Seems extreme, but that is one way to get rid of Palin.

She did say she could see Russia from her house [8|]

that gal is not the shiniest bullet in the box.

kittinSol -> RE: Russian professor predicted 2010 demise of US (1/1/2009 8:14:11 PM)

Actually, wasn't it wotshername from SNL, Tina Fey, who made up the whole "Russia from my house" thing?

I saw on the news that Das Kapital Manga version is making a killing in Japan: best seller on the booksellers list. I think it's fantastic that the youth of today is finally learning the truth from the writings of yesterday ;-) .

Times, they are a changing [8D] .

Palin actual quote was: "They're our next-door neighbours and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."

"People are asking me if it's possible to see Russia from Alaska. Well, the Bering Strait is over 50 miles (80 km) wide. The horizon is about 2.89 miles for a average person standing on the surface of the earth. However if one were stationed on a 100-foot tower, the horizon or farthest distance one could see before the curvature of the earth limits vision at the horizon is mere 12.25 miles. Thus, it is not possible to see Russia proper from Alaska across the Bering Strait." Matt Rosenberg About.com

Gee, why does that map look exactly like the Map from an old Mini Series called AmeriKa?????

According to its Wikipedia entry, mainland Amerika was divided into 12 areas.  The map above has four.

People do love post-apocalyptic fiction; I know I do.  The professor's assertions that the South will fall under Mexican domination leaves out my post-apocalyptic, mutant biker gang.  We're the one that are going to be running the show.

The mutant bikers are going to defeat the Holnists?

Nor does he know his history.

Remember the Alamo, anyone?

Ya, but, didn't you all get killed at the Alamo?

Same person who owns me now....ME.

I was just thinking the same thing.  And I have to add, having looked at his map - if the ol' boy thinks that the South will end up under Mexican domination/control - omg he soooooooo does NOT know Southners.  More likely that - should such a split occur - that portion of the US would literally become it's own country, under No One's outside control, with tighter borders than a Victorian prude's chastity belt and truss!  Hell, half the time we don't pay particular attention to what the yahoos in DC are blathering about - much less give a shit what someone from Outside says.

Exactly, if that scenario occurred, it's the mexican government that should be worried. Their people have lived under corruption for too long, something a texan invasion would fix.

Ya know, it's funny, plenty of native americans think they are going to take the country back too.

hlen5 -> RE: Russian professor predicted 2010 demise of US (1/1/2009 9:09:55 PM)

Given that a portion of the people of the US think they owe no civic responsibility to their community either locally or nationally (How many younger men have you heard about emigrating to Canada in the event of a draft??) does anyone think that the US could withstand a civil war and not be conquered from a foriegn power?

not when it is an inside job.

hlen5 -> RE: Russian professor predicted 2010 demise of US (1/1/2009 9:18:41 PM)

Sorry I didn't state what I meant correctly. I meant, if we were in a civil war and vulnerable, does anyone think we could stand an assault from outside as well?
Maybe as an entire nation we could come together, but not if we were already fighting amongst ourselves.

edited for spelling

A quick Google shows that the distance from Little Diamede Island, Alaska to Big Diomede Island, Russia is only 2 1/2 miles.  http://www.gov.state.ak.us/trade/2003/tad/russia/facts.htm  So, yes, there ARE places in Alaska where you can see part of Russia, though not from mainland to mainland.

Hmm, New Mexico coming under the influence of Mexico and Mexicans?

Shit, that's not a prediction, that's an observation.

Next.
