here is why i dont carry a gun- first, it was in my car, some punk kids kept cuttung me off, so i pulled it on them, i could have been killed legally probably while pointing it at them. then, it was in the house. some dude( i swear, he worked at a postoffice for 25 years-seriously) was stalking my new girlfriend, she moved into my house, he found it,called 40 times a day screaming, then he came over the day he told her my address on the phone, so we were ready. he pulled up, we FREAKED( he screamed about cutting us up and shit on messages), loaded the .357 magnum, i pulled it up and shot his truck. I could have killed a little kid watching tv across the street. then my girl grabbed the gun and went out into the street and shot at him 3 more times. me,him and the whole neighborhood called the cops. it goes on, but i think you can see why i dont have a gun anymore. this really happened.
ok, let me just add that after terrorizing us for months, he never bothered us again[sm=biggrin.gif][sm=biggrin.gif][sm=biggrin.gif]so its a bit of a tough call

Better to be Judged by 12 than to be carried by 6

Owner59 -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 3:31:06 PM)

How about being judged by 12 after accidentally shooting a loved one, friend or bystander?

Guns cut both ways.

Aneirin -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 3:39:27 PM)

The trouble with people brandishing guns, too quickly can something escalate out of control and all common sense. Things happen that were not meant to happen and once someone is dying or dead, there is no going back.

Curious minds would like to know if anyone posting here has actually had a gun pulled on them or being shot?
If so do you carry a gun yourself?

Yes, I have.  Was pistol whipped as part of that encounter.   Permanent damage to my jaw.   And that was when I went along with the thug's "request" for my money.

He then searched my pockets and my underwear.  Threw my keys into the bushes.

Cops were only two blocks away...

I've gotten shot at.  Coupla punk/ gangbanger wannabes wanted to use the 40 acres I was living on at the time as a drug transshipment point and I told them no.  They thought they could scare me by taking a couple of potshots at me with their daddy's .22's.  What they didn't expect was for me to return fire.  I coulda dropped them both, but I decided not to.

Then you watch the news and read the papers.  They guy who was with his son on the subway in Philidephia.  Kissed his son on the head, sat him down, and attacked a sleeping man with a hammer without provication.  Or a couple years back, a off duty Wisconsin sherrif's deputy got called a name at a party, went and got his department issued rifle and started shooting, killing a number of people.  That one got lost to obscurity pretty quick.  They guy who opened fire in the mall last year.  I could go on.

And yes, I carry with a Utah CCW, everywhere that I legally can.  Not because of fear.  Just simply that bad guys don't make appointments.  A Sig P226 .357 SIG in a Blackhawk SERPA holster to be specific.

Crush -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 4:55:18 PM)

I carry concealed  (with CWL ) all the time, except at the university where I work.  Then it is in the car parked roadside.  I practice at least weekly.

I even bring it with me on cross country trips to Las Vegas, since my CWL is now recognized in Nevada.

It isn't about being "a cowboy" or "mall ninja" by "packing heat."  I carry because, as others have pointed out, it is easier to level the field if I ever encounter bad guys again.   I *may* not get to use it, but that doesn't mean I won't.  Air bags protect you in a crash, but not if a bridge falls on you.  Same way for the handgun...may not protect in all situations (can I have that body armor please!) but can in most possible scenarios.

Three seconds, three yards, three rounds.

I don't ever want to use it since every bullet because if I do, it will really ruin my day.  But you know, I'd rather be alive to have that day ruined and the rest of my life ahead of me.  So I'm ready to never use my gun against a person, but I'm ready to do so if I need to to protect my life or those around me.  Not prevent robbery.  But to protect a person from serious harm.

But hey, you aren't required to have a gun.    I don't like a lot of things....I just don't purchase or engage in them.   Example:  Anal sex.   Gonna get a tattoo that says "exit only" back there one day!

And there are already plenty of laws regarding the misuse of guns that just need to be enforced.   Usually when we hear of a misuse, it is because some law was already violated BEFORE the misuse.

Besides, if you want to cause mayhem, it is much easier and cheaper to do with a car, a knife, a gas bomb, or any variety of household chemicals....check out the Anarchist's Guide or The Big Book of Mischief.

FR

I don't carry a gun around with me, but I do own guns.  I own guns for hunting and recreational shooting firstly, for protection secondly.  Sometimes I carry one in my truck; we're allowed to have a weapon in vehicles while on a journey by law in Arkansas.  I am not a big fan of handguns, but I do own a couple.  One of them is a Luger that my grandfather took off a German soldier in WWII.  So it's a family heirloom; I've only fired it once.  The other is a .45 1911 replica.  I carry that sometimes in the truck when I'm going somewhere.  Generally if I'm going to the ATM late at night; I'll take it with me.  The gun that I keep loaded at home is a 12 gauge Mossberg.  I like guns; I think they are a lot of fun.  But, I'm not a gun nut.  I do believe in the 2nd Amendment, and I believe citizens have the right to own weapons.  I also think people should have the right to carry them.  I don't even think we should have to get CC permits to carry them.  I don't have one, and I won't get one.  If I feel the need to carry a gun, I will.  It's only a misdemeanor, and I would deal with the consequences.  I'm not spending my money or my valuable time getting permission from the state to protect myself.  I refuse to play along with this nonsense that only the government sanctions who can carry a gun, and who has the need to carry one.

I know. I still hate the NRA, and the whole "good old boy" mentality. You don't need 6 AK's to thwart a burglar. Such a conflicted liberal...lol.[;)] Oh, and if you hurt a child, or an animal? Intentionally I mean, and without consent in the case of women, no gun for you asshole. Ever. No second chance.

misst, did you ever see the movie with Jodie Foster, "The Brave One"? It made some sense of women and guns to me anyway.

PanthersMom -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 6:24:09 PM)

if my ex brother in law is ever released from prison, following his conviction for murder, i will carry a gun.  cub will carry a gun.  i will personally pay for each of my boys to go to classes, be licensed and purchase them a gun.  why?  because he has threatened each member of the family, even from prison and despite repeated efforts to stop him, continues to do so by involving third parties.  seeing as he's already proved he is capable of murder at least once; there are rumors he has done it more than once but nothing has been proven so far, i think i am well within my rights to protect my family.

I have mentioned here before about having been in situations where keeping a firearm ready to go in the home was necessary.  I wish that was not necessary for many people but that does not change the nature of criminal activity and illegal firearms.  An individuals circumstances depend much on their country and its laws, the society around them, are they in a densely populated urban environment, the suburbs or in an isolated rural area?  Much depends on the crime rate in their area and their previous experiences in life.  Hopefully we can respect the choices that others take regarding their own safety and continue to be civil in these discussions.

I think it's ashame that we must continue to have locks, vaults, and alarms for our homes. A small lack of morals has destroyed a ton of trust.

OH MY GAWD

It's always the same old Shit.

Why do you need this gun? why have it? why not live without it?

Okay Fine Why have Many religions why not just one. Just Christianity and only in Evangelical Fashion.

Why let women vote, men can do just as good a job without them!

Why Pay Taxes at all, Who Needs Streets and Public Education?

Who Need Free Press I think only one person should Monitor what we read.

I mean come on people. We do it because we have the right to and as long as we have the right to do it you should all be fighting to KEEP that right. If you aren't in America, Then this doesn't really apply, but from the far left to the far right if you start picking and choosing WHICH rights we should have anyone of the above can become a very REAL situation.

I'm outta this now. God this shit always pisses me off. I mean are people really that dense?

Firstly what strange comparisons, women having the vote is the same as being allowed a gun?

Well I actually think that some 'rights' are not good, no people shouldnt just fight for the rights they have if those rights are not benifical. Look back in history at 'rights' that people had, the 'right' to own slaves, yup people should have fought to keep that one going. Sorry this is less arguing about whether people should have guns and more about the ignorance of just accepting the status quo. Arguing that you should have something simply because you have it is stupid.

ArticMaestro -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/29/2008 9:25:04 AM)

With slavery it was a right to own property.  There was no specific right to own slaves.  It was simply a legal change in that people could no longer be considered property, hence could not be kept as slaves (as had been the norm in most societies for a few thousand years).  The underlying right is still there...You can own a toaster, but people can not be put in the same class as a toaster.

The answer to both is yes and either isn't a good situation to find ones self in......I have always carry a weapon, most of my post miltary work experience has been in the security field so the need to be armed was there..BH

bratnwranglers -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/29/2008 1:26:04 PM)

It's not guns that kill people, it's the person behind the trigger not having the mental well being or the training to know how to properly handle a weapon...

as far as carrying one, i grew up with weapons in the household and learned how to properly handle them at a young age and continued to do so growing up. infact, one of my brothers is now a sniper. most of my family does carry a weapon and it doesn't bother me at all, just how we grew up, and i will continue to have some kind of weapon in my home, probably at least one shotgun.

I only carry a gun when I am planning on shooting it. Otherwise it stays in the safe.

A. I live in Iowa.
B. I am not a paranoid freak.

it is? I was told, when i applied for the license to CCW, that having firearms is a right. CARRYING a firearm is a privledge which one must be licensed to do.
