Like most of the replies that I've read, I agree that there is no time period to wait. It is not a mourning ritual for when to start dating again, or some other thing. It is a tattoo. The only thing that would stop me is, do I have a design yet to cover it, and, do I have the money. Timing is just a question of my mood or attitude. To the original issue of getting a tattoo. My mark is not my name. My name is a symbol given to me by my parents and resides on my driver's license, birth certificate and every other government document I can think of. My mark is a symbol of who I believe myself to be, and, in my case is a very specific and meaningful symbol. Not to be taken not given away lightly. That being said, one can always explain away a symbol. If you wish to tell the next person you're with that it is the symbol of someone, then so be it and the relationship will be stronger for it. If you choose not to because it is to hurtful or something, then don't say it was his. It is your option. However, it is a representation of your past. A mapping of your path and should be nothing to be ashamed of. Rather, each mark or bruise, or cut, or wrinkle is a story. A lesson in life good or bad. Rejoice in them and move on.
