Milgram's findings explain quite a lot. There have been other studies, too. In one, they put the student into a room and told them that they were participating in a visual acuity test, along with four other people (all confederates of the experimenter). The meat of the experiment was when two lines were shown on a screen. "Which one is longer, line A or line B?" It was quite surprising, when the obviously correct answer was B, and the student heard everyone else agree that the answer was A, how very many times the student said, "Line A." Which I suppose explains some other cultural phenomena, like "I have excellent insurance! Speaking of which, I have to call them...they suddenly denied that my medication was covered this month for no reason I can see." Et cetera....
