the media and the superficial differences.

Yep Japan sure does, and one party has dominated politics since 1955.  The Liberal Democratic Party has all the power.  Only once has that trend been upset, and that was only when other parties banded together.  It didn't last but a few years, because they all started fighting with each other.  I'm not saying the two-party system is perfect, but it works better than multi-party systems IMHO.  Two party systems lend themselves to more stability.

bestbabync -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 8:26:17 PM)

the proof is right before us.  the issues you listed, tax cuts will not be repealed, war in iraq will continue, centrist cabinet appointments, more bailouts and the recycled clintonites.  same ole same ole.  4 more years of the past eight years.  what happened to the "change we can believe in"?

not to be a bore, but didn't our capitalist, two party system just cause another economic meltdown(a once per decade thing now)?  or is that a thread hijack?

If you don't like it, than vote out the incumbents.  If you don't see one you like.....RUN FOR OFFICE.

You're right that there is very little difference between the parties.  It's supposed to be that way.  Our forefathers knew what they were doing.  You are never going to get 300 million people to agree on everything.  If they hadn't passed the bailouts, than other people would have raised Hell.

I have news for you, PEOPLE KNOW THAT THIRD PARTIES EXIST.  The information is out there.  It's readily avaliable, but yet people still don't vote for them.  Calls for a 2nd Constitutional Convention, a rebellion, blah, blah are not new.  People have been screaming for those things since this country was founded.  Your ideas won't get rid of any corruption or liars.  It will just create new liars and thieves.

[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m20.gif[/image]  how much more can this country take?  should we sit idlly by until we have no freedom, no liberty?  between the pubs and the dems they have slowly but surely chipped away at our constitutional rights.  soon they will tax and control our sex lives! [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m28.gif[/image]

did anyone hear about NY state wanting to raise taxes on high calorie food & drink?  geeeez!

1- no its not
2- not as readily available as the 600 news, or the debates, or cnn
3- therein lies the problem... power does corrupt...

No it didn't, and you're assumptions are wrong.  We don't have a "economic meltdown" every decade.  We have cyclical recessions, and occasionally some of them are worse than others.  You can lay the blame for the most recent one at the feet of a lot of folks.  Economics is not that simple, and I am not going to debate it in this thread.

i do vote!  my ideas that you refer to are more than that!  i believe in the constitution as it was written.

PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THIRD PARTIES EXIST.  HELL THEY DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY VOTED FOR OBAMA, SO HOW CAN THEY KNOW OF THIRD PARTIES.  PEOPLE ONLY KNOW WHAT THE MEDIA WANTS THEM TO KNOW!

like i said, sorry for the hijack.  but our modern system is flawed- and thats why the peaks and lows are so pronounced... maybe another time... but you can't deny our presidential leadership has been centrist for a long time... and really, so is the congress.

What would it need to create a third party in US politics? One that actually stood a chance of holding some power. What kind of thing would be in its manifesto? Is there room in the US political spectrum?

"Third parties are like bees--once they sting, they die."

Third parties exist in this country, but they function as an "advance guard" for ideas that ultimately get subsumed by one or the other of the two major parties, as either the Democrats or Republicans will co-opt ideas, policies, and programs of third parties that gain traction with the broader electorate.

i think ive said my piece, so ill leave with this-  without struggle there is no progress

Aynne88 -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 9:52:51 PM)

Thanks Rachel, I am well versed in literature, 1984 is great, but I prefer Animal Farm. Orwell is of course brilliant. I was making a play on your comment. By the way, it is only democrat when referring to an individual, it is always "democratic" when referring to the party. Lastly, I don't drink koolaid. I will be drinking a cheeky little Vueve Cliquot on  on 1/20/09 though. I will toast to your being enlightened. If you think that these huge corporations that touch aspects of most americans with any credit and/or investments, etc. don't affect the "public" you are uninformed.  Unless of course you want to go all Ruby Ridge or something? That ended well for them.[8|]

first, what i posted is what Obama has said, like how he will leave in the bush tax cut, and how private buisness needs a public bailout.   second, 1984 is a book.  third, i dont drink democrat koolaid.   but help yourself.

Baby what kind of idiots do you spend time with? Everyone knows there are third party candidates, we just know it is akin to throwing our vote out the window. Oh well that and they suck 99.9% of the time. Maybe you should turn off the television and read? Obviously the "media" is an evil liberal plot to suck your brain stem out. Lord....[8|]

bestbabync -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/16/2008 5:45:35 AM)
