Westside,
I have, and also just returned from Folsom where I attended 2 seminars on the subject. Actually getting quite good - just not perfect. It could be a very dangerous toy. We purchased a very good whip but it's long for a rookie to handle. But it's been fun playing with it outside and having the neighbors wonder what the hell is making that noise!

In case your mother never said this to you: Put that down, you'll put your eye out. A single tail can do some very impressive damage in the hands of someone who isn't practiced with one or whose enthusiasm gets the better of their expertise. If you want to play with one and never have before, do yourself a big favor and seek out some training. The sub who will still have ears and stuff attached to them when you are finished will thank you later.

Take care of yourself

There are sport cracking groups worldwide, they are mostly vanilla, but it is a good start, when you can choose a leaf on a bush and take that one & none others, you are pretty good. You can then advance to cracking on a t-shirt hung at chest height to perfect your distance and targeting. You want to start way back so you just barely touch the shirt, then move in a bit at a time. Robert Dante has some really good training videos out, both vanilla & lifestyle.

Someone asked what type of whip to buy for a singletail newbie.

In my opinion there are some great whipmakers out there, but for your first whip, while you still need good quality, you don't need antyhing all that fancy.

I'd go to Happy Tails at www.flogger.com and look for a 4' braided signal whip. The quality of their work is great, they are great community people who stand behind their work, and they've been around for long enough that this is a pretty widely held opinion. Their prices are reasonable.

So, you're not going to look like Johnny Super-Top with a short 4' whip, but it has several advantages over 6' and longer whips.

#1, it's easier to learn. Shorter is easier to control, and while you can still do considerable damage, it's less dangerous than longer whips.

#2, it's easier to use in a dungeon or play setting (like you bedroom). It really doesn't take up more room than a flogger, indeed, you can use the same strokes and patterns.

#3, it lets you be within touching distance of your partner. With a longer whip you have to stand far enough back that if you want to hear your partner, or touch her, you have to stop your pattern and come closer. A shorter whip just has you closer in in the first place.

#4, it's cheaper than a longer whip. If you're not sure that you want to spend a lot of time with this toy, it makes sense to start smaller and decide to buy another once you're sure this is in your realm if interest. Once it is, sure it's possible you may regret having spent the money on this shorter one, but I doubt it. All the advantages make it a great toy to have in your bag.

#5, it rolls up into a nice little coil that can fit in your back pocket of your jeans/chaps/leathers.

#6, You can still crack it and look cool!

Don't get a spiral or wound whip. Always get braided. One point is true about this kind of whip... it doesn't have a cracker. This means that sooner or later the end will start to decay and unravel. However if you take care of it, it can last a long time. I'm on 7 years with my last signal whip and I use it a LOT.

Hopefully this helps, good luck, Torque.

Super cheap model for learning the absolute most basic strokes with a single tail? Rubber snake. Only costs you a couple of bucks and available at any dime store. I once met a top in SF who specialized in using them. Worked as well or better than any short singletail, and he claimed there was less chance of damage from being hit by one. I don't know if that's true or not, but that and a teddy bear with a few jingle bells sewn on is a great way to practice your point work before practicing on humans.

Sorry, but I disagree about the rubber snake! :-)

The rubber snake will stretch to different lengths depending on how hard you throw it, the leather singletail will not. If you're really going cheap, buy a very thin width belt and try that.

me, Me, MEEEEEEE and i got bull whipped for my birthday in July. Consequently I attended a Whip crack this past weekend. I learned that there are many out of the lifestyle who are into competition whip cracking. If you say i like single tails they will know you are in the lifestyle because they use the correct terms for each whip.
