mistoferin -> The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 8:11:34 AM)

CollarMe is a BDSM oriented website. I've been participating on these boards for a few years now and I've learned some amazing things here about how others look at BDSM. BDSM is the reason that I am here. There are other areas of the boards that deal with many topics that are not BDSM related that I also like to participate on down here in these sections of the boards. Many of the folks here post all over the place. But there is a large group of posters who only post to these lower sections and never venture into the upper half of the boards which is the "meat" of the site.

I don't ask this to be disrespectful but more out of a "hmmmm, I wonder why?". For those of you who don't ever participate in the BDSM related topics.....why this site? It would seem to me that there are sites more directly related to politics....and there are lots of chatrooms that are similar to the "random stupidity" section. If BDSM wasn't what you were interested in, why was CollarMe a draw for you?

MrQwerty -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 8:24:34 AM)

I just assume most people come here for one reason and stay for another. I’ve never had much interest discussing BDSM, I have occasionally but always end up feeling it’s a topic with a bunch of opinions and no real facts. What it means to someone it doesn’t mean to someone else and when two people agree they see themselves as some kind of authority on the subject.
I didn't come to this site to talk about things I just happened to read parts of the board one day and found these people were having good discussions about everyday events but they were obviously misguided and needed my worldview.[:D]

LadyEllen -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 8:26:14 AM)

Been on plenty of sites that deal with what is discussed in off topic here; I have to say we have for the most part a wonderful group of well informed people who participate here - and even if one disagrees with their views one can for the most part have a reasonable discussion. This is by no means my experience on sites dedicated to the subjects discussed here on off topic.

And there's the upper part of the boards too; so everything is here that I want, all in one place.

I first started looking at the CollarMe website for the "other" side...the profiles.  I had probably been visiting CollarMe for a couple of years before I even looked at the the other options like the message boards.  Even today I first go to the profiles section, and while looking through the profiles and reading mail, etc. I watch the scrolling window and only go onto the message boards when something comes up in the window that I am interested in.  It is only rarely that I will actually go to the message board home page to try to find an old thread or anything of that nature.

BbwCanaDomme -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 8:44:12 AM)

For me this site is more about meeting people with similar interests. That being said, if they're on this site, I know they have similar interests. I don't need more details than that unless I plan to play with them at somepoint. BDSM is a personal thing for me, I prefer to keep my thoughts/discussions about it private.

MsStarlett -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 8:46:55 AM)

Guess I'm the opposite.  I rarely post anywhere but in the "Ask a Mistress" section.  It's sort of my little 'safe haven' of FemDom-ness.  Most of the other parts tend to lean to heavily toward MaleDom/femsub chatter.  That's fine for them, but not my thing.

As for the 'lower section'... I have three other boards that I participate in for that sort of stuff.  Sometimes I get a wild hair to just read the jokes on all my boards and C&P them around in circles.

*Sometimes MrQ gives me such a girly-hardon but don't tell him that*

I used to only read and post in the top section.  Then I found that I was letting a certain person irritate me, so I took a break from the top and found the bottom.  (gosh that sounds so dirty!)

Now I do both the top and the bottom.  *wanders away confused cuz she's not switchy*

Termyn8or -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 9:36:19 AM)

A couple of factors. For me, I am not all that active these days, so there is not much to say on the "topside". Also many like to keep their relationship private. And then there are those who are looking but not finding, so how much would they have to say on the topside ?

The bottom here is an excellent diversion.

The rest of the fora here aren't particularly "BDSM" related, Erin, so much as they are "DS/MS" related.  I don't bother with power exchange, ever.  Been there, done that, found out it's a particularly BAD idea for me with very little exception.  My experiences with ds and ms haven't been positive - so I avoid getting involved in discussions pertaining to them.  Folks neither need nor want to hear "It doesn't work" when they're talking about ds and ms, and that is about all I have to say for it from personal experience.  Since the topics are all about something I have no use for or other opinion on, it makes no sense for me to bother reading (or commenting on) the other portions of the boards.  You'll never see me in the upper boards - though for a while a few years ago I did post primarily there and avoided these lower boards.  Then I finally got completely honest with myself, and quit posting to the boards at all for a long time, before coming back and getting involved in these non-power exchange related discussions.

So why am I involved in a BDSM site when I don't do what many on CM seem to think is "the" reason to get involved in BDSM?  Because I AM involved in BDSM - Bondage, Discipline, Sado-Masochism - just not in power exchange games.  I still have a profile because I enjoy meeting people that share at least some of my interests (at least sometimes.)  I still have a profile because I've never gotten around to deleting it, and I still enjoy the disccusions on THIS end of the boards.  I still have it because it amuses me, at times when I need to be amused, to watch those who consider themselves "standard" in BDSM display so little tolerance for those portions of the same hobby that they consider "non-standard".  Because I like to laugh at those who turn a hobby into a pseudo-religious "lifestyle" choice.  Because I can.

I have been on CollarMe for over 4 years now.
I really just started posting on the message boards about 2 1/2 years ago.
I used to post on the "upper" boards a lot, I still read the "upper" boards pretty
much daily.
Personally, I got tired of reading the "same" sort of topics over and over and over,
and reading the snarky and often critical  remarks by many of the resident BDSM
experts.

I love the Offtopic section, there are a lot of people "down here" that I enjoy "chatting" with
on a regular basis, I have actually learned a lot, my points of view are often challenged, and I
find so many "issues" "situations", "ways of viewing the world and life", political matters and points of views, that make me dig deeper, want to read and learn more and THINK!!

I am only interested in a relationship with a submissive man at this time, so I "live" the BDSM lifestyle {whatever that is}, but there is SO much more to me, then thinking and chatting about kink.

I am one of the few women around here that enjoys the politics, world events, and endless debates that we have on here, in fact I start many of them! [:D]
The "offtopic" section rocks, and I feel safer down here.
I have cut back on reading and posting on the boards,  but I tend to peek in the Offtopic
section daily, even if it's just for a few minutes.
As always to each their own.

I agree with everything you said, EXCEPT the last line matey!
We have a lot of "experts" down here also, if just depends on who
you agree with.[;)]

....came for the chatrooms, stayed for the debates.........

...besides, i like the idea that someone can say butt plug in a political discussion without it spiralling off into a discussion of the pros and cons of butt plugs.......

Lordandmaster -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 11:55:00 AM)

I'll be honest--this has bothered me.  I contribute plenty to the political threads, but I think of them as something like cranberry sauce to the big turkey that is the BDSM forums.  (Well, that analogy kinda sucked, but you know what I mean.)  Anyway, I also see people who never say anything except in the political forums (and usually it's the same line over and over).  I have to wonder what on earth is drawing them to Collarme?

See im the opposite, i use this section sometimes (actually a fair bit recently) but i dont stay because the taking sides and personal grudges is far more prevelent here than elsewhere. Also thouhg CM is an international site its dominanted by people from the US which means that it deals mostly with stuff from that side of the pond.

persephonee -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 12:07:08 PM)

i tend to thread jack...so i come down here to get my fix...and the topics upstairs do tend to repeat themselves...when i first came here, i was offended by the snark about n00bies and their questions...but now i tend to roll my eyes too.
Actually there are more prolific discussion boards out there but this ones format and the people i have met here bring me back time after time...
CM is kind of a home base for me online. Just as my dungeon is my home base in realtime.

I've wondered the same thing.  Perhaps they also post at political message boards?

Well let's be fair now, there are plenty on the "upper boards" that tend to say the same damn things
over and over.
Most of us know what they are going to say, just by looking at the screen names.
Let's keep it real now.
Anyway those of us that "live" down here, enjoy it down here, and in the end that is all that matters!

NorthernGent -> RE: The bottom part of the boards (11/30/2008 12:42:48 PM)

These days, I'd say I post roughly equal amounts between the two.

There are advantages associated with being down here:

a) A wide range of interests is important to me.

b) It's less cliquey. I think the posters down here are less concerned with attaching themselves to groups - ironic considering this is the politics section (throws weight behind the every one is political argument, I suppose). There's the celebrity aspect, too, which isn't really for me. That said, certain posters are well worth a read up there, and there are some useful tips to be had.
