I find it odd that someone would assume that a friend of yours would necessarily be a playmate. I would never make that assumption in the absence of some specific information that would compel me to.
If you're finding that many Dominants are making this assumption (that you and your submissive friend are playing together), you might want to examine the text of your various communications about your friend to see if in your wording you are inadvertently suggesting a play relationship. In fact, you could show your communications to someone whose judgement you trusted and ask for their objective opinion.
