Christine, I've been carless now for just about 2 years....first, I relied heavily on the buses, and the goodness of a friend who would let me borrow her car when I needed to shop. She'd relieve me at work, and was there for 10 hours, so I had her car for my use....of course, I gassed it up even when all I did was go to the grocery store. Then I looked around and invested in my scooter....yeah, it's chinese, and yeah, there was the engine issue, but once it got taken care of, I haven't had any problems with her....oops, had to replace the starter, but now that I have a reliable repair shop, I'm getting along great. I have 3 different sized backpacks I use, and yes, do my grocery shopping on it. I'm only shopping for me and my cats, but you'd be amazed what I can get into a backpack now! I also use the bus/bike thingy here.....I bike to a stop and pick up the bus.....they have racks on the front you can put them on. The only drawback there is there are only two spaces on the rack, but I've always been able to get on the bus. I get the exercise that I need, and my job also subsidizes the bus fares....they pay 1/2, I pay 1/2. Also, in these times of gas prices going every which way, carpooling is often a great option to look at...even if you can't help with the driving, you can help with the cost of the gas. And our bus company offers a van pool system...you get a group of co-workers together, they GIVE you a huge van to carpool in, and the responsible party gets an extra 300 miles a moth for personal use. Maybe there is something similair where you're going? Good luck with everything.....new starts are sorta scary, but they are also great fun! Trust me, I'm the QUEEN of new starts......
