I would think any nonmajority sexual practice to fall under the kinky umbrella. And yes, that definitely includes ropes, whips and chains, orgies, threesomes and swinging. It even includes a monogamous couple swinging from the chandelier in my book.

However to most of the nonBDSM world it is a pejorative label. "You don't want to date him, he's kinky". So I would expect in a nonBDSM site for it to be used as shorthand for any unusual practice. Unusual meaning rare, not commonly practiced.

Does that mean something kinky for you would involve displeasure or fear in doing something radical from your perspective?  If this fear and/or displeasure involves tears and streaking mascara down your cheeks, I would like to participate!

The definition of kinky is, “marked by unconventional sexual preferences or behavior, as fetishism, sadomasochism, or the like”.

I consider anything i do to be the norm, conventional so for me kinky would have to be the activities i don't participate in. I really do not see myself as kinky, just normal.

Yes there would be tears and whimpers and snotting and running of mascara. Oh hang on no, there would be no running of mascara, i wear waterproof.

O.k., You got my attention with the RPG references (YaY nerdiness!)

Kinky: from ancient Greek (kenke) meaning "Benevolent Assailant." If you ask the Greeks, first recorded example of kinkiness actually happened before the dawn of man, when Cronus performed extreme CBT on Uranus, from which Aphrodite was born.  Later, some kinky man into beastiality put a few of his livestock in bondage equipment and began to flog them.  When they began to run away really, really fast (animals can't speak, so running away really fast was the safeword) it occurred to the zoophilic domme that  if he added a plank and two wheels to his bondage device he could get places.  Thus the chariot was born.  I assure you that all of this is absolutely true.  Who're you going to believe, the history books and forum posters who've been living the lifestyle for decades, or me, some random tranny you've never heard of? In my quest (seriously if this was an RPG, I'd expect mucho xp points) to meet new people, I've ended up adding 'kinky' to my ad titles and have found that that has other than bdsm connotations in the so called 'real world'. I"m curious if other people have had this experience. For myself, I define kinky as being bondage/discipline, Domination/submission and sadism/masochism overall and a general openness to the leather world. But in many cases, people are understanding kinky to mean things like swinging, polyamory or other open type relationships; one night stands and casual sex and/or even sexual adventurousness like threesomes and orgies.

kinky?
eccentric, far-out, licentious, bent,degenerated, depraved, deviant, licentious, odd, outlandish, peculiar, queer, quirky, sick, strange, unconventional, unnatural, unusual, warped, weird.................
rippled, rolled, swaying, swinging, ...???

mummyman321 -> RE: Define kinky (1/4/2009 8:03:17 PM)

Webster's defines Kinky as:
Main Entry:
kinky
Pronunciation:
\ˈkiŋ-kē\
Function:
adjective
Inflected Form(s):
kink·i·er; kink·i·est
Date:
1844

1: closely twisted or curled2: relating to, having, or appealing to unconventional tastes especially in sex ; also : sexually deviant3: outlandish , far-out
— kink·i·ly \ˈkiŋ-kə-lē\ adverb
— kink·i·ness \ˈkiŋ-kē-nəs\ noun

So it really comes down to anything outside of conventional sex. But the problem then become defining what is conventional? For some Satin sheet are kinky, others bondage. Its just a very general term to describe a whole host of play styles which is defined by indivdual tastes.

DelilahDeb -> RE: Define kinky (1/4/2009 8:49:44 PM)

What we humans experience limits our vision of whatever we do not experience. It is in our nature to differentiate (our brains are pattern-finding analytical systems). And, as innately social animals, we apply that pattern-finding skill to social groups. The more alike our own social group is, the finer the distinctions we draw to differentiate. And anyone outside the group gets labelled as other, whether we're distinguishing on the gross and visible differences like coloration and size, or on the subtler identities of public or private behaviors. The terms we use to differentiate range from merely foreign (meaning simply "not us") to xenophobic (meaning "unreasonable terror of not us"). And the rest is all subject to the level of our experience of life.

In other words, "How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm, after they've seen Paree?"

KINKY...... I thinkk kinky is anything but boring, anything that raises your pulse, makes your heart race in anticipation and gets your mind running with endorphines.......

I love KINK....... do you?

BamaD -> RE: Define kinky (1/5/2009 12:11:11 PM)

Kinky is one of two things.   Either something someone else like to do and you don't, or something you like to do that others don't.

It is either proof that there is something wrong with the person into the kink, or something more adventurous about the person depending on your prospective.

My first wife thought that it was kinky for a woman to perform oral but normal for a man to.  Note ex-wife.

DarkVoyeur -> RE: Define kinky (1/5/2009 12:17:45 PM)

Kinky is those freaks who only have sex in the missionary position for the purposes of procreation.

DanaYielding -> RE: Define kinky (1/5/2009 12:19:30 PM)

Anything beyond the standard missionary position between a married male and female couple engaging in sexual activity for the sole purpose of procreation...with the lights out. Can you believe that's really what my mother told me...on my wedding night! Hehehehe

I would tend to agree with you.
Although it's a non-specific term, when I encounter it I think of the first group of activities that you list (where some kind of power dynamic is played around with or at least implied), moreso than the latter.

lateralist1 -> RE: Define kinky (1/5/2009 4:20:21 PM)

Anything I don't like. Everything I do like is perfectly normal.
Sure I've done kinky things just to find out about them.
I am shocked to the core by anyone thinking I'm perverted or overly kinky.
I'm into Bondage Discipline Sadism and Masochism and good sex.
There is absolutely nothing kinky or perverted about that.
A lot of debauchery goes on in the name of BDSM. I can't help that but I can make sure I don't become part of it.

I've seen them, parading around in public wearing flannel and cotton, and keds on their feet.  Probably on their way to some den of iniquity like these "Grocery Stores" I hear so much about.. enough to make me run away screaming, if it weren't for the manacles..

colouredin -> RE: Define kinky (1/6/2009 7:17:45 AM)

Kinky is a personal thing. For one couple it could be very kinky for the woman to be on top. Kinky is something out of the ordinary for the individual.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Define kinky (1/6/2009 8:25:10 AM)

kinky = the absence of the conventional, which would differ according to culture and time period, as conventions of that nature are generally a slow moving target.

daddysprop247 -> RE: Define kinky (1/6/2009 9:00:06 AM)

i HATE HATE the term "kinky." but that could be due to my own perceptions of the word. i think of kinky as unconventional/non-status quo sexual interests, but for me the word also has a connotation of fun or play. there is no deeper meaning or purpose behind it, it's just some "deviant" activity people are engaging in for mutual pleasure and good times. nothing about either the lifestyle i live or my sexuality could be described in such a way, so it really burns my bum when people refer to D/s or M/s people as "kinky." sure, some of us are. but some of us aren't, and have no desire to be, and that's okay too.
