Okay...I'm 50, male....(5/10 if that matters)....

I've read all the "Americans shit more vitamins than they actually need" stuff....I've heard all the Sunday morning radio crap about the latest and greatest....

But...I ain't 22 anymore...

And frankly, I just don't have a clue on the whole vitamin thing....

Any advice?

Store brand....prescription....anything?

I'm female, and also 50.  I take a women's multivitamin/mineral supplement 3 times a week (Mon, Wed. Fri).  I figure I eat a reasonably balanced diet but I just might be missing out on some things, so the vitamin will help me cover all the bases.

I also take a fish oil capsule every morning.  You can get vitamins and fish oil all in one capsule, but you don't really need to take the vitamins every single day

This topic is as bad as politics or religion.

Myself, I've been taking Centrum and / or other vitamins since I was sixteen and I look and feel a hell of a lot better than most people my age, and I get a lot of very positive comments. I say it depends a lot of your diet - I've never gotten a complete spectrum from my diet, and I've always felt like supplements were important for my health.

I read a report recently though, that said that if you get cancer it uses vitamins too, and grows much faster if you take them...

I'm 33, so I don't worry about it that much.  But I attempted to take a multivitamin daily for awhile.  But I stopped doing it.  I hate taking pills, because I forget to take them.  I also believe it's a rip-off.  If your doctor tells you to, then follow his advice.  If not, I don't see the point.  Like you, I've read plenty of articles that say we get plenty of vitamins with a well-rounded diet.

I hate pills, so I eat those milk chocolate Vivactive vitamins... it's the only way I'll actually eat them every day.

Does it help? Who knows... can't hurt.

I started taking omega 3 once a day.  I don't know if it's making any difference, but it's supposed to do all sorts of good things.  I don't worry much about vitamins because I eat a lot of vegetables and I drink soy milk which is fortified with a bunch of stuff.  I should probably be taking calcium too, but I don't

I buy the fortified orange juices.  I make soy drinks which has tons of vitamins in one serving.  I pop a pill on occasion. My arthritis is kicking up lately and I need to take 3 pills a day (glucosamine) and can't even keep up with that, even with the pain they help prevent.

Normally..if you eat healthy..you wouldn't need it.
But they can give you support when your health is not so good..or when you are on a diet. Eating to much of them....will indeed lead to shitting it out or pissing it out.
(to much vitamin C can even lead to poissoning)

Overhere there are vitamin pills (with suppliments)...for sporters...pregnant females...50+ etc etc.
I guess most drug stores have that range from Centrum.

The right supplements really can give you a boost.

There are a lot of things to consider, according to how much you want to learn about it.

My short answer:

Look at products from the brand names Enzymatic Therapy and Thorne.  They're both pharmaceutical grade, have been tested to have a high absorption rate (i.e., not so much flushing away), and put together really effective formulas.  That a formula be well-balanced is especially important, because the nutrients work together - your body needs magnesium and zinc, to break down calcium, needs one B vitamin to break down another, etc..

I find Life Time (or is it all one word, LifeTime?) brand name to be good, too, but haven't confirmed whether they've been tested for absorption or if they're pharmaceutical grade.  Their website probably says.

I'd suggest selecting a multi- supplement from Enzymatic Therapy, and getting any other mineral supplements you need from Thorne, because these are what each of these companies are the best at.  Enzymatic has formulas especially by age group, gender, and certain health issues.

You probably also want to pick up an Omega-3 fish oil supplement from one of these sources, too.  All the brain doctors recommend it, for continued brain and nervous system health.

You can have a look at the entire product line for these brand names, then when you know what you want, you can find always find a good discount on Enzymatic Therapy and Life Time.  www.iherb.com and www.vitacost.com are a couple of online suggestions, for example.

Thorne isn't usually discounted.  You can find it at most well-stocked drugstores, over-the-counter, but not usually in vitamin/health food stores.

Be healthy!

Go to your local health food store and ask for help. I'd also suggest getting  a book or two on the subject.( I use to have the Vitamin Bible)  here's the link http://www.amazon.com/Earl-Mindells-Vitamin-Bible-Century/dp/0446607029

Because of health reasons: I use to take up to 90 pills a day based on these and other books along with my daily intake of nutrients through food and it helped me greatly.

As soon as cash flow increases..I'll be on them again. :>

Despite what most people think..It would be hard to eat everything that's required for a complete healthy diet.

Remember, as with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Buy good ones like the above posters have suggested.

I don't know how to tell y'all this, but virtually all vitamins are made in China these days. If you all want to buy into marketing bullshit, feel free. I have a background in Chemistry, and I know that there is no difference between CVS vitamin C and Super-Duper New-Age Happy Life vitamin C.

Vitamins are catalysts; they do not provide energy. Some vitamins are water-soluble, and some are fat-soluble. Vitamin C is water-soluble; it is virtually impossible to take too much ASCORBIC ACID.

A balanced diet will provide all the nutrients one needs. A typical American diet of fast foods, prepared frozen/canned garbage, etc. leads to nutrient deficiency.

I know of no well-designed studies which show that organic foods are more nutrient-dense than corporate-agriculture foods. If you can find one, let me know. That's not why I eat organic produce, though.

Virtually all synthetic that is.

You can get some homegrown vitamins still. As you probably know also..there is a difference in how the body absorbs vitamins. Synthetic pill form are usually the worse for absorption.

It's been awhile since I've read up on centrum and the such but when I was up on them I thought they were synthetic.

It would be hard to eat everything that's required for a balance diet. I just don't eat that much myself. I'm not sure what percentage of people don't eat a balanced diet but I'm sure the percentage is high, so taking a supplement is a good idea

Actually minerals are more important than vitamins by an order of magnitude. If you have time to read I have some information I can email you.

I take a multi-vitamin and calcium citrate.  Sometimes I forget to take them, but I do try.

You have some great advice here already, however, here is Mine:

Very few doctors will prescribe vitamins-so you will need to look to OTC etc.

NO vitamin will work if your eating/exercise routine is counterproductive--i.e. you are a couch potato who swille bear and eats fried foods-that's like a blind, deaf salmon stuck in a creek.

NOW that does not mean you have to become a health food fanatic---simple changes can help--just remember, any pill is only as good as your body is capable of assimilating it. Example: if you have high cholesterol, when is the last time you had your teeth cleaned by a dentist? Plaque is a leading contributor to high cholesterol, is it all of it, no, does it help, yep!

My recommendation is to understand what you want to accomplish---turn back the clock--impossible. Slow current deterioration--completely possible.

Expensive is not always better--I see many here have recommended Centrum--I do as well--I take the Centrum cardio-along with Fish oil for My cholesterol--sure, much of it I will pee out, BUT the body will NOT spill what it feels it needs--and I know My needs vary day to day.

Usually  most people are low on C and B--so start with a basic multi--Centrum has a silver brand that is awesome---and remember, one pill won't make you wake up 30--nor will you wake up over night feeling better--it takes 30 days for the body to recalculate--so stick with it!

Look at products from the brand names Enzymatic Therapy and Thorne.

I don't know about the rest of their products but I absolutely swear by Ivy Leaf Syrup. Between Asthma and allergies I get drainage to my lungs and constriction. The syrup will in about a flash stop bronchial spasms. They also have tablets you can take on a regular basis is you have compromised lungs. These keep my from having chronic bronchitis. ( of course I do use Musinex to take advantage of being able to bring things up and out.

I go on supplement and vitamins jags.

The one thing I do not forget to take is Vitamin D as I have a bad deficiency in it. Twice a week I have to take 5000 units then  1000 a day.

But I try and take a multi V, calcium, and pro-biotic at the very least.

Google vitamins and prostate cancer before taking vitamins or suppliaments.

I rather think that the average Westerner gets about every thing they need in a good diet (notice the words "good diet:). If you eat green vegetables just about every day, and fruit, vitamins are probably redundant.

This is just a random article and not clinical in anyway that I can tell. If anyone can come up with a link to what is expected of us to eat everyday to get all the nutrients we need. I'd appreciate it.
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/457923/why_you_cant_get_all_needed_nutrients.html

I know , based on memory of charts I use to read, that there is not much in the way of probability that most people in the world are eating everything they need (much less the people here on this forum)

Now plenty of people that don't take supplements live out their lives without them but in my opinion the quality of life can be diminished. Most people will never know the difference because they don't try them.
