I've been without a car for months at a time. It's doable if you live where there are plenty of other options, like taxis or mass transit. Walking (or biking or skating... x-country skiing or snow-shoeing during the winter) is a great way to get around if you're close enough but let's face it... there are going to be some days where you're not feeling up to it. That's when having other motorized options come in handy.

The previous mention of a scooter is good but a bicycle with an electric motor works better when your only storage option is to put it inside your living quarters... no possible gasoline fumes to deal with.

Jeesus Christine.  Look around you.  It is your patriotic AMERICAN duty to go out and buy a car.  Or Two.  Or THREE.   And none of these well-engineered foreign jobs, NO SIR.  You go and buy yourself the worst p.o.s. Detroit iron you can find (I recommend a Mercury Montego or anything produced by the late, lamented American Motors Corporation of Milwaukee WI.  -- If it says Rambler, it has to be good!)

The rest of you who talk about biking, skating, Segway'ing or walking are godless commies who are driving this country to the brink of a depression...well NOT driving...but you know what I mean.

I do not own a car. I have a bike with a basket and of course, I walk A LOT. The only issue I have ever had was once a cashier at the grocery commented that I must be really bored because I was in there pretty much every other day to pick up a few items. Her tone kinda made me feel like an insect but I got over it pretty quick. lol

Emp....oh hell, i have to make an admission...if i had the funds right now i'd have the newest, biggest dodge ram extended cab pickup they make!  navy blue with tan leather interior, a bose system and heated seats so my bum doesnt' have to be cold in the mornings.

twilight, the next time she makes a comment to you, l her you're keeping her in her low paying job and she should be grateful.  geesh, i can't believe the gall of some people.

Oh , I'm torn.  Because in my toy collection I've owned said sort of truck (vintage, tho -- F150 from the golden years, with club cab and aux. gas tank).  But in fact my daily driver is the Honda Civic Hybrid with all the accessories (I figured I was going small and frugal to accomodate the 80 mi/day commute, but I wanted ALL the trimmings!)  So I'd pull up to you and look dismissively at your Dodge Ram Hogg -- if I could see up into the cab, that is.  The Honda rides kinda low....

...which brings up the problem of Truck Nutz.   hell, in the Honda sometimes those nasty items are EYE LEVEL.  Sheeesh.

Playing cards added to the wheels so people can HEAR Christine pumpin' those pedals from blocks away! Oh and a Fog Horn too! Little mirrors added sticking out the side of the handle bars should complete the look.

Don't forget the tall antenna with the blaze orange safety flag smile..Have you check into the availability of public transportation..Another option is to check those cheap car lots some times they will lease you a rolling rust bucket very reasonable.

LOL

It took me the walk home to realize that myself. Then I quit feeling bad for shopping there all the time. This same woman has also asked me point blank what I do for a living that I am able to go shopping so often.

Wow, I thought I was "roughing it" by not having cable tv for a year

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions, just wishing you the best and hope you enjoy the journey!

You can get a bike like the one Dorothy had in The Wizard of OZ, or Mrs. Gulch... or maybe like PeeWee Herman....

Bike for good weather Christine and carpool for those nasty horrid days. You might be pleasantly surprised by the people you work with.

Yeah what she said Christine
She's really wise (can't wait to meet her in Feb.).
Besides Christine, who could resist your feminine wiles, beauty & charm?

Christine, I've been carless now for just about 2 years....first, I relied heavily on the buses, and the goodness of a friend who would let me borrow her car when I needed to shop.  She'd relieve me at work, and was there for 10 hours, so I had her car for my use....of course, I gassed it up even when all I did was go to the grocery store.  Then I looked around and invested in my scooter....yeah, it's chinese, and yeah, there was the engine issue, but once it got taken care of, I haven't had any problems with her....oops, had to replace the starter, but now that I have a reliable repair shop, I'm getting along great.  I have 3 different sized backpacks I use, and yes, do my grocery shopping on it.  I'm only shopping for me and my cats, but you'd be amazed what I can get into a backpack now!

I also use the bus/bike thingy here.....I bike to a stop and pick up the bus.....they have racks on the front you can put them on.  The only drawback there is there are only two spaces on the rack, but I've always been able to get on the bus.  I get the exercise that I need, and my job also subsidizes the bus fares....they pay 1/2, I pay 1/2.  Also, in these times of gas prices going every which way, carpooling is often a great option to look at...even if you can't help with the driving, you can help with the cost of the gas.  And our bus company offers a van pool system...you get a group of co-workers together, they GIVE you a huge van to carpool in, and the responsible party gets an extra 300 miles a moth for personal use.  Maybe there is something similair where you're going?

Good luck with everything.....new starts are sorta scary, but they are also great fun!  Trust me, I'm the QUEEN of new starts......

Do a big shopping trip every month or every 2 weeks and take a taxi.  It is much less time consuming than trying to carry a bunch of stuff onto the bus, or worse trying to walk with it.  You have to be really organized because if you run out of toilet paper in the middle of the night, you probably don't want to be walking to the store for it.

Personally I can't be without a car, I will even rent one if mine is in the shop.  But if I lived in a big city with good public transportation I could see it.

Actually moon, I have done the cab thing....usually when I'm making a bigger purchase.  And I do the shopping thing every two weeks and stock up on everything.

I didn't think I could live without a car either, but surprisingly enough, the scooter, bus and bike work for me.  And the $$$$ I'm saving is always a good thing......makes getting plane tickets easier!  (My family is in NY......even in a car, it's a 3 day drive!)
