Haven't read all of the replies here. 
Kinky used to mean bdsm stuff but has somehow broadened. 
Something similar has happened with the phrase 'the Lifestyle'; it used to reference the swing lifestyle but now every alt lifestyle seems to be dubbed 'The' Lifestyle. 
The advent of the internet has brought on some odd liberties with terminology (Best for me not to even get started on the term <psychological diagnosis> of fetish; that's been completely popularized and inaccurately used).  I dislike the fluidity of word definitions.  Yes, terms are just a starting point of a greater conversation but if there is too much fluidity, the phenomenon obfuscates rather than illuminates the opportunity for communication. 
As far as a personal perception of kinky as related to me or others goes, I don't really have one.  I will sometimes use the old-style definition when self-describing: ie: I am kinky because I am interested in aspects of bdsm.

I like the old adage - to tie some one up and tickle them with a feather is kinky, to use the whole chicken is perverted!

Kinky means nonaverage sex. Anything that falls under the umbrella of alternative sexual practices could have the label kinky applied to them. Now that the op knows her definition is not one used by most people, she needs to find other ways to describe herself.

Or she could keep on insisting that everyone else understands exactly what she means and she can continue to be shocked that they aren't what she's looking for.

Kinky used to be understood to reference bdsm but it seems to have broadened in usage and scope.  I think it's another one of those terms that has broadened out to mean more than it originally did, so it muddies the waters but gives the opportunity for further conversation.
