IronBear -> Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/4/2009 6:20:14 PM)

Often have I read comments regarding the negative impact of Political Correctness on society generally and on your Kink Life. It occurred to me that a thread right here would be a grand idea so all of us can vent not just on Political Correctness but particularly on it’s intrusion on the Wonderful World of Kink. If we can keep it mostly on the BDSM subject, I think (crosses claws on large paws and larger feet), that the Mods will allow this to remain here.

Recently I had a conversation with a long time acquaintance who is the epitome of Political Correctness in which she was adamant I must not refer to servants as such but as either serving persons or male servants and female servants. On the same vein she believed it was incorrect to refer to sub/slaves as such but to refer to them as male or female slaves and male or female submissives. So far she can’t fault the use of Dom and Domi unless it is the abbreviating of their names which she abhors and of course Master and Mistress is perfectly politically correct…

This made me think of a comedy skit I heard recently where some analy retentive politically correct twerp was decrying the nursery rhythm “Three Blind Mice” and stated emphatically it needed to be renamed: “Three Vision Impaired Rodents.

A few years ago the city of New York decided that the term "man hole", regarding the tunnel that is used to access the underground plumbing/electical and everything else that is down there, should be formally changed in order to be more politically correct. The city began a contest to choose a more appropriate name for this....thing. In the end, the winning submission was......"Man. Hole", short for maintenance hole. The winning submission won $1000. Now THAT's brilliance.

I am of the view that Political Correctness as well as Oprah Winfrey are going to be solely responsible for the capitulation of Western civilization as we know it.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/4/2009 8:47:24 PM)

The problem with any extreme is that it loses the decent good germ of truth behind it.  We should watch what we say, we should be aware of how our words and actions affect others, and we should try to hold to the concept that everyone should be given a fair shot and to help others when they are down and try not to let the "old ways" stick around when they are harmful to others.

If people want to call all of that PC and throw it all away because some people get crazy and extreme with it, that's a shame.  But I'll still do it.

Interesting post.
Am I correct that this relates a little to the labeling?

In part, yes but also because of several conversations I have been having in IM both here and in FetLife. Just seemed a fun and interesting rant for people to open up with two barrels on.

JustDarkness -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/5/2009 1:58:31 AM)

It sure will be.

I am curious (and not sure if it fits in) about the White D's wanting a black/afro american/coloured s.
I know it is a touchy subject...but I see it often mentioned in profiles.

Not a matter I have discussed as none of my Afro-American mates are involved in BDSM or kink as far as I am aware. In an ideal world I would dearly love to have one slave girl from every race and colour. Immagine what a delicious sight it would be at a munch? Still back to reality, we don't have all that many Afro-Americans living here in Australia although there are quite a number of coloured folk including Asians involved from what I hear. Personally. it would depend in the chemistry. There would be quite a few nay sayers and critics were I to have an Afro-American girl in a collar and even more if the was shiriked or other wise chained especially now that on pay tv we are about to have a re-run of "Roots". Ethically I have no issues but it could for a few folk call up immages from the dark (no pun indended) of the history of the Anglo-Saxon and European domination (including the US citizens) when real life slavery was the norm..

JustDarkness -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/5/2009 3:04:47 AM)

I do see coloured people..just as what they are..people. As you said...if there is chemistry...why would one worry about having her/him chained.
IF we keep see them as "coulered" we will never advance. People are people..no matter what colour.

But.. I admit..sometimes..as a Dutch person(with our past...) I wonder if I could handle a coloured person without feeling bad.

IronBear -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/5/2009 3:38:54 AM)

An Australian Aboriginal mate of mine, a much venerated tribal elder in Western Australia once commented on a TV interview:
"It doesn't matter if you are Black, Yellow, Brown, Green or Blue, we are ALL Australians first!" Makes a whole lot of sense to me.

How ironic that this word (the c word) has been used in a PC thread.

I am probably fairly politically correct to be honest, I have to be with the kind of work I do the correct terminology changes all the time.

I think its fine to be as unpc as you want at home but a lot of the time many pc terms come about so as not to offend others. Words become outdated. I guess its like the saying forcing your kind on to other people, live how you want to but dont make others suffer it.

OmegaG -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/5/2009 4:57:01 AM)

PC jargon is used with the intention of being as unoffensive to the largest segment of people.  Unfortunately some get so hung up on PC jargon that they don't learn about the audience they are communicating with.  The most glaring example I can think of are the terms "african-american", et al, there are individuals that I know that fit under that PC umbrella that hate the term and were I to communicate with these people I would chose a less offensive term to the individual.  I just moved from an extremely PC sensitive area and there is a Women of Color Task Force that holds a Women of Color seminar every year.  So sometimes the terms are or are not PC based on content or intent too.

As far as this site is concerned, maybe "lifestyle" can fall under one of those PC terms to describe "us" as a whole but really doesn't sit well with some individuals, so when addressing the larger group it might be OK to use that word for lack of something better, but when addressing those individuals that have vocally objected to that term, it would be far from PC to use that term.

That is how I see it.
Treat a person for the person...not the colour.

last time I said "black" on one of the posts here and it wasn't very welcome.
If we use it overhere (Netherlands) it is not a problem. It is always hard online..to see how sensitive words are in an other country.
It might be PC-jargon...but I use it to not give the wrong ideas that I might be a racist.

Ps..what is the right term?

Ps2 I do write with some coloured persons ...and I never have to use the word any way..but besides that. They don't mind using the words as much as non coloured peopel do. That is pretty weird not.

OmegaG -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/5/2009 5:47:57 AM)

that's it-- no matter how PC we get there is not "right" terminology.

My son and his father perfer to be called "black", there are others that are more proud of their ancestry that perfer "Afro-American" or other dirivitive.

However, I would bet that when you caught flack it wasn't a person of color that called you to the mat, but a white person that was over sensitive to being seen as non-sensitive to race.

yep..it was a non coloured person. But...online it is hard to judge ofcourse. Me beeing non-english....things can be misnderstood also.
That is why I use coloured now or when I know...just the name of the person.

colouredin -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/5/2009 5:51:38 AM)

The thing is with race and indeed other things the terms can offend everyone. I dont think its a case of being over sensitive.

I am an able bodied person and yet I get really rather angry when people use certain terms in regard to people who are not able bodied. (as well as putting notes on cars when idiots park next to drop curbs)

How did that Bloom County joke go?

"Grandma, please, we don't say 'colored people' any more!"

"Then what do we say, dear"

"We say 'people of color.'"

GreedyTop -> RE: Political Correctness & the Wonderful World of Kink (1/5/2009 6:06:47 AM)

a point that has been made on other threads is if the person of color is not american, why refer to them as african-american?

Would you consider to be colourless? Just think about it... not trying to nitpick here, but there are reasons why certain words have become symbols of times passed.
