See my post above [8D] .

LOL... I saw that... after I posted!  But hey... nice to know that we wouldn't waste a perfectly good excuse to use a gift!  The gift that keeps on giving... now there's a gift! hehe

all my friends thought "OMG the worst gift ever!!!!" when the ex bought me jumper cables and this thingie that plugged into the lighter and had a compressor to inflate tires and emergency lights and all that.  i loved it, i was driving 50 miles a day round trip to work and it was his way of saying "i want you safe".

the WORST present was from my ex MIL.  the ex took a picture of me from behind, when i was 8 months pregnant.  she bought me underwear (along with the kitchen stuff i asked for and wanted)......size 10.  granny panties.  i was livid, i only weighed 120 at that point.  (ahh, memories....)

I love gifts that are practical... I just think that if one is giving practical, which I do... that there should be something personal too.  Even a tight budget can work that in if you are creative.  I once was confined to bed being pg and couldn't shop, so I painted Christmas ornaments... the plaster kind and aged them.  They were actually very beautiful and everyone got one.  I would have loved giving more but couldn't get out.  They were a hit with everyone and they asked if I was going to do it the next year.

Phoenixpower -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 3:45:48 PM)

Last christmas my "mum"...I received an envelope with a "cat-birthday-calendar" and a "self-made-necklace" which she "bought" from my aunt...so I called her and thanked her for the "collar" for my cat (as she can't seriously expect me to wear that and at least my cat enjoyed to throw it around in my flat until it broke) which strangely she didn't quite like as my comment...and told me "I don't give you anything to xmas anymore...". So I replied "then make sure you keep your promise..."
For heavens sake, I am a few years older then 5 by now...and yes I have 3 cats, but that does not mean that I am interested in a childish kitten-birthday-calendar...never unwrapped that one out of its foil and once it comes across again its time to get it into the bin...thank goodness I am out of reach this xmas and next birthday, too...

One time when I lived in New Hampshire a buddy of mine brought over a friend of his who had a beagle puppy for me.
Not knowing anything about beagle puppies I said thanks.
Anyway it would run on the wood floors and crash into things because it couldn't get any traction.
I'd let it out and it would run around the neighborhood making all kinds of noise; "AHHHH-OOOOOOoooooo, AhhhhHHHH-OOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Everyone was complaining!
Finally after a few days a neighbor took it to a friend's house who raised beagles.
Anytime someone wants to "give" you a pet there's always a reason why.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 6:31:14 PM)

worst gifts i've received in order:

1. nothing - for 11yrs that i was married to my ex, i never received a Christmas present from him ...it's amazing how i stayed married to him that long.

2. fruitcake - yes, someone dared to pass that yucky thing off as a present which was tossed out the next day.

3. jellied fruit snacks tray - i had an elderly aunt who sent the family jellied fruit snacks trays as gifts one year ...my mother made me lie to her saying how much i appreciated her thoughtful gift. [:'(]

A pirate copy of Windows 98 SE in the Hungarian language version, but put into English packaging. Couldn't change it, uninstall it, or understand it, so ended up having to replace my hard disk.

MRandme -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 6:56:58 PM)

There was the Christmas i got a musical instrument for a gift from my (soon to be) ex husband. Mind you, i can't read sheet music and am not terribly coordinated... However, his girlfriend was a music major. Nothing like getting a gift that you know was bought with the 'other woman' in mind. Her birthday was also a week before mine and he kept getting them confused. *sigh* And, no, it was not an open marriage.

This is one of the many reasons he will soon be my ex.

Sometimes I get gifts from relatives that completely miss the mark.  You know how people like to give nice sweaters this time of year?  Well make sure that the person receiving the gift is not allergic to wool in the first place!  I have to wear a long sleeved cotton turtleneck or flannel under any type of wool.  Another poor choice in gifts for me is anything too girly, frilly and pink.  [sm=Groaner.gif]

Giving a gift is about the recipient and not the giver, so any time someone gets a bad gift, they have every right to be indignant, hurt, etc.

Anyway, the worst gift I've received would have to be hideously ugly, granny-style cotton panties. As a preteen. Mortification. A close second would be when a man sent me flowers for my birthday to my parents' house. NO. NO NO NO. I've never brought anyone home while we're in a relationship, there's a reason for that. I didn't appreciate having to explain the flowers to my extended family. And they weren't even flowers that I like. Not everyone likes red roses, guys.

At work for a present (he picked my name in a hat), these ugly brass? junky peacocks that you hang on the wall. I thanked him and didn't tell him that i hated it. I would have preferred nothing, these were so hideous. They went back from where they came..the trash..

There was one other lady in the office and she got perfume from the person that picked her name. People couldn't stand her. She got the best gift in the office. I have no idea what another female co-worker got. I think she was around at the time...

Here i was pleasant, courteous, worked hard etc. and i get peacocks. LOL
That was the worst present i ever got..

Phoenixpower -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 7:34:25 PM)

I also just remember how I received from my "lovely" colleague a carton-box to collect pictures in it (so i mean a box in the size of a shoe box...) as a gift for xmas...in return for the espresso cups she received from me from her favourite brand and for her newly mashine she just got (I do know that she was more then keen on those...) so yep, I received a "jolly-gorgeous" card-box to collect pictures in there...that went straight into the bin...(I don't mind no gifts at all...but I do mind to receive crap just out of the feeling to find "something...")

Aileen1968 -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 7:43:16 PM)

I got a snickers bar from a brother in law for my birthday one year.  Seriously.

Lashra -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 7:54:10 PM)

Long, long ago from my first boyfriend for our first xmas he bought me a pair of pink, fuzzy bedroom slippers in the wrong size. I was not thrilled with his gift to say the least, so we returned them to the store for the $12.00 he spent on them.

Yes, when giving clothing it is especially important to have items than can be exchanged with a receipt.  I swaped out some itchy sweaters and tacky jewelry one year for 2 pairs of leather boots.

peppermint -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 8:10:58 PM)

It probably is not the worst gift, but it was the most disappointing one.  I was in 5th grade and had been drooling over a lovely ballerina doll at the store.  I'd never seen a doll so lovely.  She had brown hair, brown eyes, tiara, and a white sparkly ballerina dress.  On Christmas morning there was a package just the right size.  As I tore the paper from the package I was exclaiming "Thank you, thank you" to finally tear off the final layer of paper and gaze at my new doll.  The doll had bright orange straight hair, green eyes, a pointy chin, pointy nose, and freckles.  I was rendered speechless.  Guess my parents had waited too late to try to get my dream doll.  That was the last doll I ever got.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 8:44:42 PM)

I can understand the childhood disappointments, and some of the adult ones, but some of these seem a bit nit-picky to me. (and perhaps a bit ungrateful) I'd rather receive the corny calendar, and the itchy sweaters and know my family is still here, and really mean well...
I wasn't going to tell you my very worst one, but I will:
I once dated an abusive man. We got into a knock down drag out one night, and he bloodied my nose. It was so bloodied that my favorite coat I was wearing was ruined.
Guess what he got me for Christmas?[8|]

Oh good grief blushes lets not start judging anyone........... the post is about the worst gifts..... not about how some don't value being thought of even though they were given the worst gifts.[8|]

BbwCanaDomme -> RE: Your Worst Gift (12/10/2008 11:01:01 PM)

When I was in elementary school, I really really wanted to learn to play an instrument, and I didn't specify which instrument, I just assumed that when I said instrument my parents knew I meant "flute, guitar or piano." I got an organ. And a year of organ lessons.
Once they got me this split pea soup coloured floor length fleece nitghtie with a giant snowman on it. I decided that in hopes of never getting anything like that again, I wore it to Christmas dinner at their friends house. It was pretty warm though!

Other than that, most of my gifts have been pretty fantastic. I'm from a family of shoppers though.
