If you challenge them you always have more coming at you. They were very forceful and tried to be intimidating.

It sounds a lot more like a cult than a religion. Er....wait a minute....I guess that MOST organized religions are really a lot like cults when I think about it.

When I asked about the church status... I was told they went with it being religion so they could be tax exempt. I didn't like them from the personality test and wanted to walk away, but my husband wanted to get into it. He learned to trust me much more after that one! lol They monitor the doors too... you go in and someone is standing there to greet you and lead you. So if you want to leave... they are right there and that is why I didn't get out the door. They will kindly take you by the arm, talking in your face and lead you to the people who try to convince you of not leaving and then if you still want to leave, they use the threats. (Just my experience with them)

I'm an atheist, and I couldn't disagree more with this sweeping statement. I've been to Presbyterian churches, Methodist churches, Unitarian churches, Episcopalian churches, Catholic churches, Baptist churches, Jewish synagogues... and none has ever browbeat me into joining, or blocked the doors if I tried to leave, or made me talk to someone else before I could leave.

they try to recruit people on the streets of london, particularly in covent garden market. This perky young girlie joined my table when I was having coffee alone and tried to talk me into taking the personality test. I told her I would, if I could get an entire back catalogue of their founder's scifi library When that wasn't enough to see her off, I added that I thought Isaac Asimov was an AWESOME writer and that any religion he founded couldn't be wrong. Unlike L Ron Hubbard, who was a semi-literate prick. That worked. [8\|]

Asimov started a religion? I want to sign up! [:D] I'm surprised she knew who L. Ron was. Do they still revere that chain-smoking misogynist jerk? IIRC, L. Ron is one of the few authors who sold more books after he died than before. Hordes of Scientologists were told to buy his books to get them on the best seller lists. Then a month or so later there'd be stacks of them at used book stores.

Asimov is a god - the robot books can still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! And I'm guessing L Ron's little followers didn't have wobbly tables or open fires....or those secondhand bookshops would be far less full of third-rate fiction!

There was a really famous documentory on scientology in Britain a few yers ago, the journalist himself got visably angry upset and threatened by certain leaders to discredit him and keep the 'religion' secret.

The thing is, there are some very sharp, effective elements to Dianetics, the psychological tenets of Scientology. This is how they have been so effective in using their understanding to ill ends, by using them to control and manipulate an extensive cult, successfully. Does anyone else remember seeing a documentary on TV, years ago, investigating people who had left Scientology and were being seriously persecuted by them? It was a very credible report - was it Frontline or Bill Moyer's Journal or another reputable source? By the way, when you ask, 'what is Scientology?', what they used to stress was that they were a science, not a religion. But they found that they could not claim, legally, to be licensed therapists, and of course, being deemed a religion offers so much protection for a myriad of ills, plus a tax break.

i think what bothers me the most about scientology.....is that if some random person treated you like this or brainwashed people as some of you are saying (that isnt me doubting it, i do believe you!) no one would have issue with reporting them to the police. but since its a CHURCH, they can claim religious freedom. that is truly disturbing. kitten
