You can always be original - buy a skateboard, a strong dog leash, and a greyhound. It's good to get kneepads and all that, unless you're good on a skateboard, oh and a broom handle, piece of string and cuddly hare for extra speed.

rofl, and thank you stella!  (maybe i could just find a great dane and ride it to work, hell maybe i could go domme and find a male sub and ride him to work!  now i'm thinkin outside the box....)

the area i'm moving to is quite rural so the bus system sucks and it doesnt' get started early enough in the day for me to use it.  i've got a rental car for 2 weeks, i'll figure something out in that amount of time.  it's all good, i'm just so excited!

Check your area Christine, there is probably an Akita Rescue in the area and the shop can make you a small riding sulky with saddlebags. With a 1000 lb pull these dogs can easily run you to work and back and they love snow and cold..just stay frosty and watch out for Cats and Pit Bulls both are hard for them to resist chasing.

poenkitten who has been begging Blackphx, the Master of her heart to build a cart for Komodo so he can bring home his OWN Dayum 50 lb bag of dog food

Have you gone to citydata.com?
A lot of people who are moving to different areas can get a better feel for where they are going by talking to people who are already there.

Good luck!

i've found that if you cut the broomstick to height, it's much easier to stay on top of it, and won't slip out from under one's bum nearly as often.

eta...

This also works well with mop handles and makes mopping the floors much easier.  Otherwise I'd need a slave about 7 feet tall.

Hey chrisy you never did mention it you were going to put gun racks in your pickup.  See if there is a mini smart bus pick up in your area. I live out in the sticks and people here use them a lot.

Christine...this is Pennsylvania, child!

Gun racks are standard on all new/used trucks.

I don't think I'd save that much money.   Car is paid for so no payments, insurance payments are minimal, and I am careful in how I drive it so gas isn't too horrible, especially now.  Buses cost something in terms of money but much more in terms of time.

OH DAMN IT, DAMN IT.  I come on here for the first time in months.  I post about my little Honda Hybrid....and this morning I get into it, and the "check engine" graphic comes on.  No notes.  No codes.   so I drive a bit...and it seems ok, but the hybrid engine isn't kicking in, and the "All stop" isn't working (this car has a weird but very practical feature where at a stop sign or stop light, the engine shuts off, and you start up in first ONLY on electric).  THEN I GET ON THE HIGHWAY and I punch it...and it shudders and DIES.  YIKES.

So I detour from commute to dealer, and they check it out (this car is new...less than 1 year old and about 12K on it).  AND I HAVE....."Varmint damage".  SOMETHING has chewed the main wiring harness, wreaking havoc with the computer, and totalling effing up the hybrid system.  *SIGH*.

I'm gonna go for the dogcart.

E.

Here are a few ideas on bikes:

For riding in the winter you need to break the wind; jackets are easy, and I found a cheap pair of ripstop snow pants works well too. I also found some cross country ski gloves at REI that keep my hands warm down to about 20 degrees -- I like them because it's a lot easier to use brakes and shifters with them compared to other gloves yet they still block the wind. When I've ridden with temps around 20, I've also covered my face with goggles and a scarf to protect from the wind.

I think a rack over the back tire is best for hauling groceries because it doesn't affect handling as much as a handlebar basket; you can bungee on something like a milk crate, and you can haul quite a bit with that and a backpack. The rack will also help water spray from the back tire from making a "skunk" line down your back. A front fender will help keep your feet from getting soaked . . . or at least it will delay it.

If you want to get really fancy you can also find studded knobby tires, but they ain't cheap.

That's everything I know about winter riding. Have fun!

rofl christina!

well i've scouted out a toyota landcruiser that has low miles and it's not too bad a price, actually, it's calling my name.  if it's still there when i have my first full paycheck i might just give into temptation.   if it's not there i might just think about the bike and good walking shoes for a few months.  i really need the voice of sensibility to help me out here.
