Springing off the Bugatti thread, does anyone else here have badass hobby cars?

I have a huge thing for old cars and ratrods, but don't know enough about them to start working on one. Eventually when I move into a bigger place with a garage, I plan on picking one up and tooling around with it until I get the hang of things.

C on the other hand, has maybe 5-6 vintage cars, mostly parked in the shop. None are running (eyeroll) except the Corvette and the Studebaker... the Stude is great, we drive it all over the place. Everyone loves that thing.

So... post pics of your old cars so I can drool over them!

we have a 66 chevelle and a 74 vega, both set up for drag racing but the chevelle can still be driven on the street.  both are getting new engines this winter, so they're not running right now, but the new engines should be ready to go by spring.  i'll have to see if i can dig up the pics and put some in my profile or have cub take some new ones.  the car club we belong to has a nice garage, complete with a painting booth, so when we settle on colors they'll be getting a facelift as well, lol.

My baby Sorely neglected lately (moved on to bikes when gas broke $3/gallon), needs a total front-end rebuild, but driveable.

Owned this car for a while, but she hated me- one problem after another after another. Finally sold her at a big loss to a guy in the Netherlands, she's doing great now.

Drove this one for a year before I parted it out. Very ratty (this is her good side), needed more work than I had the time, money, and skill for. Don't drive a three-ton sedan with a dead power brake booster in traffic unless you've got *serious* quads. Neat machine, though, real "Standard of the World" stuff.

I'm diggin' the Stude Has it got any goodies?

Stude is pretty raw, he doesn't plan on painting it, likes it just the way it is. New black leather seats, and an engine salvaged from a scrapped cop car apparently. (Have no idea what kind.. *sigh* must do moar car stuff more often) He did get it up to 135 last week.

Thanks... I forgot that CM doesn't like the at sign, and flickr uses it in their page URLs.  I fixee.
Your Studebaker 3 and "what is this" are also broken, extra http in there.
I would imagine it must be a Caprice LT1, unless he went old-school with a 440 or something... Don't think a modern Ferd mill is going to move it that fast without a blower.

I got them to load manually, but most people wouldn't bother 

Looks like a pretty standard T-bucket shell with a chop top and visor, some sort of small-block with Offy or Cal Customs valve covers, probably a hand-made radiator shell... Not sure what the front end is off of, looks too wide for a Mustang II. Nothing too out there.

I like the aesthetics of rat rods, but not sure I'd want one for more than driving it once or twice a year. There are way too many idiots clogging the road to go without airbags and crumple zones. I also happen to like motorcycles, but please don't call me on my hypocrisy.

looks like a chopped up t-bucket in need of alot of tlc.  what respectable car guy would leave the firewall in that condition?  tsk tsk, needs some lovin, poor car!

True, we've decided that we are both going to be squished if we ever get in a wreck in the Studebaker.... but it doesn't change the fact that it's a lot of fun to tear around in. It gets driven almost daily,

I'm driving my "dream car" now, see profile.
But, I saw a '36 Oldsmobile painted a burnt copper/orange at a car show here a few years ago that was exquisite!

So what is the score in the US regarding cars, what regulation do cars have to undergo to be legal for road use ? Can one just 'create' a vehicle and use it, or does it have to go through tests and stuff before it is road legal, like over here ? Do you have freedom with personal transport ?

I have always admired the US custom scene, my first love for a car, was a first generation Camaro, I think it was named 'streetfighter', anyways, it was all black and stripped out and lowered and on the cover of the custom car book I had.

Then it was this from a cult movie.

But our roads just are'nt big enough for these things.

I'm not quite sure, but I do know older vehicles do not have to undergo an emmissions test. It's awesome... I think the tag for the Studebaker is like 15-20 bucks a year, same with insurance.

The thing is, on a bike, you can wear full leather (with armor) and a great helmet. In an old car you can be killed by the horn in the center of the steering wheel.

So they can scrape some nice leather scraps and plastic shards off the pavement too? Everything's got a risk, you can't tiptoe around your whole life.

It varies wildly by state. Generally speaking, in the northeastern and western U.S., they have limits on what you can do with regards to the engine and emissions systems, depending on the age of the car (you can do more with older cars than with modern emissions-controlled vehicles), and several states have fairly exhaustive inspections. Other states, particularly in the southeast, have no safety inspection, and little to no regulation on what you can do with a car. I've seen vehicles driving on the street with the whole front end and doors removed.

If you're talking about building a car from scratch, it again varies by state. There are a lot of hoops to jump through to register a kit-built or home-built chassis, but it can be done. You're generally a lot better off getting a titled shell with a VIN you can register, and building around the VIN, even if you put an entirely new frame underneath the car.
