does the recount seem a little bit suspicious to anyone else?

Not at all, and I live here.  No matter who wins, no one has any reason to bitch (not that they won't, it will just be pointless whining rather than a substantive complaint).  There have been representatives from both campaigns looking at every single ballot.  Lawyers for the campaigns and the press have been present at every county elections office throughout the entire recount.  There has been an incredible amount of transparency around the process.  Everyone involved is taking their responsibility very seriously.

Some are claiming that it's stacked against Norm Coleman because his arguments about the 133 lost ballots and the improperly rejected absentee ballots did not prevail.  The reason that he didn't prevail is that the priority in MN law is that every legal ballot is counted.  As a citizen of MN, I feel really good about that.  I'd be kind of pissed off if they found out they made a mistake in rejecting my ballot but still didn't count it, and I'll bet you would be, too.  It's good that Coleman raised the challenges and that these issues were resolved.  In future recounts we'll have a clearer process from the start.

Why would anybody try to poison straw people with anthrax? That doesn't make any sense.

Not that martin didn't have his problems, but Chambliss is a dirtbag from the get-go. I regret I was in the ER getting an antibiotic IV infusion on the 2nd.

It was East Cobb that elected that bat-guano-snorter. I live in E. Cobb, and I know exactly who and what my "neighbors" are. These people can leave the most uplifting sermon about taking care of the least of these, and drive right by a destitute mother and her kids because they are, after all, welfare scum leeches on the dole.

If anyone wants to know where I developed my "attitude" about white protestant republicans, it is here, in zip 30068. They deserve anthrax.

So why do you live there? Sell your house and move over to Franklin Road where you won't feel like such an outcast.

I would love to see some liberals (with some balls) go after their opponents w/ death rays, the way republicans do.No holds barred and with no apologies.

They're out there, unfortunately.  "Death rays" make me think of this - "If you can't answer a man's argument, all is not lost; you can still call him vile names." - Elbert Hubbard   When I see a partisan attack from either side (or stinkbombs tossed in from outsiders), I always assume that the person making the attack is at least irrational concerning the issue at hand and may be an idiot generally.  I particularly dislike it when someone whose stand on an issue I basically agree with goes into attack mode.  I think that attacking one's opponent makes a good argument look weak and a questionable argument look ridiculous.  If all or most of what I have to say is "They suck!", I'll embarrass the thoughtful folks on my own side of the issue and I'll give the screamers on the other side an easy target.  I may be able to convince someone that They do indeed suck, but I'll likely convince them that We're not much better.

I'd love to see the rational folks tell the screamers in their own fold to pipe down and let the grown-ups do the talking for a while.  We've got a lot of issues to work on and we're not going to make progress with any of them if we line up on opposite sides of a wall and lob manure at one another.

There are some folks who are shunning the screaming and starting a dialog.  I heard about a group of pro-lifers and pro-choicers who've decided that their disagreement on abortion shouldn't prevent them from working together on issues both groups feel are important - like decreasing the number of unwanted pregnancies and making sure that once they're born, babies get what they need.  If we can work together on stuff we agree about, it makes it easier to discuss stuff that we disagree about.

That's why the Rev. Rick Warren thing seems kind of surreal to me.  He's become a much more controversial figure recently because he's decided to shift his focus to less controversial issues.  He and Obama are both getting beat up because they're talking to each other rather than vilifying each other.  How sad is that.

The Franken-Coleman race really doesn't matter and hasn't mattered since Saxby Chambliss trounced Jim Martin the the runoff in Georgia. That was the GOP's 41st seat.

Yeah-ha....

Now "Saxby" claims to be the future of the GOP....

Please make is so ,God.Please please......

Him and Sarah,please please.

Lol

Franken,the icing on the cake.Yummy...

For the GOP? Crow.

As has been pointed out before, having 60 Democratic Senators (or Democratic-caucusing) is overrated.  The 56 Democrats (plus the two independents) don't vote in lockstep, nor do the 41 Republicans.  However, in this session it will be more difficult for the GOP to block legislation coming to the floor via filibuster.

And damned impossible in 2010, when the Dems pick up 3-5 more seats (no gains for the GOP), bringing the total to 62-64.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  Can't wait for Bill O"Reilly to choke on the phrase "Senator Franken".  If, that is, he can bring himself to be enough of an American to respect the office.  Which I doubt.

Palin/Chambliss in 2012!

I don't remember him on SNL that much. I never thought he was funny. It has nothing to do with politics; he just plain sucks. I don't care who Minnesota puts in office, but Al Franken is not talented and never was. Air America? Didn't they declare bankruptcy? Again.....Al Franken sucks.

As much as I try to remember him on SNL, I cannot.  He did not make an impression

It's incomprehensible that you could have seen Al Franken on SNL and not remember it. He was hilarious, and his self-contained remote satellite reporter skit was unforgettable. Original, creative, unique.

OK, could someone please explain to us what a "progressive" is?
And maybe just "who" in public life would be considered a "progressive?

MarsBonfire -> RE: Al Franken takes lead in Minn. Senate Race...Go Al!! (12/21/2008 10:44:37 AM)

Progressive: The ideological opposite of "Conservative." People who are willing to try new ideas and promote equality and justice.

Conservative: rat bastards who like killing, lying, wiretapping, torture.

This is only a slight overstatement of the facts.

See? That wasn't so difficult was it?
I agree, we do need some "new ideas".
Now,..."promoting equality and justice" to me is static i.e. that should be a constant.
But, there is a caveat with that "new ideas" thing, you want to be sure that the "new ideas" are truly,...new and not just re-hashed "old ideas" right?
OK, and this begs the obvious question, what "new ideas" does Al Franken have that could be considered,..."progressive?"

subrob1967 -> RE: Al Franken takes lead in Minn. Senate Race...Go Al!! (12/21/2008 11:49:32 AM)

I always knew Congress was a joke, and Franken getting elected just proves it.

You gotta love Minnesota thou, first they elect a Crossdressing "Pro" Wrestler as Governor, and now an unfunny "Comedian" as a Senator. Must be something in the water, or their brains freeze up dere in Janurary.

Pretty close. Actually, the ideological opposite of progressive is reactionary.

So you agree the Democrats are not progressive.  They want neither equality nor justice--hence their policies of bigotry, discrimination, hatred, and divisiveness.

You mean the comedian who's written several best-selling books on politics, exposing talk radio's and FoxNews' lies and pandering to the right, and the evil deeds of the Bush administration, plus hosted a popular left-wing program discussing political matters on a daily basis, and decried predatory lending years before it became a hot topic?

That comedian?

Yes, clearly he has no business being in the Senate. [8|]

Cagey, there seem to be many who have a problem with refering to Al Franken as a, "comedian."
Oh, and are you saying that Al Franken "singlehandedly" exposed lies in the media?
Specifically in "talk radio" and Fox News?
No-one else waas involved?
Talk radio comprises 100's of stations Nationwide.
Which shows are you talking about?
As for Fox News he may have caught a few "lies" but did he catch any on other Networks as well?
