China calls for return of Guantanamo Bay inmates

Closing Gitmo won't be easy, despite what some want to believe.

Not when some detainees have nowhere to go (and live).

Sounds nice, but there's all those damned human rights treaties that get in the way.

Seems China's likely to do some highly impolitic things to the Uighurs should they ever get their hands on them.

EU nations may take freed Gitmo inmates off Obama's hands

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's honeymoon period has crossed the Atlantic: European nations are planning on holding a conference next month to discuss resettling freed terror suspects who are currently held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

A German diplomat in Washington told The Washington Times that his country was prepared to take responsibility for absorbing some terrorist suspects once Obama fulfills his campaign pledge to close the controversial detention facility that the Bush administration has operated at Guantanamo.

Ulrich A. Sante, press counselor at the German Embassy in Washington, said representatives from European nations would meet in January to discuss what roles they would each play to cooperate with the Obama administration once Guantanamo was closed.

"We have always supported any policy that went toward closing Guantanamo," Sante added.

Nothing sudden about it.  The Bush administration has demurred on releasing the Uighurs to the Chinese for quite some time on fears they would be tortured and killed once they got to Beijing.

The larger question of Gitmo has always been--what do we do with these people now that we've captured them?

What you do is designate them POWs and hold them according to the Geneva Conventions until hostilities are over.

Its not much good to call human rights now after what has happened to date.

Works great in a conventional war.....but how does that play out in a "War on Terror" that has no end?

There is every reason to treat them as POWs - not the least of which is that one can hold them until hostilities finish; this becomes a bargaining tool if handled well.

Oh, and then there's the effect of not abusing them as "illegal combatants" and so recruiting many more enemies for the future and making the problem worse.

Or maybe the idea is a war without end?

A war against an idea....yeah, that's one without any plausible end.

Wars end when they are against nations.  Wars perpetuate when they are against anything else.

Then one might consider that it were better to choose one's battles wisely.

And to choose one's friends wisely too. One cannot possibly hold that human rights are important in any way when one chooses to support friends who have been engaged in the systematic removal and abuse of human rights for sixty years and shows no inclination to stop that process in the near future.

It is no good to blame a dog for biting, if one ties it to a tree and beats it.

That is true, the so called ''  War on Terror '', is a war without a defined conclusion, an end date, what to do if the right things occur. How the hell did we allow ourselves to be sucked into such a stupid venture, as a war on terror , the enemy can be anyone those in control say is an enemy, including people of our own country, basically anyone who threatens or is said to be threatening the status quo. In such a situation things like bills of rights and such are of no use, because of the knee jerk legislation that has been brought in to fight terror will override that, tell me if that is wrong ?

As to the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, perhaps put them back from whence they came, where they were taken from, if they had no part of hostilities, were on holiday in the region, let them carry on with their holiday and peaceful actions. Those that were a threat, well, they can continue to fight, that way, if they get caught again, perhaps the captors might have some real evidence this time, and treat the captives as prisoners of war, not something they cannot prove.

Maybe we can give them a couple coats of that leaded paint they keep using, that should protect them for a while....lol.

Well, the Bush administration decided to create an entirely new branch of law for dealing with captured people that were neither POWs nor domestic citizens.  There's always been a lot of making up the rules as they went along.

About time that indefinite holding gets replaced with some sort of disposition.

Well, they wearn't "in uniform" so under the Geneva Accords we can take them out back and shoot them as spies.
Some that they have released went right to Iraq to join up with al qeada.
You can't let them go and you can't keep them so that leaves one option, put them on the majic carpet ride to allah.
That's where they want to go anyway.

LadyE, if we were to deal with them according to the terms of the Geneva Conventions, that would mean lining them up against the wall, and shooting them.  I'm ok with that.  Are you?

I'm perfectly OK with us choosing to either be the biggest bastards on the planet or the most saintly - I just wish we'd choose, because then we might stand a chance of winning this.

You can't win the war on terror it is impossible, it's like trying to win the war on human nature.

Human's exist each with their own goals in life and some of those goals are better than others.

Where does the Geneva convention talk about executing prisoners? I thought the Geneva convention covers their treatment once imprisoned not what happens to them after that. Would be interesting to read in a legal document the right way to execute a prisoner.
