Why are labels so offencive to some? i reason that as long as respect is used, a label expresses an understanding, be it true or false. And if the interpritation is false, than it can be corrected. Right?

Some are offended by any label, it seems, and loudly declare how offensive it is for them. I've also seen some so offended by labels that they'll demand that others to not use labels on anyone and will rush to the defense of anyone that is being labeled, often without being asked. Often the argument is that each person is an individual and unique and therefore cannot be labeled. (shrug)

My personal opinion on this topic is while it's fine to refuse labels, it's not okay to insist that others refuse to use them as well. It's pretty annoying and counter productive and frankly, it's an abuse of political correctness for it's own sake.

I've seen it said that labels are a kind of short-hand to describe an orientation, preference, etc. If I use the label rose, my topic is about roses in general, and I may use a specific name of a rose, which is, again, a label. It helps with communication, without having to go dig into Webster, or some FAQ, or whatever and laying out an essay when a label will do so nicely. Using a label tells others where I'm coming from when I use it, without having to use paragraphs of pre qualifying statements.

I'm okay with these people, but they often tend to derail topics needlessly. They often make communication difficult, and they're so focused on the label issue that they often never contribute anything constructive to the topic at hand.

Because most of the time, labels are attached WITHOUT respect--you ask an awful lot of the majority of humanity.

I am not a label fan. Maybe because it seems to box me in to who i am. I can live without them, but a lot of people cant so if they need it, i will cough up a label for them.

I think people use them for some kind of frame of reference.  Labels are convenient, and usually get a message across in a way that is easily understood.

Yes, some labels can be offensive to some people, so I don't advocate using them without thought to their effect on others.  But I also think some people are hyper-sensitive about some labels, and need to chill about it.

I would only be offended by a label that is used to describe me, if it was wrong.  Say, if I were "labeled" a male when I am obviously a female, someone calling me Mistress without invitation when it's blatantly obvious that Mistress I am not, or if I were incorrectly labeled tall when the measuring tape says otherwise.  If some are hyper-sensitive to label abuse, meh, can't please everyone, right?

i am chilling. Actually am a lot better with labels then before, only break out in hives on half of my body:)

And if someone were to mis-label me in the ways you described it would not offend me in the least.  I would just label them as either "unobservant" or "downright stupid" and go on my merry way.  [:D]

Labels are wrong in general and should be avoided..it ends up categorizing people.

Depends on the intent and implications behind the label.

For instance, if someone who understands the pain process and how it effects me sexually calls me a masochist, then not only do I not mind, but I'm glad we were able to properly identify that aspect of myself without having to go through a lengthy explanation. On the other hand, if someone assumes that simply because I am a masochist, I like stubbing my toes or getting randomly whacked when I'm not in scene, then I have to turn around and educated them on what my masochism means to me.

I don't mind informing people on what labels mean to me, it's only when they insist on using them after I've told them differently that bother me. In general, some labels can be very helpful and can circumvent a world of boring exposition and dialogue, as long as both parties are able to adjust the labels they use on others for what the other person sees it as.

If for some reason I can't convince them, or they are not going to listen, then, as sujuguete said, I either mark them down as ignorant and unwilling or just plain stupid and move on.

I might get annoyed if someone runs around trying to stick them on other people uninvited, but eh, what are you going to do. Idiots and egomaniacs are everywhere. The best you can do is watch them dig themselves into their happy little hole.

I don't find lables offensive, I just find them useless. Calling yourself a slave, a submissive, a Master, a Dominant, a Mistress....none of those labels tell me about the individual person.

If labels are wrong...then how you can justify and accurately describe yourself to another person without using any?

I think "offensive" is a strong word, it's more like they're annoying or just plain boring.  They make everything seem so black & white, like if you're A, then you couldn't possibly have any B, C or D in you.  You must act only a certain way that A's do and why in the world are you acting like E or F if you're an A?  You're not an A, you're really a C.  I am too an A, because A's are better than C's.

They become even more annoying when people nitpick what the labels are and how to define them.  And then you get into those discussions about "What is an A?"  And then you get 35 difference responses on what being an A means to 35 different people.

And then new people join up and see all the different labels and get confused....yesterday I saw a thread that asked what the differences between pet, sub and slave were.  Which is a fair question if you're new.  But sometimes, the labels are nothing more than what someone decided to call you that day.  Or like, being collared or being owned.  Is there really any difference?  Well, for some there probably is, and for others there isn't. 

General labels like male and female, well sure, we need those.  It's when they overlap and become nitpicky or vague but have so much importance placed on them, that's when it gets annoying.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that it's the overuse of labels which is annoying rather then the use of labels?
