FangsNfeet -> Why I Carry A Gun (12/27/2008 10:02:14 PM)

Why I Carry a Gun   My old grandpa said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin'knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin'."

I don't carry a gun to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil. I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government. I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry. I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone. I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die and go to Heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me."Police Protection" is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime; they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass whoopin'.

I have to agree.  I'm a strong proponent of gun rights, but that was fucking lame.  Sorry Fangs, thumbs down.  I've seen more "brilliant" arguments made for placing toilet paper rolls over or under.

moonvine -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 12:48:43 AM)

The only time I've needed a gun was to protect myself from the police.  Even had I had one I couldn't have used it unfortunately.  So I still don't have one.

[sm=agree.gif]  This is the wrong forum for a political posting such as this. On the other hand, am not sure just where it WOULD be appropriate.

On a side note; the reasons listed are preciesly why I always carry. And to those who ask why I carry when I don't need it I would ask, why do you carry health insurance when you don't NEED it; or home owners insurance when you don't NEED it.

I'll get off my soap box now but if anybody wants to continue this discussion feel free to send me an email to my account here and I would be happy to exchange thoughts on this.

i carried a gun when i would be called out during the night to my job in am inner city hospital (and was licensed to do so).

Why? I had a job to do, but was not willing to die doing it.

The above excerpt sums the problem up as far as I am concerned.  We rent several apartments.  Often the renter says he/she will be living alone.  The next thing the apartment has multiple tenants with at least one selling crack.  Then the threats start.  Then the police say it is not their problem but rather our problem, a civil matter, although there is an ordinance that allows the bureaucrats to screw with the property if they find anyone dealing drugs on site.  Then I have to evict the renter(s) which takes a month and in the past was filled with threats to our persons and property.  I now get the point across by sending a 6'4" employee who weighs 250 lbs and always wears a shoulder holster (has CCW) to serve the notices etc..  The point is taken by the dealers.  They may stay the entire 30 days it takes to evict them but they know the ground rules.  And, we pay taxes for what police protection......?  The police are scared and I really don't blame them but what are we supposed to do?

i don't agree. As i stated earlier in the thread, i carried a gun. The reasons were pretty well covered in the opening post.

DesertRat -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 5:28:25 AM)

Well, I'm armed (possessing but not carrying), but to me the OP is just 12 ways of saying "I'm scared!"

So? Do you think i carried a gun because i was fearless?

ETA...fear, to whatever degree, is why most of us are armed. You too, DesertRat.

~FR....just a little info that may clear some confusion....this thread was originally posted in the "humor "section.
It's since been moved to Off Topic, so some of the earlier posts reflect the fact that it wasn't funny...

Owner59 -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 6:45:00 AM)

Guns won`t keep you from getting shot.

A bullet proof vest might,...might keep you from getting shot.

IMO,people want to carry a gun to feel bigger,badder,more powerful.Invincible.

Thinking,"I can handle anyone ,any trouble" they will eventually find it.

DesertRat -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 6:49:12 AM)

It could come into play in a home invasion scenario and it's fun to target shoot, but I have never felt the need to carry it. Even when working along the US/Mexican border, alone, before cell phones were common. Not even when I worked at a porn theatre in one of the very roughest parts of a large, grungy city. And I sure wouldn't see it as a way to be safe from my government, as some do. If it ever comes down to that, things will already be way past salvaging. People make too much of guns. To me, this thread makes as much sense as "Why I have an 1100 gallon reserve water tank", or "Why I use soap when I wash my hands".

So the majority of Britain and im pretty sure the rest of europe must be fearless.

I didn't think the people over there had a say in the matter...didn't they get their guns taken away?

Owner59 -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 6:59:21 AM)

A gun in the home is not the same as "carry a gun".

The pistol pack`n wanabe tough guy,carrying a gun in public places isn`t a good idea and won`t make anyone safer.

This also applies to many gun owners too.

Good point. There is, however, one ironclad reason to have a gun handy, one that even I can't argue with: Zombies!!  I'm sure I could handle one or two. If there's five or six, I can probably dodge and outrun them. With a Glock 10mm, allowing for two shots per zombie (a safety margin is always wise when dealing with the undead) I could handle, say, seven. Still the best reason to pack heat, vis a vis zombie attacks would be so one could off him/herself if totally surrounded.
