ShiftedJewel -> RE: oh goody, it's Christmas........ (12/15/2008 7:06:44 AM)

I love the winter time. And I'm absolutely terrible at Christmas time!! To this day I tell my grown kids that whoever doesn't believe in Santa Claus gets granny panties for Christmas!! This year has been really rough on a lot of people, we're fortunate that the failing economy hasn't affected us. One neighbor is spending her first Christmas single, just her and the sapling, so we're including her in ours and twice has been shopping now for a few months so she can play Santa on Christmas morning for them... she's gonna sneak in early in the morning and put gifts under their tree (She has a house key). And my daughters partner lost her job a few months ago so we've stepped in to play Santa there as well. On Christmas Eve we'll have the neighborhood Christmas party here. It's become a tradition because so many of the neighbors are alone for the holidays and no one goes home empty handed. This year we're doing the "home made" thing. All the ladies in the neighborhood (Ok, my whole street is pretty much nothing but single females) will be getting home made flannel nightgowns.

I don't really get into Christmas so much for me... but I love making other peoples holidays wonderful, I love seeing them smile and laugh and it's worth it's weight in gold to see that veil of loneliness lift for that little bit of time... you know?

I'm not posting this to pat us on the back, but I'm kind of hoping that others will discover the Christmas spirit in the same way.

The stress and hype of Christmas Commerce has taken it's toll.

I find Myself wishing it were Dec 26th and wanting Christmas to be over and done with.

I'm not a 'bah humbug' sort, I have enjoyed some wonderful Christmas memories and have always held to the belief that the Holidays are what you make of them.

This year, though, I'm completely devoid of that old fashioned Christmas Spirit.  I don't have the interest, or the energy, to even tie a bow.  I am looking forward to cooking on Christmas day, but beyond that I can't wait for the season to be over.

And as far as WIITWD is concerned, I don't have the energy to hold a whip.

I wish I could fly away to a warm tropical beach and tie a red ribbon on a palm tree, swing in a hammock and watch the surf roll in.

Any other Dommes out there feeling a little disconnected this year?

This year I am struggling. I am beginning to hate cold weather, snow and the worst is the ice we keep getting. I want it to GO AWAY.

I've never been particularly thrilled about Christmas, Thanksgiving is where it's at for me, but I do love giving gifts. This year, I can't get excited even about that. No tree, no lights, just bleh. Fortunately there is no big gathering at the farm this year, we are traveling to my son's for the day.

Just call me Grumpy.

Mostly I'm stressed about the job search. I have one first round interview set up thus far compared to five this time last year. It is not a good year on the academic job market but a few of the jobs are not "closed" and doing first round interviews until the New Year so there is still hope. At the end I only need one job after all but it's hard not to feel depressed.

Our Christmas party, buying gifts, and attending other parties are small lights I can hang on to right now when I start feeling depressed.

Fabulous, LeeAnn!!  [:D]

sirsholly -> RE: oh goody, it's Christmas........ (12/15/2008 2:17:57 PM)

a question...who is the stupid son-of-a-bitch that decided gifts had to be wrapped?

Now seriously...the tradition of gift giving goes back to the three wise-men...all came a totin' gifts. Fine and dandy. But do you think any one of them bothered to gift wrap the gold, frankinsence and muir? I seriously doubt it. Can you imagine what a long camel ride would do to a bow? Especially if you get stuck riding the hump.

Just a thought.

LaTigresse -> RE: oh goody, it's Christmas........ (12/15/2008 2:23:16 PM)

I saw it in a catalogue a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was fun. Then, after I found out via my adult children that the family gathering is going to be at my son's house I decided to forgo putting up the big tree. The guyyyyy in the house did a half ass whine, then, "ohhh, that means I don't have to do any extra work.......so yeah!!!" He loves Charlie Brown so I remembered that tree. I've searched high and low online to find it (because the catalogue disappeared) so I ordered it yesterday. I am going to sneak it into the house and set it in the centre of the dining room table under the hanging stained glass chandelier with a, badly wrapped, little gift under it. I cannot wait to see the look on his face.

I'm just grateful for the invention of the gift bag!  Sooooo much easier.

sirsholly -> RE: oh goody, it's Christmas........ (12/15/2008 2:29:25 PM)

remember when you could buy the pre-cut sheets of wrapping paper that perfectly fit a shirt box? I used to cram everything into shirt boxes!!  Now the only way to buy it is on a roll that will not stop curling up as you try to cut it.

LaTigresse -> RE: oh goody, it's Christmas........ (12/15/2008 2:34:27 PM)

I love those darn shirt boxes. I remember one year I got a little carried away. Under the tree looked like an identical pile (except for various wrappings and bows) of boxes. It really was pretty funny.

Then there was the year I waited until Christmas Eve to wrap presents. I was tippling the wine and still smoked cigarettes so my nose was not exactly as good as it is now. I was halfway through the process when I noticed a faint aroma of cat piss. The cat had climbed into the box of wrapping paper and stuff and used it in lieu of a litterbox. 11:00pm on Christmas Eve with cat piss wrapping paper. I used brown kraft paper and assorted markers to make my own. AFTER unwrapping all that were previously wrapped!

ShiftedJewel -> RE: oh goody, it's Christmas........ (12/16/2008 4:34:48 AM)

Just a quick hijack here...

We're gonna go cut our tree today!!!

See, it's cool to me because for the last 4 or 5 years we've had a fake tree. Well, I wanted a real tree this year but hubby said the fake one was just fine. So, I can't remember which thread it was in, but we (twice and I) were discussing something and the subject came up about the tree. I said, in the thread, that I really didn't want a fake tree again this year and if it meant breaking the tree so hubby would let us get rid of it then that's what I would do. Surprisingly enough, he read the thread and told me not to break the tree, to go ahead and find a good home for it!! YAY!! We did, my neighbor is a minister so we gave it to her church. And now I get my real tree again!!

I will be buying my real fir tree this evening, I LOVE christmas.

More of a challenge to multi-task and juggle more things "to do". I love the time with the family, buying presents, giving presents, the long deserved rest, and most of all the over-indulgent eating & drinking [:D]

The UK is rather cold at present, we have had snow already, so here's hoping for a snowy christmas!

I will be attending a caberet dinner and dance on friday evening with vanilla friends, The Rat Pack tribute band, and a lovely banquet, and dance cant wait!

Merry Christmas & Season Greetings to you all :)

You just described my typical mood for this time of the year.  Just add in some cabana boys and girls serving tropical cocktails with little umbrellas in them and scuba and snorkling adventures and it's all good.

And cloth bags are the bomb. They can be reused, so can those pretty gift boxes. Buy once, use forever, no trees.
