Good. I have no qualms with  your understanding of me. Just for you, here is a little insight into my WalMart issue.
Shop away.

Agrees. WalMart is a dirty soulless corporate whore. Seriously. That place just sucks.  I won't shop there.

I'll never understand why people hate walmart.

do you not like a dirty soulless corporation that employs over 2 million individuals (many of whom would have a hard time finding employment/income without walmart)? do you not like a dirty soulless corporation that enables poor families to acquire products that heighten the quality of their lives in a way that is not possible without walmart?

and what corporations have souls?

I'll never understand you people.

Thanks, I put a bookmark to that site in my Politics folder.

It's almost comical, the evident complete inability of some people to make the very simple connection that buying Chinese crap equals no decent-paying jobs for them. Then they come on boards like this and piss and moan about how absolutely terrible life is because they can only find a job flipping burgers at 7 bucks an hour. Well, no shit. Then some of those very same people vote for the party that has allowed all the manufacturing jobs to be sent to Malaysia and Viet Nam, and the party that is actively trying to bust unions and get rid of minimum wage laws.

"Well, sure I'd like to make 20 bucks an hour. But unions are evil and besides gays shouldn't be able to marry or have abortions. Guns sure are expensive nowadays, huh? Well, see you down at the gun show at the church. It's potluck. Kraft mac and cheese, Ramen, and roadkill."

HK? You made my night!
Let's see I have no job {sometimes because I have no Union}, I don't make shit {also because I have no Union}, but I hate Unions!
I especially hate those people that have Unions that make sure they have great job security, great benefits and great pay!
As bad as the economy is right now? I am starting to love my Union.

LMAO

Sooner or later Americans are going to have to acknowledge that we are in a global economy.  Those jobs are part of the world we all live in.  And the sooned you and so many others realize it and get with the program, the better.

manxcat

Manx, and therein lies the problem!
I can't, for the life of me *ever remember* voting for any type of "global economy!"
*This was all started by big business and people in our government exclusively!*
Not The People.
There was no vote, there was no consultation, no feedback, no nothing!
Our government is supposed to act with our permission.
Did anyone hear The People crying out for a "global economy?"
Ever?
Yahoo News yesterday had a big article and pictures about S.Korea and a "free trade" Bill which many of them don't want with,............the U.S.!
Has anyone in here or any of your friends or family petitioned our congress for a "free trade" Bill with,........S. Korea?
Yesterday is the first time I've ever heard of this!
My congressman and senators have not, as of yet consulted with any of us constituents about any "free trade" Bill with S. Korea!
I'll be calling them this afternoon and asking them what the hell is going on.
And everyone else should be doing that too.
Our govt. evidently certainly in cahoots with big business is doing this *without* the permission of The People!

What a wonderful insightful post!
I agree that many of us never voted for all this "free trade" in the so very wonderful

and succesful "global economy" that we now live in.
[;)]
One of the problems is, many never realized the potential problems, but we are
dealing with many of them now, aren't we?
I always felt something was very wrong 20-25 years ago, when so many American companies
closed down HERE, and  ran over to developing and 3rd world countries where they could
pay people $5 a day, and then ship many of the products back to America for Americans to buy??
What was wrong with that fucking picture?

I always wondered why so many American "joe workingclass" did not have a problem with that.
We have outsourced our own damn country, now we wonder where the fucking jobs are?
well duh?

It's not as black and white as you believe. No, it isn't a zero-sum game, but also humans do not exhibit rational economic behavior, as postulated by classical economics. People won't go to Walmart because Main Street has 1)inferior quality, or 2) inferior service, or 3) an inferior price. They may go for reasons entirely unrelated to those factors; i.e., social pressure to shop at WalMart, or a relative works there, or they meet friends there.

People don't go to walmart because of the low prices ? What the hell are you drinking in your picture and why aren't you sharing.

Well gee BlackPhx,I called my congressman's office in D.C. this afternoon to ask about what is going on with this "free trade" agreement with S. Korea and the staffer told me that she didn't know anything about it!
A U.S. Congressman's staffer and *she* doesn't know anything about it!
I haven't had anyone ringing my doorbell asking me to sign a petition to have "free trade" with .....S. Korea.
And, I didn't vote for any of the things you mentioned either!
Where did you vote?
NONE of those things were on any ballots that I saw when I voted!
It seems that they're doing a bunch of things in Washington and The People be damned.
Does anyone know what the fuck is going on up in Washington?
I mean who's managing the country, Bernie Medoff? I'm not making any money off of any of the above nor am I "benefiting" from any of them.

Dude, have you been watching the news about this issue ? There's been fistfights, barricades and all kinds of other semi-serious violence in the south korean legislative building over that issue. Not unlike the American congress back when our representatives gave a damn about what they were doing.

Be happy, your congress critter didn't lie to you. No one honest has the slightest clue what the hell is going to happen with that treaty.

jlf1961 -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/20/2008 1:24:36 AM)

hey people, you ever wonder why WAL MART has such good prices?

Its simple, they tell suppliers what they will pay per item, the supplier builds down to that price.

You will see an identical looking price somewhere else, but the model number will be slightly different.

Which means, some metal parts are plastic in the walmart item etc.

Exactly right! Thank you! Wallyworld tells their suppliers exactly how much they will pay for a widget, and also tell the widget supplier how much they need to pay their labor, what kinds of dormitories the labor needs to live in, how many hours per week workers have to work, where they can shop, who they can marry, you name it.  Wallyworld contols the entire manufacturing-marketing chain. They are VERTICALLY integrated.

For every piece of cheap-assed shit you "frugal shoppers" buy, you are helping Wallyworld consolidate its hold on labor through the collusion of all these wonderful "Free-Market" (hahahaha) Asian nations.

One: you apparently misread what I wrote.
Two: I am drinking a glass of 1996 Leoville-Barton Bordeaux during my 50th birthday dinner at Offenbach-Steuben, Prenzlauer-Berg, Berlin, an old E Berlin celebrity hangout. The entree was roast duck, the appetizer was Pfefferlingen (Chanterelles), and the dessert was Sachertorte.

We are in a trend to do things like the old OLD timers did.  What hints do you have?

Ill tell you what.. make this interesting.  I challenge you to save me money.     Take the challenge.    :-)

It really isn't that difficult.

Don't waste electricity or water.
Don't buy useless stuff you don't need that you'll use a few times before discarding.
When you go shopping for food, get enough to keep you going for a few days and don't waste any of it.
If you can't pay with cash, you can't afford it.
Live to a budget - cover the necessities first and foremost.
At Christmas, don't go mad with presents - the idea is a gift, not a competition on spending the most money.

It shouldn't take a recession to instill these principles.

In terms of the 'old timers' comment, it remains commonplace for the people of North East England to grow their own veg and keep their own hens etc - recession or no recession.

Ari, that's my point, the first that I've heard of this was on YahooNews the other day!
Why hasn't *Our Government* consulted with The American People about this?
When I was growing up in Boston, Mass in the 50's and 60's my parents and all voters would get newsletters and questionaires from the congressman and senators offices asking their opinions on things and asking what they'd like to see done about certain things.
My neighbors and I don't need or want any type of "free trade" Bill with S. Korea!
Who came up with that lame idea in the first place?
And why aren't they informing The People about it?
Does anyone in this site even know any of the details of this without "googling" it?
I mean call me "Olde Fashioned" but shouldn't The People in this country be *informed* by *our government* before anything like this is brought up?
It was the same with those "free trade" Bills with Vietnam and "Cafta" too!
You'd be lucky to hear a blurb on the News about them and the next thing you know they're voting on them with *no feedback* from The People!
I'm not out here to "listen" to my government!
They're in Washington to *listen* to ME!
