showing what is to be offered WHEN they run out of sale items, not if  (most of these items are of lesser quality and cost more than the sale item).  He recounts people raising fists to hit him because the item they wanted is gone (like it's his fault).  He is also responsible for opening the doors and has nearly been trampled several times.  I hate the people for being such vicious, bloodsucking demons.  I also hate the company for putting him in harm's way like that every single year with the atrocity of it all mounting each time.  I don't let ANYONE off the hook for something such as this.  One day it could be a loved one of mine that is a victim to the corporate greed and mindless, ravenous consumer mob.

Here i go telling my age again when young the youngest of 5 my mom actually shopped Year around sale wise hence no empty tree We were asked if We could have but one item that year [actually this qustion was asked every Year ] what we wanted the most and most times we got that item pursonally i liked my stocking the most my diecast match box cars the buddly L trucks [one a year ] are still prized by me most of said items were purchased aft er Christmas or my mom's green stamps  holidays arn't what they used to be enough said

But they are scarlet, responsible for the conditions that caused it!

So do people really think an employee or two with "Crowd control training" and a fricking rope line would stop a crowd that broke down a door??

Yes I do.

It there was a single file line, continually doubling back, the down the length of the building, it would have put the people in a manageable position. This is easily done by very portable, rope style or steel people moving barriers. Add a few extra security guards and perhaps a couple of off duty uniformed police officers and some common sense crowd control training tactics as part of an SOP and it would have been extremely difficult for a mob to form in the first place. Why don't understand this? It's very simple..

I tend to disagree. Granted, most sober people will stand placidly in a line if you tell them too, but start adding in a few with an altered mental status, and you can run into problems.

Case in point, this season at our haunted house, we had a particuarly bad fight break out when a group of men were asked to stop in our little "Rules room". Employees were tossed, managers were punched, and cops were everywhere... even though we use little ropes to keep everyone in line.

We also employ off duty police officers to contain the stupidity, but as you can see, sometimes it just isn't going to work.

I admit that perhaps walmart could have planned better, but if a crowd is going to break down a couple of commercial doors, and trample people, I'd think you might need more than some ropes and a police officer to stop them once they got started.

Amen. previous posters have pointed out that Costco imports Chinese goods as well. That may be; I only go there for bulk food. Their business practices are far more ethical than Wallyworld's.
Here's why Walmart sucks:

Raechard -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/29/2008 3:32:27 PM)

The other issue could be irresponsible advertising, I suppose. It’s hard to contain the mob once it has formed, a sad reflection of society but then maybe it is the difference between being on the breadline and having a bit more comfort zone through Christmas for some people.
