I had a letter come in the mail today from a company that I had applied to for a merchants account. I wanted to be able to take credit cards for my start up.

To sum it up: It said that it was possible that my private information had been compromised and or could have been stolen..They apologized for the inconvenience it might cause and offered me a years subscription of identity protection paid in full from a separate company.

I did call the company and do realize that this could be a marketing scam..get a year free with offers streaming to your mailbox kinda deal so I did inform them that I would be contacting an attorney. If I find that this is a scare tactic and I have footing for a case, I will go after them.

My question is: Has anyone else went through anything like this, if so, what did you do about it and what was the outcome?

Sounds like a ploy that just skirts illegality. Get a credit check done from all 3 big companies. If nothing is amiss, send all the info to your state's Attorney General.

Somehow the word "schill" comes to mind.

I have never been though this, no, but that doesn't mean I have nothing to say.

I think the first thing I would do is request copies of any and all applications they have recieved supposedly from me. If they do not comply, threaten to supenoea (sp) them. If that doesn't work, then carry though with the threat of course.

I'd bet marketing scam because it came to you, an identity thief would not have done that, so if you get a chance to slam them for it, I say go for it. That's a scare tactic and even if there is no statutory law by which they can be punished, perhaps our twisted tort laws could get you something.

Oh ya, I am as honest and nice as can be, until there is a reason not to be. If this is a scare tactic, I would love to return the favor. Watch the costs though, don't hurt yourself making a point.

You may be correct.

Keep in mind this is a company that I applied to for a merchants account, so I did originally give them the info.

They gave me a number to talk to the person they say originally handled my account so I'll give an update in 2 days as to what has happened..I will take your advice on requesting copies of my app...It's been awhile so I don't remember all the info I did give so that will help. I'm actually less concerned about someone doing harm with my info than if the company was trying some marketing scare tactics. With that I could become agitated.

I had someone try that recently with my business domain name. They contacted me saying another company was going to buy up all the domain names close to mine. The supposed ideal end result for them would have been if I chose to buy them before the other company did from them of course so I could protect myself.

I went through their email, copy and pasted parts of the letter into Google and found references to the same company by others who then informed everyone on that forum as to how to fight back.
