Sunnyfey -> Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 5:50:38 AM)

Sir bought me a straight razor. HE wants me to eventually learn how to give him a good old time barber shop shave.
You know, the warm lather, hot towels, close shave, maybe a bit of a neck massage.

How the hell do I even go about learning that? Its a STRAIGHT RAZOR. its a really big knife on the end of a foldy sticky handle thing.

It scares the piss out of me. Like....seriously, scares the crap out of me. THAT'S HIS JUGULAR. I"d like it to stay where it is thank you......

ZapRobo -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 5:57:44 AM)

I heard that one training method is a balloon. If you can remove the shaving foam from a balloon without popping it... well that's pretty much the trick. All in the angles, apparently...

Sunnyfey -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 6:03:56 AM)

thats an idea i suppose

Sunnyfey -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 6:05:29 AM)

LMAO I could open my own subby barber shop, with hot chicks like in hooters giving old fashioned shave and a hair cut, boot blacking, like those old nice barber shops....that sounds kind of hot o.0

CatdeMedici -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 6:39:12 AM)

Find an old time barber, many of them have taught more than a few willing ladies how to accomplish it and its fun to spend a few days in a barber shop!

Wow, very trusting, at one time a certain King's most trusted advisor was his barber, when asked why, the king replied his barber had a blade to his throat every day.

I use a straight razor and it took me a while to get the hang of it, but the most important thing I learned was how to get the thing prepared for the shave, it and the skin, as there is a definite way of doing it, without which not only is the shave unsatisfactory, it is uncomfortable and and the blade not appearing to shave, more pressure is applied which can lead to cuts. I don't wish to scare you, but I grew my beard to allow some of the teething scars to heal.

Wet shaving with a blade is an art, and a worthwhile art to learn, as the saying is true, nothing comes closer, not only that but it successfully exfoliates the skin, removing all dead skin in the process.

But now my beard has gone, for xmas at least and I am back to the straight razor and though it takes time to shave, what a shave, I missed that in my fungus mode. The scars I had, well, they are gone, dabbing with ''BioOil'' as ever sorted them out.

But how to do it, well youtube is a good source of videos on the subject, also is the ''straight razor forums'', but I will link ''Expert Village'' instruction videos here, which you can follow if you wish, after that, learn how to prepare the razor and the skin. This part, though there is online tuition available, I would if I were you, go and seek the services from an old fashioned barber, get them to teach you how to wet shave another.

Have fun  [sm=evil.gif]

Edited to add, a pretty good video on how to prepare the razor, skin and later if you follow the video, how to do it ;

wow that just reminded me that Grandad had a cut throat razor (as they were known). He used to clean it after each shaving swipe on a leather strap.
Maybe that's where i got both a love for razors and leather straps from......

:-) Sweeney Todd anyone?????

SlaveIndigochild -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 4:21:18 PM)

It's an interesting task ro be asked to do though, seriously, on many levels. It's an opportunity to experience the sort of self-control and skill a dominant would need when using blades. it's also a sublime opportunity to learn the patience and skill of service. On another level it's like being taught a great del about the control and self-belief a Master has. i think it's a brilliant task to be set.

Get lots of alum, and read this: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/11/fashion/11skin.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=razor&st=cse

SlaveIndigochild -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 4:35:35 PM)

But then most have experience of using razors whicheber side of the whip they are on and of whichever gender surely?...shaving legs, arm pits and pubic areas. i mean one can do oneself just as much damage with a normal razor surely? Many of the students i know who self harm do so with razors for example....

I have used a straight, Cut Throat as we call them here because of the Razor Gangs during the '20s and '30s in Melbourne), since I went to boarding school. My father and Grand father both instructed me in the art of shaving with such a delicate and well balanced instrument and yes I had so shave off the lather of an inflated balloon. My Graduation was to shave both these august gentlemen without drawing blood..

As I have so often posted, I shave the pubic hair of my females using my cut-throat razor and I do not, even at the ripe young age of 63, draw blood unintentionally. Ohh and yes it does cut throats most excellently literally from ear to ear. Not bad for removing testes and a penis too

Now, how did I know that was coming? :)

I like the idea of a straight razor though. Never had it, but one day...

pompeii -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 10:45:44 PM)

As always, liquids help ... for multiple purposes ...

In Cut Throat 101, we learn that the first step to a good straight-razor shave is removing the oily secretions from the subcutaneous selacious glands covering the outer cuticle so that water can penetrate to the pigmented cortex surrounding the medulla. Saturation lowers hair's tensile strength by 1/3 to 1/2 (dry beard hair has a tensile strength similar to that of copper wire!).

We also learn that applying a lubricant to the skin improves shaving force by reducing friction. A professional lubricant is polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) but your basic baby oil works almost as well to lower friction and allow more cutting force to be applied to the forest of hair on your cheeks.

Some recommend a triple layer of liquids, e.g., Musgo Real preshave oil, Sharps Kid Glove Shave Gel from a tube, and finally, a layer of warm shaving soap applied with a badger-hair brush swishing around the bowl to a good lather.

Oh, and some alum powder or an alum-based styptic pencil to stem the inevitable tide of blood.

leakylee -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 11:42:33 PM)

oh hell talk about scarey!! this is one of those things that was getting demoed this weekend. i think i was one of the few idiots that wanted to give a whirl. heart pounding as the demo dolly is the head of family, and then nicking an ear while doing a head.

luckily our resident expert was taught by one of the local Old Gaurd Leather Dominants. he has the patience of a saint, but still it was soo scarey.

it was really cool, bonding and all that, but i strongly suggest finding someone that knows and has a passion for it. i know i wanna do more. hopefully i will take less skin as i go along..hehe..

good luck,
smooches
lee

BKSir -> RE: Straight Razor shaving (12/14/2008 11:52:39 PM)

heh, I was lucky.  Grandpa taught me how to shave, and he taught with one of those.  I still have one.  He was a bit harsh with his teaching though.  Instead of practicing on a balloon or anything, it was "Here ya go, watch me and try."  I guess that's incentive to not slip.  Then again, he taught me that "If your hands are shaky today, well, shave tomorrow." ;)
