I love these stories!! I have a big fat fluffy cat named Bug. He was never the brightest, but he was hit by a car several years ago and suffered some nerve damage so now his head is a little tilted to one side. He just has a pretty daft blank stare. When he eats, he likes the food to be poured right out of the bag or whatever container we have it in. He doesn't like to eat food that's been sitting in the bowl. So one day he was begging for some food even though he had a full bowl. I kept a can of dried food under the counter and the rest of it in the pantry. The can was empty and I didn't feel like refilling it, so I emptied the bowl into the can, shook it around a little, dumped it back in the bowl, and he started munching happily. I also used to have a little Yorkie with the spirit of a pitbull. She really didn't know she was a little dog. She was completely fearless. She loved to squeeze through and open door and run down the sidewalk with the kids chasing her and yelling. It was her favorite game. We had to go hunt her down many many times. I didn't know the extent of her wanderings for some time though. We lived in a typical suburban home with a fenced back yard, and each day we'd put her outside before we left for work. When we got home, we'd let her back in, feed her etc.... All was normal, right? Well one day I was out walking her and a woman walking toward me stopped and said "Oh, is she your dog?" "Yes", I replied, wondering who this woman was, and how she knew my dog. "She comes to visit us every day". "huh?" Well it turns out my little yorkie was slipping through a hole in the fence and going a visiting in the neighborhood. She would go down to this neighbors house and run up and down her fence playing with her dog every day, then come back home, slip back in the fence and be there when we got home. This same dog didn't always make it back home. We had to pick her up from neighbors houses several times when she disappeared and we had to hunt her down. One of the funniest times was in a neighborhood in Arizona. We thought she was past the age of running off, but managed to slip away from us one afternoon. We called the local radio station that helped the locals keep up with missing pets and found that she had been located. We walked down the street to retrieve her and found out that she had been picked up by two elderly ladies at the end of the block. They fell in love with her right away but couldn't decide which of them should keep her. They decided that if her owner didn't show up that they would share her! She always came back all shampood and brushed-everyone who retrieved her always loved her to pieces-she was adorable. We now have a young cat in our household that is really athletic and active and does some pretty strange things. He has a fascination with beans and grains in bags. One day I came home from a local heathfood store with bags of flax seed, quinoa, oats etc... I had about a half pound each in these bags. I put the sack on the table while I was putting away other stuff. I heard him digging around in the bags and I looked and he had one of the bags of flaxseed and was dragging it across the floor. Then another time I was cooking some soup or something and I got all the ingredients out of the pantry, including a bag of dried lentils. I got all the other ingredients cut up and had them cooking and did some other housework for a while. When it came time to add the lentils they were nowhere to be found. I was certain I'd put them out, but I checked the pantry again, just to be sure. No lentils. I looked around in the kitchen everywhere, no lentils. sigh. Finally as a last resort, I checked my daughters room where the cat (Peter) has his little house and bed and sure enough, there were my lentils scattered all over her floor. Oh one of the funniest things I ever saw a cat do was a kitten named Siren. She was bit of a nervous cat, kind of high strung. One of those that's somewhat close to being feral. I don't quite remember how it happened, but somehow she was playing with a gumdrop. At some point, she bit it and sunk her fang right into the middle of it. Well the thing stuck to her fang and wouldn't come off. She started flipping out! She was jumping all over the place, whirling around, flopping on the ground and batting at it until finally it came off. I laughed til I cried. My parents have a cat named Shadow that has a real mischevious streak. We lived with my parents for a while and when we did, my cat Bug was with us. He was sleeping on a low box against the wall one afternoon. I was at the kitchen table chatting with my Mom and saw Shadow kind of slowly saunter over to where Bug was sleeping. She kind of looked around nonchalantly and really looked like she was just strolling by. As she got closer, out of the blue, she reared up and BAM BAM BAM, she boxed his ears and then just sauntered off like nothing had happened. Bug didn't know what hit him, poor guy. Shadow has some other odd habits. Whenever anyone in the house sneezes, she starts to meow. She also meows when the dogs are at the backdoor and want to come inside. There they are with cold noses pressed to the glass and she's inside meowing to let us know they want in. It's very cute. Also, every morning and evening, my parents have a ritual of giving snacks to all the animals. When my Mom announces snack time. Shadow starts to meow and rounds up all the other animals in the house and then leads them all down the hall to where the snacks are. Oh and back to the Yorkie. I guess this isn't so much a funny pet story, but a funny people story. One time we'd taken the whole family for a picnic at the river when we lived in Sedona. There is an area there where the rocks are covered with a slippery moss and it's a great place to swim and let the kids slide around on the rocks. Well we'd picked our way across and found a nice place on the other side in the shade to picnic while the kids played. Now these rocks were so slippery that once you slid through the water it was tough to even turn yourself over, there was absolutely NO traction. Well after a couple of hours we decided to head back. I gathered up the blanket and towels and we all had armfuls of stuff to take back to the car. I grabbed the dogs leash and we started back across the rocks. We were almost across and DeeDee, slipped off the rock into deeper water. I pulled on the leash to pull her back up on the rock and when I did I lost my balance. I slipped sideways, fell into my daughter, who fell into my husband, who grabbed hold of my son and drug him down too. There we were, the whole family, floundering around in the water, slipping and sliding, grabbing our gear and finally slogging out of the water. A fine family moment.
