Do I appear to be one???

Thank the 'No Child Left Behind' program, we are graduating kids who can't read.  The US is fast slipping in quality of education.  Granted, some conspiracy theorists claim this is exactly what the upper echelons of society and government want to create a new peasant class.

Ahah!!!! Now I understand. I guess this means I’ll be able to get the peasants I need to work my estates in Europe after I petition the World Court to return them to me..

Ok seriously now; those of you who have or have had dogs and other intelligent animals or even Ums will know that the problem is not literacy. People who make these spurious contacts are excising the well known art of Selective
Hearing/Understanding/Reading.
(You pays your money and takes you choice).   I get a couple of these daily not counting those from Nigeria. My response? Delete/Block  I did get one from someone who I am talking to who wanted to know my name and marital status and who commented that she loved my profile. I pointed out that my name (Iron Bear) and marital details are in my profile for all to read. We just share pleasantries so no skin off my nose.

I'd bet your wording was taken as a challenge. Adjust your bulk mail settings so it filters the mail. That will get most of it.

No, you can't really blame it on No Child Left Behind.  It was not enacted until 2001.  On what are you going to blame the 100 years before that?  People see the title, No Child Left Behind, and they think they know what it covers.  But usually, they don't. They think it means that schools are advancing students that aren't learning (I've got news - schools have been doing that for a long time).  NCLB does four things:

1.  Requires schools districts to make their achievement results available on an annual basis, and for individual schools that do not show progress, the district must provide supplemental services to that school.

2.  Grants more freedom for school districts to use federal funds in ways they need them (instead of using them the way the federal government previously required).

3.  Provides extra funding for proven educational methods.

4.  Allows parents to transfer their children to a better school if their original school underperforms for two years, and the school district must provide the transportation.

My parents both worked full time.  Mom read to me every night, did flash cards, all that.  By kindergarten, I could read at a third grade level.

When I was a teacher, and sent home flash cards with my kids who were learning disabled, the parents looked at me in amazement and said it was MY job to teach their child, they shouldn't have to do anything!

Our adopted grandchild (who lives across the street) goes to a fancy preschool, and at age five (well, in two weeks!) cannot write his name.  His parents, both college graduates, do not read to him, or model any kind of academic activity.

Tell me again about the latest and greatest fad?

I get amazed that people actually post these type of questions. Sometimes I wonder what Utopia they are living in. Shakes my head and mumbles off into my not-so-utopia reality.

Lady H,
Reading and flash cards were a part of my childhood also and I carried on that tradition with my Ums. We had tons of books and reading every night. I took flashcards and learning games with us and kept them in the car. I made it an after-school game. One of my Ums won an award for reading in the first grade.

Those are some of my sweetest memories: Reading time.

5.   Requires "teaching to the test" rather than age appropriate knowledge, which is my biggest problem with it.

I call it "every child left behind."  It is a disaster.

That's not even taking into account the fact that it is an unfunded mandate...

No, it's the fact that people have nothing to lose by e-mailing you.

Same principle as what underlies spam.

Who said?  You must think that I tire very quickly.

On topic, yes, it is a pain and yes, it is a waste of time in most cases, but every time I receive an email from someone where it is completely obvious that My profile isn't read, I send a reply saying that they need to read the profiles of the people they contact.  They are then blocked and deleted.  I don't know if it makes a difference, but blocking them saves Me from being troubled again.

I refuse to set up the filters.  There are people on these boards who contact Me for friendly conversation, even if we aren't what the other is looking for.  It wouldn't be worth it to lose those contacts.
