I live in a room five metres by four metres, and I would love to have a double bed, well, just a bigger bed than my single, but space is a severe problem as living in one room, well all the other functions of life have to be considered, (aside from toilet and personal cleaning facilities, that has it's own room). I have considered moving elsewhere, but what I have, it's location would be sad to leave and all for the desire for a bigger bed, not really a good enough reason, you understand. So I have looked and looked for an option and came upon good old American ingenuity, trust the Americans to come up with something like this, a wonderful idea. But given the doublespace beds would be a good option for compact living, does anyone know if anything like it is available in the UK ? Alternatively, are there any other options I can consider , any ideas ?

That was neat. My first thought was a loft bed. Usable space underneath and above. edited to add...or a pull out couch.

The salacious side of me has just thought of another worthy application for the counter balanced bed idea. What a wonderful frame that bed system has, and I am sure it has other uses, uses that perhaps might well have crossed the mind of the kinky crew. The ultimate pervertable perhaps .

That's neat! I'm sure they'd be willing to ship one to England for you from Arizona. Maybe you should consider immigrating to Canada! Plenty of "space" there! Maybe one of the Canadian ladies in here would be willing to "sponsor" you. You'd be in, "the big bed" then!

My suggestion would be a convertible sofa. Not the typical fold out sofa bed, but ones similar to these. The one I used to own (purchased in Europe) was very comfortable to sleep in. Of course, while a bit less substantial, you can always go with a futon. Edited to add: Here's a company in Canada that makes convertible sofas that more closely resemble what I am referring to.

...sleep while standing? old hotels had beds the flipped down from a wall. if you are 1 person, a full mattress might be better then a double. each better then a queen. I cant get a large one up the stairs here. Gosh- times must really be bad to live in a small space. ? I manage to fill 2000 square feet. I could do with less... but not one room. Even tho I am only in one room at a time.

Loft beds are popular with students, the bed is raised higher, like a bunk bed, above a desk that is directly below. You can purchase one or build your own, otherwise I highly recommend a futon. You can find some examples here - http://www.directbedroomfurniture.com/

What about building a loft big enough for a double bed up high but having a couch or office underneath? Or my son has a bunk bed that the top bunk is a single and the bottom bunk is a double futon bed that folds into a couch. Like this... http://www.simplybunkbeds.com/futon-bunk-beds/745+750.cfm

Uhhhh...all of you who like TALL beds....loft beds....Top of the bunk beds. Ain't you ever fallen out during "the act"? You might not be doing it right. E.

~Fast Reply~ Wow, so cool... I'm bookmarking that link. Otherwise, to conserve space, you could do what my brother and I do when he's at home... and what my best friend did for a whole year... use the bed as your entire sitting space. I'm talking (if you have a desktop) using it as your computer chair, get one of those cheap 'lap desks' for when you need to write or something. If I understand the measurements right my room at home is roughly half the size as yours. I have a 'double and a half' size bed that takes up a good half of the room, and this is what I do. You've said before that you're a crafter, though, and I'm not sure how it would affect that. Edit to add: The room's slightly less than 3 yards by slightly more than 3.5 yards. [:D] silly, I know, but it's an old old house and I don't think that it was originally a room... I have a feeling that the previous owners just built it themselves, like they did with a ton of things.
