I'm scheduled for a fairly heavy play session later today, and it occured to me that while I have the aftercare part pretty well down, I'm going nearly insane with the excitement/dread/fear/joy concerning what is going to happen tonight. Part of it is pure anticipation and impatience (why do we operate on clocks with measured time that takes forever? Why, I ask you?), but part of it is just not really knowing what to DO with all of these things running around in my head and body for the next five hours until we start.

So I wanted to ask other folks, and other submissives especially, what it is they do to prepare themselves for heavy play, mentally, emotionally, and physically? I've taken a long hot shower, and I will be stretching throughout the day (it occured to me that stretching would help with the soreness my muscles will have tommorow), eaten a good lunch.

But I'm still going a little out of mind at the moment. I've got my body prepared, but my mind is saying it needs something, too, and I'm not sure what that is.

So what do you folks do, think, or say to yourselves while you're gearing up for a session? How do you prepare yourself emotionally and mentally for the intensity of the scene? The last scene we played caught me completely by surprise with how heavy it was (it was a wonderful treat, just completely unexpected!), and I'd like to find a way to get my mind up to speed for this one, if that makes any sense.

Argh, I'm so rambly today. How does one prepare for the mental, emotional, and physical energy I will be using/absorbing/reflecting/etc, etc during this session?

Really nothing. But I have found that i do much better with a blindfold. I can get into it and get myself out of the environment and into the sensation. Especially when playing in our dungeon that has a lot going on. I can block out the others around. Warden has realized that this is important for getting me in the correct head-space. Even if he hasn't brought one, one can be made with my stockings.

I try not to think about it. He'll do what he wants. But if I dwell on stuff, I get panicky about what he might want to do. Mainly I focus on getting a good night's sleep beforehand, eating lightly but nutritiously, and being fully hydrated. And in having on hand everything I'll need for afterwards including water and hot tea in travel mugs so it stays hot.

That's a good idea, thank you! We have a couple of really nice blindfolds that we use sometimes (I've been asking him to use them more, sensory deprivation makes all things much more focused!), I'll let him know that if it's going to be as heavy as I think it is (at least for me), that I'm putting an official request for the blindfold!

And yeah, there's definately some of that panic going on right now! Last time really pushed me to my limits, and even shattered a few of them (in all the right ways), but it was hard to endure some of it. I mean, I'm happy to do so, but there's that whole fear thing going on, too. I guess that's what makes it so interesting!

Hot tea, I hadn't thought of that! We have some, I'll set out the cups and sugar so we have that on hand for right afterwards!

i second the blindfold suggestion.  i like to get ready with a soak in the tub....nice scented aromatherapy oils...incense, and listening to ahomemade CD with some of  my most stimulating tunes....but that's just me, and my style. During actual play, i don't care for music, i find it a distraction.

Mentally, i try to think of play as a form of service...providing myself as something for His pleasure. That feeling of being objectified is a strong part of my kink, and what i enjoy in play. Reminding myself of my place, having that "i'm a thing" mindset during a session... feeling the pain mixed with pleasure, does something for me that in many ways, nothing else can.  At the point of being bound and used in that way, i have absolutely no control.(even a safe word can only help if a partner respects it)  And that feeling of total subjegation, for me, borders on the devine.

Oh we have some IBprofen and asprin set aside for the session, that's for sure! (And definately for after!) I'd be lost without them!

And while I can't take a bath (our tub never fills up right) I did take the laptop into bed with me while I rest up for the session. There's music to be had youtube and we've got candles. (Just gotta dig out the ones we don't use for play!) That's a really good suggestion, something very soothing.

The bit about reminding yourself of your place, your service, and what you are for your Master is extremely helpful, thank you so much for that! I'm discovering that I like objectification and humiliation myself, so thinking about the role I'll be in for the session, not about what will be going on, nesscarily, but about my duty to serve and obey is making the jitters ease up quite a bit, thank you so much again for that.

i would offer words of caution aobut the pain relievers you mentioned in relation to play becasue they can thin your blood and could have an effect if youre doing any sort of impact play.   will it kill you?   not likely -- but it is somethign to tell the top

i find using arnica before play to be much better - its a homeopathic treatment good for soft tissue trauma and brusing, sore muslces (so good for tops who overexert) etc.

Arnica, thank you! I'd heard that you could take two asprin right before a session to increase bruising, but haven't tried that yet. Mostly I don't want anything getting in the way of being able to feel the pain (for the good and if needed, to know when to stop).

God, my husband needs something for afterwards, too - his arms and shoulders are usually killing him for days afterwards, and IBprofen and asprin just don't do it for him. Where can I get this arnica?

Arnica Montana can be found at any health food store. I would also advise against painkillers.

As for preparing, it really depends on my mood. If I'm crawling the walls I usually like to get rid of some of that energy. Put on some heavy music and crank up the volume. Nine Inch Nails, old Metallica, Godsmack....something along those lines. Sometimes I like to work out, go for a hike in the woods or a couple mile walk. Working out with a heavy bag is always good. Even driving on a windy road. Then comes the soaking, pampering and meditating for me.

i would NOT do Ibuprophen or Aspirin. First off, It will lessen your feeling of pain. Thats not a good thing. Pain is a signal. The other thing is that they are blood thinners. You do not clot as well on blood thinners. Also when on blood thinners you are more prone to bruising.

I'm really glad I started this thread, just having this to come back to and read and respond to is helping ease the anxiousness! And yeah, I'm not much for trying to take painkillers beforehand, at best it'll keep me from feeling the pain I WANT to feel and at worst it will keep me from feeling the pain I NEED to feel, even if it were just a couple of asprin or IBprofen. I will pick the Arinca here soon, that would be good to have an alternative. (again, espescially for hubby - he's such a guy in the sense that his head could be exploding and I still have to practically force him to take a single OTC painkiller).

Snacks are good - I had a light sandwhich for lunch, and a handful of chips a little bit ago, but I'm done with food until afterwards. My gag reflex is just not good enough to take a heavy session ON a full stomach, heh, and it's water from here on out.

I like the idea of listening to music, so earlier I put on some mellow rock (okay, technically probably "adult contempary", Anthony Stewart's Head alblum "Music for Elevators") and I'm feeling ALOT calmer now.

I'm soooo glad I found this place. Feeling so much calmer now.

I try to take an hour or so before playtime to do some meditation and grounding to calm my brain beforehand. I know myself well enough that if I don't settle the mind, it has a habit of projecting scenarios prior and end up stressed out because I'm doing too much anticipation and not in a good way! When I am grounded and focused, then I'm much more balanced and able to mentally and physically able to enjoy the session!

Touche, Bear and good point! I managed to do some really good calming breathing excersises earlier and calmed myself down considerably. Unfortunately, our playmates are running late, so the anxiety is beginning to slowly climb back up. Back to breathing.....lol

I have a mind which is constantly working in overdrive and it has a bad habit of over analyzing and over exaggerating things which haven't occurred yet!

i don't really prepare for a session except for making sure to smoke a fat one to calm my excitement/anticipation, etc., followed by an hour long nap before he arrives.

Elasticated sports supports for the shoulders are very good when expecting unfamiliarly heavy use of the arms. They are also 'macho' and can feel good, like kitting up for a fight. Oiling up beforehand also helps and can be part of play.
A slightly unusual alternative to music is a metronome. It can be fine adjusted to either emphasise rhythm or add calm.
