Obama uses security team to raise cash
Why should any President Elect need or receive private funds to aid in his "transition" to high office?

Is this really necessary, or is bureaucracy run amok, resulting in not a meritocracy but a plutocracy? Does this not further sell our government to the highest bidder?

I believe the answer to this is in the 6th paragraph of the article you linked.

Recent presidents have raised private transition money because the government’s contribution isn’t enough pay all the staff needed to vet appointees, study agencies and chart policy. Also, taxpayer dollars can’t be used for certain purposes, such as relocating new hires.

The Obama-Biden Transition Project was created to supplement the $6.3 million in taxpayer funds Obama will receive for his transition efforts. He raised $1.17 million in the first 11 days after the election and needs about $4.5 million more in private donations.

Those were taken from the very article your OP is about so I'd say your question is already answered within the article itself.

I'm very well aware of what the article says.

I am not persuaded that Presidents Elect "need" this sort of extra-governmental assistance. In fact, given that the "transition" under consideration is that of filling government positions, I am distinctly uncomfortable with any sort of private funding for such activities.

I am even more uncomfortable with the notion that the collection plate be passed every time a President Elect makes an announcement or holds a press conference.

How necessary is all this transition staff and funding....really?

I'd say that's a question for someone who's personally been there and seen it done first hand. I'd have no clue, but it does appear to me our federal government at the highest levels, at this moment, is a train wreck.

Seems to have become the "norm". I would think that the government could allocate more money for the vetting in particular, not exactly an understandable situation.I would have no issue with the raising of the money from private sources for relocating of staff and appointees but, with the cost of the hearings for approval, I think vetting is important and would be a government responsibility.

So.............then I guess you must have been on this crusade for years now since Bush raised enormous amounts of cash through private fundraising for his transition and also his two inaugurations.

Sir, you wound me.  I'm Scots and Irish, and you expect me to complain about a party?

Besides, the inauguration balls are the only balls Dear Leader will ever have, so why begrudge them to him?

Yeah, because using government funds for a government function is just SO far out there.

Just once I would like a breakdown of how it could cost more than $6.3 million for this transition to take place over a period of what?  10 weeks?  Yet people say that the allocated amount is not enough and we all just accept it?
Yes, I am sure it is perfectly reasonable to look at these numbers and not realize that the simple arithmetic for additional funds needed to beraised is more than an additional 5 1/2 million...DOLLAR$.  Almost double.
No wonder we're in trouble.  I want to know why this all costs so damn much.
And for the record, I agree with CL...it is atrocious now and it was atrocious then.

People should pay their own moving expense. They are all rich enough. and the balls should be a potluck where someone brings the jello salad no one wants to touch. *shivers*

The transition has to find and vet 20 cabinet level officials plus white house staffers plus assistant secretaries plus ambassadors plus postions like Director of National Intelligence as well as heads of the major federal agencies. All told estimates are that 1,125 people have to be appointed by the POTUS and approved by senate vote.
http://www.brookings.edu/articles/2001/spring_governance_pfiffner.aspx

11 million dollars to recruit 1100+ top managers in a 10 week period strikes me as a very good bargain. That's about $10k per official to be appointed.

I will say the grasping at straws complaints are starting to look a touch desperate at this point.
