Okay, I'll try...

In a nutshell the 1950's lifestyle, just like any period lifestyle, for example the Victorian lifestyle, is one based on traditional values of the time. This isn't really a kink, a role play, or even a fetish, but more a statement that you prefer to live according to more traditional values than modern ones.

Many of us know the name Elise Sutton and her specific views on female domination, and for me one of the leading authorities on the period lifestyle and Aristasian philosophy is Miss Martindale though her interpretation is based more I guess on the 1940's than the 1950's.

I am an example of this lifestyle, though I'm not 1950's, but I do have what I call a 1960's mindset, I'm very Bohemian, free-thinking, non-materialistic, and together with Ala I live more or less the 1960's lifestyle. This doesn't mean I reject modern values (I just prefer traditional values), refuse to use modern technology or choose to live like a member of the Amish community, I live in the modern world, but my mind, heart and soul lies in a place between Monterey and Woodstock. The focus of my musical tastes is between 1964 and 1974, hence I listen to a lot of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Motown, the Mamass and Papas, Loving Spoonful, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, etc. I'm influenced by people such as Martin Luther King, Doris Lessing, Malcolm X, and I have a fascination with 1960's culture and society, especially the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

If I could have a car, my car would be a Trabant, which was just as much a car of this period as the Mini Coopee, Austin Morris or Citreon 2CV.

Very true, its funny what criteria people use to base a "true woman" or a "true man" on. With every person it is going to be different. Personally as far as I am concerned, I am a true woman. I meet my man at the door, come in and have him remove my shoes and then have him bend over my knee for a good spanking. Works for him and Me.

i absolutely love the 50s lifestyle to me, it was actually how i was raised on both sides of my family, more old fashioned if you will. to me it is the man is the head of the household, brings home the bread and maintains and the woman prepares the meals and make sure everything is clean ect... (although im sure that could and would flip in a Domme situation however you would like to work it)... but i think its more of a mindset then what you are wearing, because me personally...i abhor dresses and skirts, much rather be in jeans :) but to each thier own ...happy new year A/all

I read a book several years ago...translated from Swedish with a female author I think...that described this sort of scenerio. The women were in charge of society, head of the household, etc while the men took care of the children, the house and their women. It was written as fantasy-satire so I'm not sure where it would be in the bookstore. To be completely honest I didn't much care for the depiction of it all but, looking back, I think that had more to do with my state of mind rather than the quality of the writing. If I can remember the name I'll pass it on.

Although it's probably a techinically incorrect interreprtation....I think gender doesn't matter in the context. A 1950's household does sound wonderful but I would still want to be able to have my career. (And he does too since I get most of my arguing out of my system at the job.) My defination of a 1950s household is the ideal of a stable, happy home where someone else is in charge. The details (or genders or jobs) are up for debate.

Although it is not directly relating to the period but it leads into it. a wonderful read (forget the film which was crap) is "Cheaper By The Dozen" and it's sequel where the widowed mother had to dun the home as well as the consulting engineering business.. One of the attractions of both the Victorian and '50s lifestyle is the security in the home and the good manners. yet for me I remember the suburban 1/4 acre blocks with their white picket fences with "Hills Rotary" cloths hoists in the back yard and the husband on a Saturday morning mowing the laws with a victor petrol lawn mower.... Some images never leave you..

Over simplified statement...so foregive me.....many roles and indeed titles adopted by the 'English School' are based Brit social conventions of ols....upstairs/downstairs...the Master/servant erotic liaisons, 'English' punishment....the love of caning and the hidden stereotype of the repressed submissive male which emerged from the English public school system.
So too: the 1950 household....emerged as men, returning victorious from fighting in WW II came back to a Britain needing to re=establish gender specific power based relationships when mush of the class system and roles of men and women had been literally blown apart during the Blitz. There is indeed a distinct Brit bdsm culture now but that is another story....the 1950 household did exist and does exist in bdsm so-called lifestyle, albeit in imitative form.
Gender specific men are men and women are women. Spanking replaces the more or less acceptable weekly Friday night rituals of wife beatings. Precise housework and nurturing your man each evening when he came home from work, kids seen but not heard....listening to the head of household's every word.....
i was raised in the 1950's in an extended fifties household....where my mother's parents, as the elders, were nursed and cared for as part of the plan. Except of course that a 1950's woman was, at least in a working class household, also a breadwinner, tireless and exceptionally strong. Beef, chicken, pork and lamb were specials of the Sunday roast and left overs caregully cooked on Mondays. Wash day was Monday. Dusting day was Tuesday and so on with slight variations in each household. Strict codes of dress with best for Sundays. Hire purchase and an amazing weekly laundry service started to erode the lifestyle as did tinned and preserved food.
Thank god for the nineteen sixties, sexual freedom, druga and rock and roll. However the older i get the more i regress to those days when life was simple.......except of course if you were LGBT in any way.....or black or Asian or indeed anything outside of the Protestant Ethic. I've recently had shoulder surgery for two torn ligaments, bone spurs and shredded bicep.....my surgeon asked how?...i said life was hard when i grew up.....and ot was carrying heavy shopping, lighting fires, kneeding dough, cleaning windows and looking after neighbours' babies, not to speak of first jobs in a factory packing chocolates.......
change is good and so is imitation if it means mimicking the good rather than the bad.

Bill W has many friends.

I grew up in the 50's and I don't idealize it nor want it back. I was a stay at home Mom when most mothers were working. It was a choice and am happy women who wanted to work were able to in the 80's. Yes i like dresses, the long ones, or long skirts with halter tops, which you couldnt wear out in the 50's. Was not appropriate. Truisms of what was a man and what was a woman was more accepted back then. Thank goodness truisms are seen by more people as hot air. I still dress pretty much the 60's because it is comfortable for me. Oh please do not take my dishwasher away from me, and my laptop.
